humidity, and furnace-blasted dry air can

leave your skin dry, flaky, and itchy. Every-

one needs to protect his or her skin from

drying out in winter, but if you have certain

skin conditions, you should step up your

routine to keep your skin healthy.

“Winter itch is a common name for the skin

symptom of generalized itching in winter.

While most commonly seen in the elderly

and those with a history of asthma, allergies

and eczema, anyone can experience winter

itch,” says Dr. Vishakha Gigler, a board certi-

fied dermatologist.

With that in mind, here are a few steps

everyone can take to prevent and relieve

dry itchy skin in wintry weather:

• Avoid irritants. Try to avoid products

that can irritate your skin, such as fragrance,

dryer sheets, and fabric softeners. Use a

hypoallergenic laundry detergent and wear

soft fabrics such as cotton.

• Add humidity to your home and office.Portable humidifiers or those that work with

your heating system put moisture into the

air that will be absorbed naturally by your

skin and hair.

• Wear sunscreen. Sunscreen may make

you think of the beach, but it’s important in

winter, too. Apply a moisturizing, broad-

spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to

exposed areas to protect from the sun’s

harmful UV rays before heading outdoors.

Look for sunscreens with hyaluronic acid in

them.

• Moisturize after showering. The most

important thing with regards to bathing is

your follow-up routine. Pat your skin dry

with a towel and then apply a thick moistur-

izer. Apply in the morning and at night.

• Alleviate winter itch: To alleviate itch

safely and effectively, toss a topical treat-

ment into your bag for the day. A topical

non steroid-based treatment providing fast

itch relief is best, and will help you avoid

side effects like skin thinning, stretch marks,

increased bruising and enlarged blood ves-

sels. For example, TriCalm is a steroid free,

fast acting itch relief gel that is five times

more effective than steroid-based hydrocor-

tisone 1% at reducing itch. More informa-

• Protect against windburn. When head-

ing outside on cold days, avoid windburn

sardines, and avocados. These foods pro-

ner than most parts of the body and has

fewer oil glands. That means it's harder to

keep your hands moist, especially in cold,

dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and

cracking. Wear gloves outside; if you need to

wear wool to keep your hands warm, slip on

a thin cotton glove first, to avoid any irrita-

tion the wool might cause.

While this magic number of 20percent will save you from pay-ing Private Mortgage Insurance(PMI), an added insurance policythat protects the lender if youare unable to pay your mort-gage, you can pay considerablyless than this if you want.

“Today's consumers persistentlyoverestimate the size of a downpayment they need to finance ahome,” says Christina Boyle, SVPand Head of Single-Family Sales& Relationship Management atFreddie Mac.

According to the results of arecent survey conducted by Zel-man & Associates, 39 percent ofthose surveyed estimated thatthe minimum down paymentrequirement for a home is atleast 15 percent of the purchaseprice. The reality is quite differ-ent however, as qualified buyerscan get a conventional mort-gage with a down payment ofas little as three percent.

In fact, recent statistics showmore than one in five borrowerswho took out conventionalmortgages in 2014 put down 10percent or less.

Educating potential homeowners on therules of down payments – and availableassistance programs – plays a large role ingetting qualified borrowers off the side-lines and into homeownership, accordingto Boyle, who also notes that today's his-torically low mortgage rates, coupledwith affordable home prices in manyparts of the country, make it an attractive

time to consider buying.

“If putting 20 percent down will depleteall of your savings and leave you with nofinancial cushion, it's probably not in yourbest interest,” she says.

If you don’t put down 20 percent, thecost of PMI varies based on your loan-to-value ratio – the amount you owe onyour mortgage compared to its value –and credit score, but you can expect to

pay between $30 and $70 per month forevery $100,000 borrowed. While it’s nodoubt an added cost, it enables buyers topurchase now and begin building equityversus waiting five to 10 years to buildenough savings for a larger down pay-ment.

Additionally, once you've built equity of20 percent in your home, you can cancelyour PMI and remove that added expensefrom your monthly payment.
