Letter from the President Dear Friends: Even though we have 6 different fundraisers planned for this year to raise money for the CSO and our scholarship program, there are many other things going on. Have you ever tried teaching children about musical instruments at one of our Petting Zoos? We have had two of them so far this fall. If you think you’d enjoy helping children hold and try to play a musical instrument for the first time and witness their exciting wonderment, then be sure to join us on January 23 at the Charleston Aquarium where we partner with the CSO. They play their Saltwater Sounds mini concerts in front of the large fish tank alternating with our Petting Zoos. Let Petting Zoo Chair Sue Ingram know if you’re interested. Another of our very rewarding services is our Feeding of the CSO Musicians. In between some of their rehearsals when they have little time to go to a restaurant and when they are not allowed to bring their own lunches into the Gaillard Hall, we bring them lunch. They couldn’t be more grateful, and it’s fun to get to know them a bit better also. Our first one of these lunches was on November 19 at the lovely Spoleto Headquarters. Our next ones will be on January 7 and February 4 and will be at the Charleston Library on Calhoun Street. Let me know if you want to help. The first Coffee with the Maestro was held on November 6 with Ken Lam talking to us about the pieces to be played in Masterworks I, and oboist Kerri Kistler charming us with her description of how she makes all of her oboe reeds, a very time consuming necessity, and playing both her oboe and English horn. Our next Coffee will be held on January 8 at 10:00 for refreshments and 10:15 for our program with Ken Lam and another CSO musician (Note new times). Our first ever evening Wine and Such was held on November 19 at the Gaillard Green Room. There we heard from Yuriy Bekker and Charlie Messersmith about themselves and the music for Masterworks II and Ken Lam stopped by to say hello also. The purpose of this evening gathering was to try to recruit new members for the League, especially ones who are unable to attend morning coffees. different civic
organizations were
invited as well as our
own members. So many
from the other groups
accepted our invitation
that we had to limit
attendance. It was a
delightful event and next
time will not be as limited. The next one is planned
for February 4 from 5:00 to 6:30, location to be
announced later.
Our Holiday Tea was held on Wednesday, December
9 at the Gadsden House on East Bay Street.
Congratulations to chairs Peggy Cross and Faye
Griffin for planning this lovely event. Many
members brought guests, and Yuriy Bekker played
carols for a sing-along, to our delight.
Our first two fundraisers, the Grand Celebration on
September 18, and the Symphony Tour of Homes on
November 8 were great successes and delightful
experiences! We thank both committees, led so ably
by Lorraine Perry and Jane Miller, and Sharon
Bartshe and Bobbye Wilson. Over 450 tickets were
sold to the House Tour and the weather was much
better than predicted. Both volunteers and our guests
enjoyed it immensely, and the CSO concert topped it
off beautifully! Even the fairly quick lunch and party
for volunteers were much appreciated treats. A huge
thank you to all! Ongoing fundraisers, Revels and
the Lexus Car Sponsorship will continue throughout
the year. Check the website or other articles here for
more information. We look forward to the Designer
Showhouse once again in the spring, chaired by Sue
Ingram, and our Swing for the Symphony Golf
Tournament on May 16 at the Kiawah Club River
Course, co-chaired by Kitty Reid and Julie
Fenimore. If you’d like to help with these projects
don’t hesitate to contact us.
I hope your Thanksgiving celebration was joyful and
that you have a very wonderful December holiday
season! Join the CSO for the Messiah, and for
Holiday Pops, and for their first ever New Year’s
Eve concert, dinner, and dance at the Gaillard!
Check their website for details.
Happy Holidays to All!

Advocate for the Arts: League members volunteer for the Charleston Marathon Join your fellow CSOL
® members as we advocate
for the arts in the Charleston area by volunteering
to help with the Charleston Marathon. There are
many different areas in which to volunteer such as
handing out packets, tee shirts, bib numbers, etc.
Most volunteering is located at Burke High
School. Many of us will be volunteering on
Friday, January 15 but if that date doesn’t work
for you there are other days to work. You can
select the date and times you are available to
work. Lunch is provided if you are volunteering
through that time.
Our goal is to have a minimum of 25 League
members volunteering so we will receive a
donation for our scholarship fund. Monies raised
through the Marathon go to the Charleston School
District arts education programs.

Fun Time at the Instrument Petting Zoo On November 14 seven energetic League members along with the CSO string quartet arrived at the Charleston aquarium ready to share the sounds of music with families visiting the aquarium. The IPZ was offered in an adjoining room before and after the string quartet performed in front of the big tank, with the fish and turtles seeming to move to the beat of the music. Both children and adults enjoyed trying out the instruments in our IPZ with squeals of delight as they made sounds---sometimes musical and sometimes not so musical---but sounds none the less. We heard from one mother about her daughter who shortly after coming to a past IPZ asked to take violin lessons. Another young girl, after trying the cello, was taken to Norbert Lewandowski who played for her while she stood watching with rapt attention. We will be sharing the IPZ at the aquarium two more times this year---January 23 and April 16. If you would like to be a part of this fun activity contact Sue Ingram, (843) 532-4562 or [email protected]. All that is needed is a desire to share the fun of music with those discovering the sounds of the instruments.

Reveling in the Low Country We are now halfway through the Revels season. If you signed up for fall Revels it is now time to purchase your spring reservations. If you have misplaced your Revels brochure go on line to www.CSOLinc.org and check out our Spring events.
Coming up in January we have California Dreaming wine tasting hosted by Jane Miller and Jean Carlton. It promises to feature great wines and wonderful food. In February we are heading to Dewees Island for a Valentine Brunch. Dewees is ecologically sensitive and dedicated to environmental protection. For our enjoyment the CSO Brass quartet will perform. April brings a trip to discover McLeod Plantation. It is a Gullah/Geechee heritage sight and we’ll have a tour focusing on this tradition accompanied by music from this same heritage performed by a CSO musician.
The Revels Committee wishes to thank all those who have sponsored recent events: The staff at the Gaillard Center for their wonderful tour, the two Barbaras at St. Johannes Lutheran for showing us the re-decorated parsonage and letting us use the garden for a great reception, the “Where in the World” brunch hosts, Bob and Carol Wood, Ellen and Tommy Davis, and Gail Corvette for challenging our knowledge of where music was composed as well as coordinating the brunch with the featured countries, and finally the hosts as well as home owners of the gardens in which we feasted both before and after the first masterworks concert, thankyou Lorraine Perry, Ford Reese, Bob and Ornella Gebhardt and Kathy Pease.
