Potentate’sMessage
Nobles and ladies, the Potentate’s “FireBall” was a great
success. First Lady Gail and I were speechless when we walked into
the Sahib Auditorium. Our Lady Sharon Pegoraro and her magical team
had transformed our vision into memories that will last a lifetime.
The team of nobles and ladies worked diligently to ensure we had a
stress-free experience for our almost 300 guests for this treasured
occasion. A special thanks to Past Potentate Dale LaBell for
emceeing, Lady Marylou Ellis for organizing tickets and tables, the
World Famous Oriental Band performance and everyone who helped and
attended the Ball. What a special day! “Thank you all.”
Hospital Days were held and we had help with the collections for
our Transportation Fund so we can get the kids to the hospitals.
Thanks to the team leaders and their committees for working so
hard.
The East/West Shrine Game trip to Tropicana Field was a great
success. For those who attended we had a great time and a great bus
ride up and back. Thank you cooks, set-up crew, servers and
helpers. A big thanks to the FOP for the use of their facility.
West won!
Rusty Nail Degree was held at Sahib and was very well attended.
The Past Masters did a great job under the direction of High Priest
& Prophet Gene Marinelli. Thanks to R.W. Ronald E. Baber,
District Deputy Grand Master of Florida, for being here. If you
missed this one, I am sure there will be another next year. So, be
sure to check the 2018 calendar. Great job Director of Ritual Noble
Barry Hart 33° and his team.
Have you gotten your new member for Sahib? Our Membership
Chairman Gene Marinelli, High Priest and Prophet, and Ill. Sir
Connie Jacobi PP are waiting for you to bring your candidate’s
application to them. If we all work on this program, we can bring
our membership back. Team work will make it happen.
Check your calendar for March and April we have a lot going on
at Sahib, so get involved! Remember to support your Shrine and keep
a child in your heart!
Fraternally Yours,
William “Bill” Balkwill Sahib Potentate 2017

The activity at Sahib continues at a break neck speed with many
nobles getting involved. The new awnings are finally completed and
in place giving the facility a face lift. There are many projects
continuing as there is always work to be done to keep the facility
in shape. There are nobles volunteering, but it seems workers are
always needed as things seem to happen, as one project is
completed, another must be addressed.
The Imperial Potentate and his Imperial Lady will visit Sahib on
the 9th of this month, so nobles, if you are available, please
attend the luncheon, you will be able to purchase luncheon tickets
at the door as always. Contact your fellow club or unit members and
let’s have a great welcoming
turnout of nobility. Our ladies will be greeting the Imperial
Lady in a special luncheon in the Sahara Room, their ticket
reservation must be made by March 2nd.
The Divan continues its work on meeting responsibilities and
obligations at Sahib. We need your help nobles. Each of us can help
by planning to attend a social activity or have a dinner outing at
the Sahara Restaurant at least once a month. There is a new chef to
help Chef Kevin in the kitchen and they are turning out some
delicious items for your enjoyment.

Don’t sit down yet. Now that February is behind us (where did

at full speed. Our Imperial Potentate and his Imperial Lady will be
here on March 9th. Of course, we have our usual Pancake Breakfast,
Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance, Men’s Luncheon and Hillbilly
Dinner. Just to add a few more to your schedule, we have Bar Bingo
every Monday evening and regular Bingo all day Tuesday. March 15 is
Tampa Bay Downs Sahib Race Day. March 17 is the St. Patty’s Day
Dinner. Every Wednesday we draw our Queen of Hearts. March 17 -
26 is the Sarasota County Fair, and last, but not least, the 26th
is the Spring Fling Party.
Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead on March 12. It’s a busy
month, so catch your breath when you can. These events are for all
of us, so come out and support your Shrine. We look forward to
seeing you. Until next month remember, be kind to one another.

please send your friends and neighbors.
Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour on March 12th or
you will be late. We have a new chef, Jason. Along with Kevin, they
are making good food. St. Patty’s Day Dinner is on the 17th and

