IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE VIOLET HILLS SALEAs breeders, we know that it is very important to select bulls that are appropriate for your production systems and the markets that you aim at. The possible restrictions that are or may be imposed on us during this pandemic may hinder you personally assessing the bulls or travelling to the sale.

This makes it more important than usual that we do all we can to assist you with your selections and hopefully purchases.

At the time of going to print we still plan to have the sale following the usual format of a physical sale that is linked to Auctions Plus and supported by phone link-ups where needed.

We believe that our sale set up will allow for appropriate social distancing as required by the government in an effort to control the spread of this virus.

We would strongly encourage potential buyers, where possible, to inspect the bulls prior to the sale and operate remotely during the auction. If anyone has the slightest doubt about their own health or is prevented from attending the sale for any reason, please contact us. We will do our best to give you an accurate assessment of any of the bulls, which we hope, will help you with your selections.

All of us at Violet Hills, with the support of Elders, are committed to doing whatever we can to meet our clients requirements during these difficult times.

Please contact either the Elders agents or the Jenkins family immediately prior to the sale in case the sale format has had to be modified.

All of us at Violet Hills extend a warm welcome and invitation to attend our 10th Annual on property sale.

We are once again pleased to present a very good line up of bulls that are of the unique type that we have been developing over the 40 plus years that we have been breeding Charolais. Our emphasis on a genuine early maturity pattern have made us leaders in producing Charolais that excel in grass fed beef production. We see no place for the long headed, leggy, late maturing types that are giving the breed a bad name.

All of the bulls have been drenched for liver fluke and worms on the 21/2/2020 as well as a 7:1 booster. They have also been vaccinated for pestivirus and pink eye.

After over 40 years of breeding Charolais we believe that we have gone a long way to producing the type of Charolais that suits the young grass fed beef market. This type of Charolais is also ideal for feedlot finishing as demonstrated by our purebred steers winning the Australian National Steer and Carcase competition in 2011 and 2015 and taking out the major awards for carcase quality and carcase yield most years that the competition has been run.

The last couple of years of extreme drought conditions over most of eastern Australia has placed a lot of financial and emotional stress on beef producers. The reduction of breeding cow numbers, in most herds, makes it more important than ever for beef producers to produce as high a quality product as possible. We believe that this can be achieved by using Violet Hills bulls. This is supported by the very positive feedback that we continually receive from our clients.

As well as producing easy doing, easy care cattle we have culled very heavily against poor temperament and poor hoof structure in our cattle. Needless to say, we do not trim the feet of our bulls.

This crop of bulls were raised under drought conditions, being early weaned in the summer and then grown out on a ration of cereal hay with access to protein pellets. Most of them are moderately framed, early maturing types, that we have found to be ideal for producing quality, high yielding progeny that are sought by the beef industry.

Our motto is: “We will not be beaten on quality”

Best Wishes, Daryl, Kaye, Sean and Kirsty

We started breeding Charolais in 1972. Because we had very limited finances we were restricted to using AI over British Breed cows to start an upgrading programme. This was a long and often frustrating process. While we were convinced that Charolais had a lot to offer the beef industry in Australia many of the imported genetics did not result in the type of cattle that we aimed to produce. We noticed that in Australia with our diverse pasture types, breeds of cattle and market requirements that different types of Charolais were needed for the breed to be truly successful in different locations.

Our aim is to produce a type of Charolais that suits the high quality temperate pastures of southern Australia. That is, an easy doing, easy calving animal that can be finished at a young age on grass. To produce these animals we mainly rely on selecting some of the best bulls that we produce each year and using them in our breeding programme. We find that this is more successful than experimenting with unproven genetics or genetics that are appropriate to other countries and production systems.

The most important judges of our cattle are our clients and their feedback is very valuable to us.

This year the Violet Hills herd has been reduced to about 250 breeding cows because of the prolonged drought.

Health: Violet Hills is a jbas 7 accredited property and all bulls have been properly vaccinated for clostridium diseases, leptosporosis, pestivirus and pink eye. All have been drenched for fluke and worms. At Violet Hills it is our policy to NOT trim hooves. Any animal that exhibits problems with their hoof structure is culled. This includes all cows as well as the bulls. All bulls are available for inspection prior to the sale (by appointment) as well as the morning of the sale from 10am.

Breeding Guarantee: All bulls are guaranteed breeders. Any claim against the breeding ability of a purchased animal should be made in writing, within 6 months, and accompanied by a veterinary certificate stating that the bull is infertile or incapable of natural service, and that, in his/her opinion, the bull has not suffered any injury or maltreatment, which could have affected its breeding ability, since delivery to the purchaser. Any animal failing to breed may be either replaced with a similar animal or have the purchase price refunded on the return of the animal to “Violet Hills”. This guarantee does not include interest, expenses, costs or damages this process may involve. All costs incurred for this process, will be at the purchaser’s expense. This guarantee does not include problems caused by accident, disease or management after the fall of the hammer.

