  • The 13th Annual Fergie Jenkins Foundation just happened to take place on the 13th day of the thirteenth year of the new millenium. With Fergies health still in question due to his knee surgery, it seemed that the Foundation may have fallen on bad luck this year. But even that many unlucky numbers and surgery couldnt keep Fergie and the gang away from Rockway Vineyards for a round of golf, dinner and fun all while helping to give back to the community.

The three day event kicked off on September 11th with our annual celebrity bass fishing tournament taking place on the Niagara River. The following night Rockway Vineyards once again hosted our annual celebrity wine and cheese event where the public was able to come to meet and interact with some of their favourite celebrities from the world of sports.

The fishing tournament and wine and chesee event all led up to the annual tournament taking place on Friday September 13th. While participants in the practice round the previous day were hit with rain, luckily the rain held off for the tournament and despite a bit of colder weather everyone was able to play a full round.

Every year the Foundation strives to offer something different to our participants and so the Foundation staff decided to reach out to a whole new group of celebrity guests.

While the Foundation was more than happy to welcome

back some familiar names such as Toronto Blue Jays Jesse Barfield and Kelly Gruber, former CFLer Willie Bethea, Chicago Blackhawks Hall of Famer Pierre Pilote and Kansas City

Royals Willie Wilson. This year the Foundation welcomed some fresh faces like CFL great Damon Allen, NFL legend Thurman Thomas and NHL great Dennis Maruk.

As with all of the Foundations events the golf tournament was organized to help raise funds for a number of local secorts of charities. Volunteers from local chapters of Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Special Olympics and the Canadian Red Cross helped the Foundation

to make sure the event ran smoothly

The Foundation was once again able to hold a successful event and would like to extend our thanks to all those who help to make this event possible including our sponsors, our golfers, our celebrity guests and Rockway Vineyards for once again being such an amazing host to our event.

Sports fans and collectors gathered on the weekend of May 4th to 6th for the Sportcard and Memorabilia Expo held at the Toronto International Center in Mississauga. In its 44th year the expo includ-ed nearly 1000 tables with

sports and other memorabilia. The three day event offered fans and collectors the opportunity to receive signatures from and interact with some of their favourite professional athletes. The Foundation pulled out all the stops as it brought in not only one other Hall of Famer but four to join Fergie as he met and signed autographs for his Canadian fans. Fergie was joined by long time friend of the Foundation Gaylord Perry as well as Hall of Famers Andre Dawson, Rich Goose Gossage, and Phil Neikro. It was the first time that a group of five Hall of Famers had appeared at the event.

As always the Foundation set up one of the only baseball related booths at the event which had appearances from such hockey greats as Patrick Roy, and members of the 19993 Stanley Cup Winning Montreal Canadiens. Fergie and his Hall of Fame Friends signed auto-graphs in exchange for donations all helping to support the Canadian Red Cross. The Canadian Red Cross and the Foundation have had a long lasting relationship which dates back to beginning of the Foundation. While we often help to raise funds for the charity this event was different as the primary focus was to raise funds for the new Re-spectEd program. RespectED is aimed towards helping to prevent violence, bullying and abuse in society. The respect Ed program offers numerous online and in class programs for schools and organizations to un-derstand the importantce of and how to prevent any

Two decades had passed since the first Fergie Jenkins Charity Golf Classic was held. The event was still going strong as Fergie and the Foundation celebrated its 20th Anniversary. On June 14, Fergie and over 150 golfers teed up and spent the day golfing at the beautiful Rockway Vineyards in St. Catharines, ON. Rockway has become the official home of the Fergie Jenkins Charity Golf Classic as well as the Fergie Jenkins Celebrity Golf Classic. It always puts on a high class event for our golfers and sponsors. Participants were not only treated to a great day of golf but also a delicious meal held in the courses dinner bangquet. Fergie and the Foundation would like to ex-tend their thanks to all of our participants. We would also like to send out a special thank you to all of our generous sponsors and local organizations who were kind enough to donate to our prize table. Without our guests, sponsors and support from the local community this event would not be able to continue to be as suc-cessful as it is. We look forward to celebrating our 21st event next year and hope it will be just as successful.

The Foundation always prides itself on being a place where students of the region are able to gain valuable experience during their time studying at Brock University or Niagara College. This year the Foundation reached out to both schools and the response was over-whelming. Never before has the Foundation had to turn away students but we found ourselves doing just that at our September event. No less than a dozen students from Brock Uni-versity and Niagara College came to our September event and gave their help at our registration table, man-ning holes and setting up our dinner banquet. The Foundation would like to formerly welcome our newsest intern Courtney Luciano from Niagaras Sports Management program. We look forward to work-ing with her and are sure she will be a valuable addition to our team.