Thanks to all 54 members and ladies who attended our January 6th
meeting. That’s four more than last month. Our membership grew by
one as James Gardener was our first new member for 2017. We have
word that additional men are planning on joining. We heard from our
Treasurer Ron LeVene that through the efforts of LeRoy Hocking
contact has been made with the Pirates Baseball organization
regarding a possible restart of a working contract with the
Pirates. More on this to come as Ron LeVene, Jim Smith and Connie
Jacobi have formed an exploratory committee to flush out the
details of a working relationship with the Pirates. Bob Rodd
presented an appeal for volunteers to help staff the hospital days
February 2-5 at the Publix on US 301.
Our guest speakers at the January meeting were from the Sarasota
Military Academy (SMA) and included Colonel Benjamin Knisely,
U.S.
Army-Retired, Administrator Victoria Finley and two cadets. They
informed us of the academic and military programs that develop
character and national pride in the nearly 1,600 cadets in grades
6-12. The two cadets each spoke extemporaneously on their
experience that brought them to SMA and what they received from the
educational environment that exists there. It was a pleasure to
hear from such accomplished young people. Hats off to SMA.

at the Peridia Golf & Country Club, Bradenton, Florida. The

It is March. We return to Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, March
12th. Then spring is only three weeks away on March 19. For Motor
Corps Shrine Club members, this means more time to ride in warmer
temperatures and more sunlight. Perfect! If you had a motorcycle,
you could join us.
Since the new year began, the Motor Corps has kept a busy
schedule. The next few months also, are going to keep us busy as
well. However, before we talk about more recent events, there is
some belated news to share with our readers. So, we go back to
mid-January to begin.
Some of our members participated in this year’s “Thunder by the
Bay” motorcycle rally in Sarasota the weekend of January 5-8. Only
problem was that this year’s rally was not held by the bay in
downtown Sarasota, but rather in Lakewood Ranch. Wonder where it
will be next year?
At our regular meeting in January, we drew the winning ticket
for our sportsman’s raffle. The winner was DDGM Al Dahlberg (Big
Al), a member of the Motor Corps. Congratulations to
Al and thanks to all those that purchased tickets. In late
January, five members of the Motor
Corps pressure cleaned the motorcycle concrete parking pad in
front of the building. We also did a little yard work and raked the
area on two sides of the pad. Thanks to Temp Hamilton (Snoozy),
Steve Helin (Varmint), George Hernandez (Silver Fox), Don Basham
(The Don) and Giles Light (G-man).
Several of our members were in Cocoa Beach the weekend of
February 2nd through the 4th for the Florida Association of Shrine
Motor Corps (FASMC) Mid-Winter Gathering. Representatives from
Shrine Motor Corps Units in Florida attended the event. Among our
Sahib Shriners were John Hubbard (Hot Rod), who is currently
serving as president of the organization and Hampton Crimi (Monk)
who is secretary. Others in attendance were Ed Jordan (Photoshop),
who is executive secretary; Barry Hart (Policyman); Dave Mashia
(OD); Darren Bracken (Schmoozer); Bob Hammer (Hammertime); and
Scott Steelman (Gray Fox).

Since your scribe’s attendance record at our Tuesday Breakfasts
has been somewhat perfunctory due to what facetiously may be called
“golden years problems” there has not been much forthcoming from
North Port Shrine Club. Hopefully, things will change for the
better with President Wheatcroft volunteering to be our roving
reporter. That being said, I request all information, pictures, et
al. be in writing, in detail, pictures sent as attachments via
email. Phone calls are a problem especially from a cell phone to
our land-line phone. Voice fidelity is quite poor and our old ears
have problems understanding. I thank you in advance. This does not
mean there will be a NPSC article in every “Reporter” edition.
We’ll try our best.
Toward the end of January our President “Wheatie” was presented
with a check for $500 for the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa
from the local New York Giants fan club. These fans saw the TV
announcements and were prompted to select NPSC as the messenger.
Many thanks from us and the hospital. Advertising does pay.
There have been picnics, mixers and more to come in February.
Maybe information on these events will be noted in the next
“Reporter?” Since your scribe no longer has an automobile and
depends on his Lady Kitty for transportation and
the fact that we do not travel at night or stray far from the
nest means depending on others for information. C’est la vie!
It seems fitting to recognize the Olde World Restaurant on its
30th birthday as they provide the setting for our Tuesday
Breakfasts. Congratulations to owners Christine Zagrobelny and
Teresa Skoczylas.
There is still a considerable amount of QN and Bits and Pieces
cluttering up my desk so those items are still a go. So here
goes.
(Bits and Pieces) He missed! A Florida man almost lost his
finger when he tried to shoot off his wedding ring. After drinking
and arguing with his wife, he pulled out a gun and blasted at his
hand. He told police he was trying to get rid of the ring. The shot
badly mangled his finger but the ring didn’t come off.
Cue---laughter.
(Quotable Notable) Who said? “Too bad that all the people who
know how to run the country are busy driving taxicabs and cutting
hair.” The usual comped breakfast for two for the correct
answer.
QN for December 2016: J. K. Rawling who said, “Those who choose
not to empathize enable real monsters. For without ever committing
an act of outright evil ourselves, we collude with it, through our
own apathy.”