Inspection: We encourage prospective buyers to inspect the cattle prior to the sale. This enables us to give a more personalised response to any questions. The animals will be available for inspection from 10am on sale day.

Accommodation: Accommodation is available at Oberon (40 mins), Lithgow (30 mins), Bathurst (50 mins) and Hampton (10 mins). Please contact us for assistance.

Delivery: Delivery instructions, in writing, must be given for stock awaiting delivery. All care of the stock will be taken during holding but no responsibility will be accepted for injury or loss during this period. Ownership of the stock will pass to the successful purchaser on the fall of the hammer. We recommend that you insure your purchases. Violet Hills may be able to assist with delivery of the bulls and a freight subsidy may apply. Please make arrangements with either Daryl or Sean if you would like us to deliver the bull(s), as we will do so at a capped fee of $200.00 per head to many NSW and VIC destinations. For Tasmanian purchases, we will deliver to Pages depot in Melbourne under a similar arrangement. The delivery fee will be added to the account sales. All care and no responsibility will be taken while awaiting delivery and during delivery.

Caring for your new bull: When taking your young bull home, it is a good idea to have a welcoming group of cows or steers to help him settle into his new environment. His preparation will enable him to go to work as soon as needed. As he is still growing he should be kept on good quality feed, before, during and after being with your cows.

We strongly advise against running your new bull with older bulls during joining. Your young bull will run the risk of being injured. He will also get very few calves as he will be dominated by the older bulls.

PLEASE NOTE: It is unethical for anyone to promote, advertise or arrange the sale of any cattle, other than those in the sale, on the sale premises.

IMPORTANT NOTICES: While all care is taken in compiling the catalogue, the vendors give no guarantee to the accuracy of the information contained in it. All persons who attend the sale do so entirely at their own risk and the Selling Agent, its members, subsidiary or related corporations, officers, agents, employees and its principals for themselves and for those for whom they act, do not assume or accept any responsibility or liability of whatever nature for any injury or damage whatsoever which may occur.

Bring gumboots, a jumper and coat. The sale ring is undercover, however

the cattle are in the open and the weather can be unpredictable.

Charolais BREEDPLANEstimated Breeding Values (EBVs)

EBVs are aimed at putting value on certain traits. These values can be compared with the breed average value for that trait for those recorded animals that have been born in the same year. An accuracy figure gives the percentage chance that these allocated values will be achieved. For young animals with limited recordings there can be very big changes in their EBVs as more measurements are made as they get older.

In our opinion, EBVs can give an indication of how they compare to their mates in the same herd. Caution should be used when comparing animals in different herds unless the accuracy of the figures is above 80%.

Australian Charolais Selection Indexes

There are three standard selection indexes calculated for Australian Charolais animals. All are expressed in $ per progeny returns, to the producer, when that animal is used.

These are: 1. Domestic Index (Dom) 2. Export Index (Exp) 3. Northern Terminal Index (N Term)

Each selection index has been developed for a different production/market scenario

1. Domestic Index Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (e.g. Angus) targeting grass finished production for the domestic trade. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 430 kg (240 kg HSCW and 6 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

Page 9: Violet Hills Charolais · Scanning and Weighing: All bulls will be scanned and weighed prior to the sale and EBV’s will be updated. A supplementary sheet will be available when

2. Export Index

Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (e.g. Angus) targeting the production of steers for export markets. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 700 kg (380 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 29 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback a positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

3. Northern Terminal Index

This index is probably of little interest for producers in the southern states.

Charolais BREEDPLAN

At Violet Hills we have achieved continued improvement in both indexes and for a number of years have exceeded the Charolais breed average for both the Domestic and Export Indexes. Special emphasis continues to be

placed on calving ease and the ability to finish at a young age.

Jacquard is a thick, easy care polled bull, whose calves are thick and impressive from the day they are born. He is a trait leader for low birth weight and has a Domestic Index which is in the top 10% for the breed. Being a very early maturing bull, his calves can easily be turned off at a young age as prime vealers. The strength of Jacquard is having the very good doing old cow VHV X9E on both sides of his pedigree. He is a trait leader for low birth weight.

Australian National Field Days (Orange) Steer and Carcase competition results

Violet Hills entered two teams of purebred Charolais steers in the Australian National Field Days Steer and Carcase competition 2017-2018. We had two different sire groups. Both teams were from the bottom end of the pure bred calves out of first calf heifers. This resulted in lower carcase weight and only average performance on grain. When the steers were slaughtered the results were very pleasing.

► 1st and 2nd for dressing percentage

► 1st and 3rd for MSA eating quality

► 2nd and 4th for saleable meat yield

► 2nd and 3rd for carcase quality

One team came 3rd overall in the competition.

This clearly demonstrates to us that we are producing the type of Charolais that performs very well as a purebred and does not need to be crossed with British breeds to meet industry requirements.