October 25th marked the 40 year anniversary of a trade that sent Fergie to the Texas Rangers in exhange for BIll Maddock.

Despite years of success with the Cubs and multiple seasons with 20 or more wins, after a dismal 1973 season the Cubs decided to rebuild and Fergie was the first to go.

While the Cubs had a poor season during 1973 Fergie had 25 wins during his first year with the Taxas Rangers.

Fergie would return for his last seasons with the Cubs in 1982. Fergie would retire and be inducted

Many see 1973 as the end of an era for the Cubs as they would not have a winning season again until 1984.

FOUNDATION ROAD MAPWHERE WEVE BEEN AND WHERE WERE GOING

  • 5If the World Series is the biggest event of the baseball season then the All Star Game comes in at a close second. Fans from across the U.S and the world gather to watch as their favourite players from Major

League Baseball team up and face off in the annual MLB All Star Game. Fans get the opportunity to watch as some of their favourite current players share the field for what may be the only time as the best of the National and American Leagues face off.

The All Star Game is just the conclusion to a week filled with exciting events known as All Star FanFest, which also includes the equally as exciting MLB Home Run Derby. Vendors from across the world set up booths selling autographs and memorabilia from the world of baseball . Fans also get the chance to meet some of their baseball heroes, past and present.

Fergie may have not been able to make it due to his knee surgey but that did not mean the Foundations presence would not be felt. The Foundations interns

packed up the trucks and hit the road towards New York City and Citi Field., home of the New York Mets and this years All Star Fest

The Foundation may have been without its namesake for the event, but a few friends of the Foundation made it out to show their support. Rollie Finers, George Foster, Bert Campaneris and Fergies old Texas team mate Gaylord Perry joined the Foundation at our booth to help raise funds for the Foundation and fill the void while Fergie was recovering. Friends of the Foundation such as Andre Dawson and Phil Neikro also stopped by the booth throughout the week to show their support of the Foundation in our time of need.

With proceeds being directed to JDRF and Breast Cancer Research, it was a great opportunity to raise money for charity. The Foundation is already anxiously awaiting next years All Star Fest which will take place in Minneoploas, home of the Mineestoa Twins.

    Curators Corner

Following the unveiling of the Fergie and Friends Black History Gallery, the curators continue to work towards opening the Fergie Jenkins Museum to the public. Throughout the past few months they have contin-ued to catalogue items from

Fergies life and career. The display cases have been filled with exhibits show-casing Fergies careers as well as artificats from other baseball and sports icons Fergie has collected over the years. One exhibit currently being worked on is a living Hall of Famer exhibit showcasing signed Major League Balls from members of the Hall of Fame who are still alive today. The Foundation and Museum staff contine to work hard towards the ultimate goal of opening the museum to

schools and other visitors. Our curators have already held numerous tours for interested guests and have even had a few celebrity guests stop by for a tour. Hall of Fame pitch-ers Rich Goose Gossage, Gaylord Perry and Phil Nei-kro made a special stop on their way to Toronto this past May. The three Hall of Famers were treated to a special tour of Fergies new museum given by Fergie and the curators. When the tour was done the four Hall of Famers became the first guests to sign the wheel of bats. Jim Mudcat Grant and other celebrity guests also gota special tour of the museum during their recent visit to St. Catharines for our September golf tournament.

After years of coping through knee pain Fergie finally decided that it was time to take some time off and get the knee replacement surgery that he desperately needed. Fergie would have the surgery in July and would be sidelined for eight to ten weeks of rehabili-tation. This meant that the Foundation was forced to go without its leader and its main source of revenue. The Foundation had to cancel a number of appear-ances during the summer months The Foundation staff and Fergie would like to thank all of its supporters and celebrity friends who helped us during this difficult time and helped us to continue to serve our mandate of serving humani-tarian need through the love of sport

The Boss Out for the Season

The Fergie Jenkins Foundation had the pleasure of working with Pierre Pilote as he debuted his new book The Heart of the Blackhawks at Blackhawks Fan Fest 2013. This was the first chance for anyone to get their hands on the new book and fans lined up to read all about the life of the Blackhawks great.

The event took place July 26-28 at the Hilton Hotel in Chicago, Illinois and celebrated the past, present and future of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Coming off a Stanley Cup victory over the Boston Bruins a month earlier, the fans were still celebrating the achievement while learning about the past of their franchise. Pierre took time to meet with fans and tell stories of some of the greats of the game.

The Fergie Jenkins Foundation thanks the Chicago Blackhawks for allowing the Foundation to be part of such a great event.