On Saturday, January 28th at 8:15 p.m., a small force of the
Venice Shrine Club Keystone Kops, led by Chief Bill Moore,
conducted a surprise raid on the Sahib Potentate’s Ball of the
newly installed Ill. Sir Bill Balkwill being held at Sahib
Shriners.
The 300 in attendance witnessed the arrest of Illustrious
Potentate Balkwill. He was taken into custody and was held for the
infamous Keystone Kops Kangaroo Court. Charges by the Keystone
Kops, against Ill. Sir Balkwill were impersonating a Shriner and
other crimes against Shrinedom, to be determined later.
Ill. Sir’s bail was set at $500. Guests at the Potentate’s Ball
were asked by First Lady Gail to take pity on the Potentate. Nobles
and guests managed to raise sufficient funds to cover his bail and
obtain his release. Those in attendance praised the Keystone Kops
for their professional action and their faithfulness to duty.
The raiding party from the Venice Shrine Club Keystone Kops
consisted of the following nobles: Kops Chief Bill Moore, Assistant
Chief Russ Mattson, Quartermaster Evan Lebson, Flatfoot Don Koleson
and Flatfoot Garner Kimbrell. Be on the alert, the Kops are alive
and well!

SHRINE UNIT NEWS
By the time you read this, the U.S. President and our own
“FireBall Express” Potentate William “Bill” Balkwill will have
served their flock for two months. Changes have been made and I am
sure there are more to come. The Clowns wish both of them success
and their success will help the Clowns and our Shrine be
successful. Fire!
Two Clowns, Harold “Scrappy” Bell and Rick “Sliver” Taylor
attended the East/West football players’ reception at the Shriners
Hospitals for Children-Tampa on January 15 and had a great time
entertaining the patients and giving handshakes to the many
players. Oh yes, we had to look up at them in more than one way.
Big is not the correct word for their size, it should be more like
really big. Despite the size, it was once again a beautiful picture
to see these men play and work with the patients in games of catch
or pushing in a swing. Oh yes, these guys were so happy to be in
pictures with whomever. All Shriners should make sure they are part
of this event and witness their patients in action. Of course, you
can see pictures of Scrappy and Sliver in action at the hospital in
my article.
On Saturday, January 21st, Scrappy and Sliver traveled to
Tropicana Field to be part of the East/West Football Game
festivities on the field and in the stands. Before going inside,
there was a “parking lot feast.” The Shrine had a space cordoned
off where food and drinks were served in two lines for about two
hours. Sure, we
had some barbecue chicken and ribs. Then, it was pre-game
introductions on the field followed by lots of fun for us
entertaining the many children in the stands. It was a fun, but a
long day.
The Clowns’ Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance is now history and
we hope that everybody had a great time celebrating with your
Valentine or doing your thing for Mardi Gras. The Clowns say a big
thank you to our ladies for their beautiful decorations and their
time for putting them up. We will see you next year for even more
fun.
Well, we will see you soon in Arcadia and until then, remember
it is our Shrine children for whom we are working.

