SERIES AGAINST MIAMILittle Rock and Miami will square up for just the second time in both programs’ histories. The Trojans and Hurricanes first met in 2014 and saw Little Rock win the match in four sets. The Trojans enter Friday’s match with an all-time record of 2-5 against ACC opponents.

SERIES AGAINST JACKSON STATELittle Rock and Jackson State have met four times overall — last in 2009. The Trojans lead the series at 4-0 and have won every set — all by at least eight points. Little Rock is a perfect 27-0 against SWAC schools.

SERIES AGAINST SOUTHERN MISS It has been 14 years since Little Rock and Southern Miss last played in 2003 in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles won the last bout in four sets to even the series at two matches apiece. The Trojans are 80-72 all-time against schools in Conference USA.

LEADING THE CHARGELone senior Marina Avram will lead the Trojans into battle with three years of experience under her belt. Last season, Avram was third on the squad with 246 kills (2.20 per set) and 231 digs. She tied for the most service aces on the team with 34 — 6th overall in the Sun Belt Conference. She’s also the last remaining player from Little Rock’s historic 2014 season — a year that saw the team finish 30-5 overall with a 20-0 Sun Belt record, a regular season and conference tournament title and a win over 16th-seeded Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

NEW FACESThe Trojans bring a plethora of new faces this season as seven of the 13 players are newcomers. The incoming class includes two junior college transfers and five freshman from five different coun-tries. JUCO transfer Maritza Mesa was an NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention in 2016 at Seward County Community College. She also earned First Team All-Region VI honors, First Team All-Jayhawk honors, Jayhawk Player of the Week honors and Jayhawk defensive Player of the Week honors. She tallied 3.42 kills per set, a .296 hitting percentage, 362 digs, 76 total blocks and 33 aces last season.

A STREAK TO CHANGEWhen it comes to season openers, Little Rock would like to go in a different direction as the club hasn’t won one since 2008.

COMPTON BEGINS 30TH SEASONHead coach Van Compton is in her 30th season at the helm of the Little Rock volleyball program. Compton resurrected the program in 1988 after the team was disbanded following the 1986 season. She came to Little Rock in 1986 to coach women’s basketball before taking over volleyball’s reigns. Since the program’s transition to Division I in 1991, Compton has led the Trojans to 24 of 26 Sun Belt Conference Tournaments, five NCAA Tournaments, five conference tournament championships and four regular-season championships. She became the Sun Belt’s all-time winningest coach in 2014 after defeating her alma mater Arkansas State in the final regular-season match to give the Trojans a perfect 20-0 conference record.

STAYING ON CENTRAL TIMEAll 28 of Little Rock’s regular-season games will take place in the Central Time Zone. The last time Little Rock played all of its game in the Central Time Zone was in 1995.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVORLittle Rock will sport players from six different coun-tries and four different states in 2017. It will be the Trojans’ most international roster since 2009 when they also had players from six different countries.

SCOUTING REPORTSCOUTING MIAMIThe Hurricanes finished the 2016 season with a 15-17 record, but they bring back all but two members of that roster. Olga Strantzali will make up the bulk of Miami’s offense as the senior put down 586 kills last season with a .233 hitting percentage. She also served up the most aces on the team with 48 and had the second-most digs with 309. She’ll have returning setter Hannah Sorenson to work with as the sophomore tallied 10.88 assists per set last season.Defensively, the Hurricanes bring back top blocker Lucia Pampana, who racked up 102 total blocks last season. Libero Sylvia Hernandez also returns after averaging 3.37 digs per set last year.

SCOUTING JACKSON STATEThe Tigers bring back only five players from 2016’s roster after going 8-24. Returners Madison Wolf and Dayjah Stewart averaged 1.68 and 1.62 kills per set for Jackson State last season. Jackson State libero returns after tallying 3.30 digs per set last season.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN MISSThe Golden Eagles went 23-8 last season, and bring back all but three members from last year’s roster.Outside hitter Kylie Grandy racked up the second-most kills on the team last season with 320 (2.91 per set). Re-turning setter Sarah Bell tallied 11.47 assists per set last season — second-most in Conference USA.Defensively, libero Natalie Druhan dug up 4.05 digs per set last season. Middle blocker Catherine Repsher was a force at the net last season with 133 total blocks (1.20 per set) — third-most in Conference USA.

2017 MATCH LEADERS

PRESEASON POLLLittle Rock was picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt Conference West Division for the second year in a row with 34 points. Arkansas State was picked to win the division with 71 points and 11 first-place votes. Texas State was second with 57 points and one first-place vote, and UT Arlington came in third with 50 points. Louisiana and ULM were each picked below the Trojans with 28 and 12 points, respectively.

2016 SUMMARYThe 2016 season didn’t go the Trojans’ way, but that doesn’t mean accomplishments weren’t had. The team finished 12-18 overall, but the squad also finished with a .500 record or better in conference play for the fifth consecutive season at 8-8.

On top of that, middle blocker Carolee Dillard end-

ed her four-year career by breaking the program’s all-time block record with 587 — enough to break the Sun Belt’s rally-scoring record as well.

Edina Selimovic took All-Sun Belt First Team honors for the third consecutive season — joining former Trojans Edina Begic and Tonja Radovic as the program’s only players with at least three First Team selections. Dillard took All-Sun Belt Second Team honors for the second consecuitve season.

The Trojans were a force to reckon with at the net as the team ranked fifth in the country for blocks per set at 3.00 and ninth in total blocks at 339.5.

NEXT ROTATIONThe Trojans will be much closer to home next week as they participate in the UCA Invitational against UCA, UT Martin and Memphis in Conway. Little

Rock and Central Arkansas will get the invitational underway on Thursday night.

Van Compton will begin her 30th season as the head coach of the Little Rock Volleyball program in 2017 after recording a 499-371 (.574) record at Little Rock and a 233-128 (.645) record in the Sun Belt. She has led the Trojans to four regular season Sun Belt Conference championships, five tournament championships and five appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Little Rock has reached the conference tournament 24 out of 26 seasons since joining the Sun Belt in 1991.

In 2014, Compton fielded the best team in program history. The Trojans finished the Sun Belt Conference undefeated at 20-0 and finished with an overall record of 30-5. Towards the end of the season, Little Rock had the longest winning streak in the nation with 25 consecutive victories. The Trojans finished the regular season with 20 conference wins, the most in Division I. Compton became the Sun Belt Conference’s all-time winningest coach when she earned her 216th conference win in straight sets against Arkansas State. Compton earned her fifth Sun Belt Conference Tournament Title after sweeping South Alabama, UT Arlington and Texas State. Compton led the Trojans past the No. 16-seeded Kansas Jayhwaks in five sets to earn the program’s first NCAA Tournament win. In the final AVCA Coaches Poll, Little Rock cracked the Top 25 for the first time in program his-tory, being ranked No. 24. Compton was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year for the second time before earning her first AVCA Southwest Region Coach of the Year award.

Since joining the conference in 1991, the Trojans are the only team to win three consecutive Sun Belt Conference tournaments.

Compton joined the Little Rock athletic program in 1986 as the women’s basketball coach before taking over the volleyball reins by resurecting the program in 1988.
