ABOUT THE LOCATION

Like many of the genteel villages in the vicinity of Du-brovnik, Orašac was favoured by the Dubrovnik nobility who built their summer residences here and surrounded them with orange and lemon groves, vineyards and or-chards. Centuries later, and for a different type of holiday maker, Dubrovnik Sun Gardens was built, which is now enjoying a renaissance as a successful resort with a hotel and holiday homes.

Villa Soderini lies at the entrance to Orašac, amid olive groves and with beautiful views of the sea, the islands and Dubrovnik in the distance.

Villa Soderini stands in the exact place where the Flor-entine statesman Piero Soderini took refuge after being deposed in his home town. Exiled from Florence by the Medici upon their return to power, Soderini found solace in the scenery which reminded him of Tuscany, with its tall cypresses and olive groves.

A strong believer in the republican institutions, and re-membered as a modest and wise ruler, Soderini appointed Niccolo Macchiavelli as his chancellor. Machiavelli – a his-torian, politician, diplomat and writer, considered one of the founders of modern political science, enjoyed com-plete liberty to create his literary works during this period.

Piero Soderini was admired and respected by the small community that welcomed him with open arms, and we would like Villa Soderini to give you the same warm wel-come, as well as a tiny slice of history.

THE CONCEPT