Oriental BandJim Austin, [email protected]
At the end of January, it was our band’s pleasure to welcome and
play a couple of songs for our 2017 Potentate Bill Balkwill and his
First Lady Gail. The members of our group are confident that he
will be helpful and positive in this new position, and good for our
organization during his year. He sure had a great gathering in the
Main Hall for his Ball and we were happy to welcome him aboard
along with the rest of the membership.
Happy to tell you that our band is continuing to grow and now
have welcomed one more gentleman to our little group in January. As
always, we equip newcomers with a variety of instruments and
someone is assigned to help the newcomers with their choices. Quite
often a new person will
maybe change their first choice and decide to try some other
instrument. It’s done often for one reason or another. Almost every
member of this band can play more than one, and quite a few can
play all of them. This helps our fearless leader, Floyd LaDue,
adjust the band as a whole, to be the best we can be (borrowing a
line from the Army).
Being short of material this month, I will leave you with this
note in case you have been paying attention, we practice most every
Wednesday at 1900. This is after they do the big drawing in the
lounge for the Queen of Hearts. Everyone is welcome, food is top
notch, and you will have the opportunity to hear us rehearse. Wow,
what a night you will have...until we meet again.

Scottish Riteby Casey A. Fletcher, KCCH,
[email protected]
At the core of the second section of the Master Mason’s Degree,
lies a legend in which three unworthy Fellow Crafts plot against a
worthy Mason. The appearance of these ruffians is one of the more
memorable twists of our ceremonies.
According to the Blue Lodge tradition, a crime is committed, the
culprits captured and justice administered. In the Third Degree of
Scottish Rite Masonry (which is neither conferred nor exemplified
in this Grand Lodge jurisdiction), the legend is different in an
important respect. The ruffians escape and the degree’s narrative
moves on.
It is not until the Ninth and Tenth Degrees that the Scottish
Rite deals with the ruffians. This postponement is helpful. We are
further along in our Masonic journey and have had a chance to
reflect upon the story told thus far. The ruffians are not
ancillary characters in the Scottish Rite, they symbolize numerous
ideas and offer lessons to consider. As with all Masonic symbols,
the ruffians can represent a number of things. Here are a few.
In a political or societal sense, the ruffians can be given the
names of King-craft, Priest-craft and Mob-craft. King-craft
suggests political tyranny and despotism, those forms and practices
of governance that threaten liberty and freedom. Priest-craft
refers to religious intolerance and threats to our freedom of
conscience. Mob-craft threatens the rule of law; the peace and
safety of our society.
To Masons who trace our symbolism back to ancient solar
mysteries, the three ruffians represent the three winter months
which plot to murder the beauty and glory of summer, destroying the
life-giving heat of the Sun. The ruffians might remind us of the
unconquerable cycles of life.
At an individual level, the ruffians represent personal vices:
ignorance, ambition and fanaticism. Such symbols are central themes
of the Ninth and Tenth Degrees.
Socrates wrote of ignorance. No man, he said, seeing good and
evil side by side will choose evil unless he is too blind to see
its results. Our own ignorance can deceive us as surely as any
ruffian. Socrates’ remedy for such a vice was education.
So, one ruffian, by way of a negative example, encourages our
continual search for Light.
Plato, in his works, describes the dangers of ambition. He
likens the life of a man to that of driving a team of two horses,
one tame, called Self-Control, and one wild, named Ambition. So
long as the wild horse of Ambition is held firmly, all goes well.
But often enough, the wild horse gets loose and there is a runaway
and a wreck. Ambition can disrupt our lives as surely as a
ruffian.
Aristotle admonishes fanaticism. He asserts we cannot grasp any
Truth until we admit a certain moral weakness in our hearts. He
would have us overcome this weakness with humility and the aid of
Divine help. It is easy to recognize fanaticism in the world around
us and still easier to ascribe it to others. But fanaticism and
intolerance in our conduct, if not checked, can harm us as surely
as a setting maul.
There are still other allegories that might be reflected upon.
We may consider the wounds the ruffians inflicted -- at the throat,
heart, and head.
The wound at the throat silences freedom of speech. The wound at
the heart attacks the conscience and the head wound assaults the
intellect and reason.
In the Scottish Rite, the ruffians are not ancillary characters.
They serve instructive purposes and contain rich symbolism. These
three characters may give us as much to reflect upon as does the
character and example of our Grand Master.
The Ninth and Tenth Degrees of the Scottish Rite will be
conferred at our Spring Reunion on April 22 and April 29. Petitions
are available at http://tampascottishrite.org.
The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on
the 2nd Monday of each month. Dinner is served at 5:45 p.m. and the
regular meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. At our March 13th meeting,
Worshipful Kenneth Carolan, 32nd Degree, will present an education
program.
Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow,
Florida. He avoids setting mauls.

