multi-pronged cultural spread; thebenefits of this endeavour cannotbe discounted.

Where else can one find arange of traditional performingarts classes such as Hindustaniand Carnatic vocal, sugamasangeetha, classical dance, mridangam, tabla, flute, veena, and even keyboard anddrawing and painting classes, under one roof, with areasonable fee structure?

If one is to review the artclasses at Bhavan in toto, onehas to say that Kalabharathihas evolved into an art learningcentre with a host of learningopportunities.

Staggered timings of theclasses allow aspirants to learnmore than one art form at thesame venue, learning in groupscreates a lively atmosphere whilenurturing a competitive spirit, asense of camaraderie helps indeveloping inter-personal skills, keeps youngsters pleasantlyoccupied during weekends--overall grooming a new set ofappreciators of classical arts.

A major thrust of learningat the Bhavan is exposure toperformances, the innumerablecultural shows at its premisesdoubling as a ready and familiarvenue for the students.

Reviving fading arts hasrendered the Bhavan platforma nurturer of rare arts, opening upprecious forms to the studentstoo.

Held under the MathoorKrishnamurti MemorialEndowment, the annualcultural event of Kalabharathithis year will be held everyweekend at the Bhavan fromNov. 6, when the paintings ofthe art students will be ondisplay.

The five-year diplomacourses are split into annualcertificate courses, with 70aspirants receiving theircertificates this year at theconvocation that will be part ofthe Kalabharathi anniversary.

Rajyotsava - 2016

This year’s Rajyotsava

celeberation features a wholespectrum of performing art showsranging from folk forms andyakshagana to sugama sangeethaand classical dance. Got up inassociation with RotaryInternational District 3190,the highlight of the culturalprogramme, Sambhrama,is a feast of classical dancestyles—Dances of India—which incorporates all sixclassical forms, besides sand art,and earthy rhythm instruments.

Directed by Smt. B.Bhanumathi, well-establishedteacher known for hersuccessful experimentationsin Bharathanatyam, andconceptualized by Dr. R.V.Raghavendra of Ananya, a highlyregarded classical arts institution,

the show is truly in keeping withboth the spirit and meaning ofRajyotsava; the language ofcommunication as in the lyricsfor the dance, or the folk formsoriginating from Karnataka, will be in Kannada. In this sensetoo, Sambhrama is an apt showfor the occasion.

Kathakali, Kuchipudi,Odissi, Kathak, Mohiniattamand Bharatanatyam will cometogether on a single platform, representing the entirecountry, while resonatingwith Kannada lyrics. Chande,Bootha Kunitha, maddale, and tala will bring to fore whatis quintessentially Karnatakafolk dance and music.

Sri Raghavendra Hegde, sand artist will add variety to theshow at Chowdiah MemorialHall, at 4 pm.

OBITUARY

Yusuf Arakkal’s tremendousenergy, palpable and infectious, injected itself into positive vibes andoptimism in all those around him.It poured into his art as creativityin different genres, encompassingsculpture, painting, mural art, installations and even writing.

The rebellious young teenagerwho ran away from Kannur,Kerala, to make Bengaluru hishome in the Sixties, could havewell turned out snooty and aloof—he was, after all, self-made, thevery hard way, saw worldlysuccess, and remained on topthereupon, financially andartistically.

Yusuf was a humanitarian;Bhavan too did not remainuntouched by his warmth.A cultural organization such as theBhavan mourning the passingaway of a world renowned artistdoes so for the loss of an artheritage as personified through theartist. Here at the BengaluruBhavan, it is an unstinted supportbase that has been lost—Yusuf wasa large-hearted encourager of art.

In Bhavan, Yusuf saw areflection of a cultural cause closeto his heart, Bhavan’s art campsand shows wooing him as an avid

art lover. Every time Bhavanapproached him for participatingin its visual arts activities, Yusufwas there, expressing hisunflinching support.

“Yusuf always accepted aninvitation from Bhavan. Hissupport was as much stated assilent. His passing away is apersonal loss to me,” says BhavanDirector Sri H. N. Suresh.

Recalling his decades-longassociation with Yusuf, right fromthe early Sixties, Sri Suresh sayshe was very creative in hisapproach and had an eye fordetail, particularly in bringing outemotions into art works. “Thishelped him to become a prominentartist. His innovative efforts, which helped him branch off toallied arts such as installations, aided him in standing the test oftime, his contemporary approachfurther fuelling his creativity”.

“He was a great human being. He used to respond to theproblems of the art community, andstood by them in his own way”,recalls Sri Suresh.

This is also how people willremember Yusuf— a humanitarianartist with a golden heart.

Dr. K A Ashok Pai

Dr. K A Ashok Pai, wellknown psychiatrist and Director,Mental Health Task Force,Karnataka, was a householdname in the field of mental health, his Manasa nursing homefor psychiatric treatment inShivamogga having providedsuccour to many.

For Dr. Pai, creatingawareness on mental health, removing the taboos associatedwith it, and making treatment forthe mentally ill easily accessible, was an aim that drove him toexplore different media todisseminate this information.

This made Dr. Pai seekout the Bhavan to start coursesfor grooming mental healthprofessionals, the one-year PGdiploma course of BVB inassociation with ManasaEducational Foundation forMental Health begun in 2005,drawing even professionalssuch as dentists and medicos.

Psychiatrists too made use ofthe course to hone their skills asconfidantes, non-partisan listenersand develop empathy with theirpatients, the courses themselvesrunning into corporate, child andadvanced counselling, mentalretardation, sexuality and sexualcounselling and substancedependence counselling.

The broad content of thecourses designed by Dr. Paicovered the gamut of problemsfaced across sections and agegroups.

His introductory classes foreach of the courses meant a lotto the students. His trips toBengaluru were incompletewithout a visit to the Bhavan. Hisenthusiastic presence will bemissed at the Bhavan, yet thecourses set up by him will becontinued with equal zeal andensure that his was not a lostcause.
