Pollution During Festivals and Health!
Indians usually celebrate their festivals and grand occasions with firecrackers which are becoming significant contributors to air
pollution in India. Fireworks contain chemical species such as sodium oxalate, aluminium, arsenic, sulphur, manganese, iron dust
powder, potassium perchlorate, strontium nitrate and barium nitrate etc. Air pollution levels along with Respirable Suspended
Particulate Matter (RSPM) – dust, fumes, smoke, and gases – is way above permissible limits in many of our big cities. Firework
activities during festivals are responsible for an increase in Total suspended particulate matter (TSPM) by an average of three times
higher in many locations. This level sees a quantum jump during festivals, the main culprits being crackers, inflammable substances,
and artificial colors. Studies by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) conclude that, RSPM levels doubled during Diwali in
all the big cities. Apart from the noise, crackers release a lot of toxic gases like Sulphur dioxide and Nitrogen dioxide which can lead
to many health problems. Air pollution during Diwali festival is found several folds higher as compared to the 24-h standard of
National Ambient Air Quality Standards of India (NAAQS) given by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), India.
Concentrations of metallic elements analysed in fireworks aerosol samples in previous studies in India reported its higher
contribution during Diwali festival as compared to the limit value of NAAQS of India. The noise levels in the Indian cities during the
night of Diwali festival were also found to be higher.Air pollution can lead to lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic
respiratory diseases, and allergies in adults. It can also cause acute respiratory infections in children. Suspended particulate matter
can cause asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory disease. Sulphur dioxide can damage lungs and lead to lung disorders like
wheezing and shortness of breath. Oxides of Nitrogen can cause skin problems, eye irritation, and cause respiratory problems in
children. Chemicals used in crackers like lead, magnesium, cadmium, nitrate, sodium, and others can have various harmful effects.
As rightly said by Swami Vivekanand "You can do anything and everything!", we can control ourselves and keep away from
involving fireworks and encourage others to stop polluting the air on our mother Earth. There are number of means by which we can
celebrate our joy. All the learned readers are expected and requested to make a serious note of our humble appeal to stop fireworks
and encourage others to do the same.
Suhas G. Sapate, Dr. Anil B. Gonde. On behalf of SGGS IE&T Nanded, Director, All teaching and non-teaching staff, we wish you all
A VERY HAPPY DIWALI and A PROSPEROUS DIWALI PADWA We expect you all to take care of our Nature and Environment by keeping yourself away from hazardous & polluting firecrackers.