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!
March 2017 SAHIB REPORTER Page 33
For several years, Sahib Shriners had what was referred to as an
“Angel Fund’ to assist nobles who were unable to pay their dues
because of health, financial or age related issues. The “Angel
Fund” remitted the necessary funds to keep them as current members,
and to avoid suspension due to non-payment of Shrine dues.
This fund has been fully exhausted and there is no place in our
budget to replenish the fund. This is where you can lend a helping
hand to a fellow Shrine Mason, if he is in good standing within his
Blue Lodge.
For your contribution of $35, you can keep one delinquent member
from being removed from our membership rolls for another year
pending his status as a Master Mason. You can personally select a
member from the current delinquent list, or we will do it for
you.
Please remember these nobles in need of a helping hand. Stop by
the office and be responsible for keeping a fellow Shriner on the
active list.

The banquet at Sahib Shriners for Nyla Temple No. 152 was
honored to have Her Majesty Supreme Queen Cathy Carol Rose along
with Illustrious Sir Bill Balkwill and First Lady Gail with us. It
was an honor indeed to have all three.
Nyla Temple is growing and we welcome you to join us for fun,
fellowship and working for the Shriners Hospitals for Children -
Tampa which is our main goal. I was just informed that Daughters of
the Nile has given 60 million dollars to support the hospitals. We
meet the first Thursday of each month (except June, July and
August). Session begins at 11:00 a.m. with coffee and rolls
beforehand. Come join us. Just ask for a petition.
As this is my final “Reporter” article, it’s both a sad but
happy moment. We had a great year. I am so thankful for all of you
that helped and supported the Ladies of the Oriental Shrine. I have
been very blessed to have been able to travel up the line. When I
was told to enjoy each day, it didn’t really make sense. Over these
last eight years, I have learned a lot, met a lot of new lady
Shriners and became closer to the ones I already knew. Time went
very fast and especially this last year.
My special project with the luggage has been great and I will
continue, as there are several organizations that can use luggage.
To my executive board, my what a wonderful group! You have all
worked very hard and the results sure showed.
This last year with the parades, sewing groups, circus, Grand’s
visit, our Christmas in July, our Christmas Party, the Fashion
Show, the toy drive, and our visits to the Shriners Hospitals for
Children – Tampa, along with the events that
our units hosted, we indeed stayed very busy.Let’s not forget
our Unit Meet and our Grand
Council. In November of 2017, our Court will be hosting the Unit
Meet. Watch for more information as the months roll on.
We welcomed in new ladies and lost several of our dear sisters
and friends. They will be greatly missed. You ladies out there, if
you want to work for our hospital children, we would love a chance
to speak to you regarding joining the Ladies of the Oriental Shrine
of North America.
Here is a great big wish to our incoming executive board - good
luck and this is truly a great Court! What a great and talented
bunch of ladies to work with. I thank each one of you, I will never
forget my year as High Priestess. You ladies never let me down,
when our membership team needed volunteers to fill in, you were
there, I never had to ask you to volunteer. Let’s not forget our
Culinary Group with Lady Jennie Crawford, PGHP, leading the group.
A good job well done. See you at the Shrine.

