Peterstown Middle School By Peterstown 7th Grader Billie Dicken The Peterstown Mid- dle School Empowerment Academy held a conference at the Four Fillies Lodge in Peterstown, West Virginia. They were joined by several prominent com- munity members of Mon- roe County throughout the day. They were first joined by WV Students Against Destructive De- cisions (SADD) Director, Trevor Darago, who taught the students team building strategies as well as what it means to be a leader. Part of the Empower- ment Academy focuses on career development. The students took a survey that helped them decide what careers they were interested in. During the luncheon part of the conference, which was provided by Sun Fresh Market, students dined with community members that were currently in jobs that they are interested in. The students wore matching polo shirts and practiced their etiquette skills during lunch. While they were eating they asked the mem- bers about jobs as well as organizational skills, education, and experience. The students were polite and respectful and repre- sented the Empowerment Academy well. The Empowerment Academy students are plan- ning a carnival at the end of the school year to help raise money for the playground that will be at the new Peterstown school. All students are very excited about what is to come and are thankful for these experiences. In collaboration with the West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness, Com- munity Action of South Eastern WV will be co- ordinating a street count of individuals experienc- ing homelessness begin- ning Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 4:00 pm until Thursday, January 23, 2020 at 3:59 pm. During this 24-hour period volunteers and the local service agency staff will collect information on the homeless population in Monroe County. The Point-in-Time Count seeks to identify the number of homeless individuals and families in the county. The count measures the needs of those experiencing home- lessness and provides direc- tion for future development of services. Results from the count provide agencies in the area with vital infor- mation to be able to seek funding to provide services for individuals experienc- ing homelessness. In order to prepare for the Point-in-Time Count, Community Action of South Eastern WV will be leading a series of trainings that will enable volunteers to assist with the count. Volunteers will be equipped with the skills to reach out to and assist this vulnerable population.
