Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve spans 2,900 acres of beautiful mixed conifer forests, offering one-of-a-kind hikes and breathtaking views of both the coast and the desert on a clear day. The Five Oaks Trail winds around the mountainside through a series of switchbacks. The hike is a peaceful retreat from the main road, which is open for multi-use activities. Due to the trail altitude (4,100 feet at parking and 5,353 feet at the summit), this hike is considered moderately strenuous. Please note that no fires or overnight camping is allowed. To prevent damage to the trails after inclement weather (1/2-inch of rain or any snow), the preserve will be closed until the trails dry out. Please park on Farmer Road. Bring plenty of water and be prepared for sudden weather changes. The mid-summit gate and the summit are open seven days a week. The summit is subject to weather- related closures. Dogs are permitted as long as they are leashed.