A big thank you to Palmetto pickers, Fred Rollins and David
Schade, who ride their bikes to scour the town to pick up cans and
have many people saving cans for them, including a few business
places. Tab snapper helpers include Larry and Carol Robinett and
Audrey Fedeles, with neighbors dropping in to help (Darlene Eggler,
Mary Ann Miller and Judy Blackwood). They give the tabs to Noble Ed
Cramer to turn in to the Shrine. They have been averaging about
five pounds of tabs a week in a full gallon-sized zip lock bag.
Sahib Motor Corps members were the cooks for Thursday and Friday
nights.
Hopefully, most of you reading this article, attended the Motor
Corps Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, February 19. Our members had a
great time preparing the food and we hope you had a great time
eating it. We’ll have all the details to report next month. If you
missed the February dinner, the Motor Corps will be back in
November with another Spaghetti Dinner.
That pretty much brings you up-to-date on recent Motor Corps
happenings, but we have other events on the horizon. The first of
these will occur on Thursday, March 9 when we will be escorting
Imperial Potentate Chris L. Smith and his First Lady Ethel to Sahib
Shriners for the Thursday luncheon. We anticipate a nice turnout of
bikes for this event.
The 9th annual Sam Swope Memorial Charity Ride, “We Ride So Kids
Can Walk” is scheduled for the second weekend in March. This year’s
ride will begin in Daytona Beach and end in Sanford. Several of our
members will be headed over to Orlando to participate in the
weekend events and the ride on Sunday, March 12. Sam Swope had been
a great supporter of Masonic organizations and charities, including
Shriners Hospitals for Children. Last year, more than 1,000
motorcyclists took to the road for a scenic 52-mile route from
Bahia Shriners to the Seminole Harley-Davidson dealership in
Sanford.
The annual Arcadia Rodeo Parade is scheduled for Saturday, March
11. We expect to participate. Kickstands up at Sahib Shriners at
9:00 a.m. and parade scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
We have five members and their ladies with birthdays in March.
They are Bob Hammer (Hammertime) on the 1st, Lady Amanda Cyphers on
the 2nd, Lady Kelly deStefano on the 15th, Barry Hart (Policyman)
on the 28th and Lady Jean Ragsdale on the 29th. No anniversaries
this month.

the Sahara Restaurant, please call for reservations at 366-4449
extension 311 at least 24 hours in advance if possible, if not,
please call early the day in which you plan to be in the Sahara.
This will give the kitchen staff the knowledge of what and how much
to prepare on that date. They attempt to have fresh meals prepared
for your enjoyment and when reservations are not made, the kitchen
is only guessing on how much or for how many to prepare for. Not
having reservations is and continues to be a problem with shortages
of food items which puts the manager and his staff in a precarious
position of explaining the situation.
Please, remember Wednesday and Friday are the only nights that
our Sahara Restaurant is open for dinners in which it can produce
income. Thursday is the Hillbilly Dinner which is a fundraiser for
the Hillbilly Shrine Club and not for the Sahib’s Sahara Restaurant
and Lounge. Don’t forget that lunch is served in the restaurant on
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, so if you are out and about
come by for lunch, there are always great specials made for your
pleasure and don’t forget the lounge’s daily happy hour.
The year continues and the “FireBall Express” continues rolling.
Get on board as fun is happening for all. Don’t forget the child
within and I’ll see you around Sahib.

Shriners Hospitals for ChildrenCollection Boxes
What are they?A plastic cube with a slot in the top.
What are the boxes for?To help collect donations, money for our
Shriners Hospitals for Children to help relieve the pressure from
the Hospital Days Fund Drive.
Where are the boxes to be?In any store or business, preferably
near a cash register. Within eyesight of customers making it easy
for them to put their change in the box.
When are the boxes to be used? All year round, so our friends can
donate small amounts of cash at any time.
As most of you know, many businesses have some kind of
collection boxes on their counters, so why not one of ours?
Call the Sahib Office at 366-4449if you can arrange a
placement.
Pull Tabs for Shriners HospitalsThe Ladies of Sar-I Court
started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the
“Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of January 31, 2017, they have
collected 113,835 lbs., for a total of $61,166.16 for the Shriners
Hospital for Children in Tampa.

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun!Put out a milk jug
at every picnic or party!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS
1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would
require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and
recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster
behind Sahib.
2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a
gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds
worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs
are
delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit
loca-tion) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted
from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at
the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children.