The Fergie Jenkins Foundation was thankful to once again be part of induction weekend at the Canadian baseball Hall of Fame in St. Marys, Ontario. The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame honoured Former Toronto Blue Jays George Bell, Former Montreal Expo Tim Rock Raines, Canadian and Former Blue Jay Rob Ducey, Blue Jays Legendary play-by-play man Tom Cheek as well as Nat Bailey, an influential part of Canadian baseball on the west coast.

The weekend began with a golf event and concluded with the Induction Ceremonies The town of St. Marys once again did a fabulous job hosting the event.

The Fergie Jenkins Foundation isalways proud to be a partner with the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and looks forward to next years Induction Ceremonies.

    Did you Know

The Foundation recently came across a contract no one knew existed. In 1975 Fergie Signed a contract with the NHLs St. Louis Blues. The contract was for one year and was for $1.00 While the contract was a publicity stunt, Fergie Did get the opportunity to skate with the team. Fans of Fergie may know that while he made a caeer as a baseball player, his first love was hockey.

For the second year in a row the Foundation helped organize the Columbus Clippers Fantasy Camp in Columbus, Ohio. Celebrity guests and coaches included Lee May, Tommy Helms, Bert Camapneris, Len Barker, Joe Charboneau. The event also marked Fergies official return to work following his knee surgery. Over the course of the three days the campers were taught the fundamentals of the game by some of the best players to step foot on a ball diamond.

The first two days of camp lead up to a match up of Team Jenkins vs Team Barker during the last day of camp. In the end Team Barker prevailed. The awards dinner concluded the festivities where two cheques were donated to military based fundraising programs. The event was once again a success as the campers and the Foundation looks forward to the announcement of the 2014 fantasy camp dates.

  • 9November Signing

This November the Foundation decided to make an appearance at the Fall Toronto Sportcard and Memora-bilia Expo. The Foundation has not appeared at the event for the past few years but saw it as another opportunity to help raise funds for one of our favourite charities, the Canadaian Red Cross. Fergie and the Foundation were joined by a few of our friends at the event. Fellow Hall of Fame pitchers Gaylord Perry and Rollie Fingers joined Fergie at the booth in one of Rollies first Canadian appearances in many years. Canadian Boxing legend George Chuvalo and NHL Hall of Famer and Stanley Cup Winner Pierre Pilote also joined the Foundation. Both Pierre and George were also promoting the release of their new books. The weekend long event just happened to coin-cide with the National Hockey Leagues Hall of Fame cer-emonies. The event featured apearances from such hockey legends as Mario Lemiex and Ed Balfour. While the event was predominantly hockey related baseball fans came out to meet with our guests and were more than happy to help with our cause.

On November 2nd Fergie received the 2013 Marcus Garvey Memorial Award during The Planet Africa Awards Gala in Toronto.

The ceremony commemorates individuals, business and organizations which, through their excellence and leadership, have

helped improve the lives of people of African Heritage.

This years Awards Gala was themed Celebrating the Dream to honour the 50 anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior I have a Dream Speech. The Gala. Fergie was in attendance to accept his award and to enjoy the event which included a speech from Dr. Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Matrin Luther King Jr.

in the States. The Medal is presented to those who have made an especially meritorious contribution to the secu-rity or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. FERGIE JENKINS OFF RELIEF, CUBS BIGGEST

    AUTHOR UNKNOWN- JUNE 8 1967

This is my longest winning streak, four straight, and I am going to try

to keep it going. Said Ferguson Jenkins, Chicago Cub right-hander after his 3-1 three-hitter over the

Philadelphia Phillies last night. For the season, Jenkins now

is 7-3, best since the Phils brought him up from the minors at the

end of the 1965 season. The Cubs got him in a trade early in the 66

campaign and for a while Manager

Leo Durocher was using him in relief.

He was a big strong kid, and only 22, and my club wasnt so

good- we were in last place from the start and I asked Jenkins what he wanted to do, start or work in

the bullpen, said Durocher. The guy really got me, he

said he wanted to relieve. Did you ever hear of a young pitcher who

didnt want to get in there and start?

So Durocher used Jenkins for relief until mid- season when I found he was doing such a good job for 2,3,4 innings that I figured he should be in there all the way.

Jenkins had a 6-8 record last season and the way hes going, says Durocher, should finish with 20

victories. I hope so, said Ferguson

who claims he manages to baffle hitters with his slider and curve,

and sometimes with a fast ball. He was the star of the

Miami Marlins pitching staff in 1962 and 1963.

    Ferguson struck out nine

and didnt walk a Phillie. He retired for the first nine batters. Then Tony Gonzalez opened the fourth with a

homer over the right field wall. He hit a good slider, said

Ferguson. The next 10 Phils went down in order before Rich Allen slashed a single into center. The third hit was a punch double by Doug Clemens

in the ninth. The Cubs scored all their

runs on homers- a bases empty blast by Adolfo Phillips, another

23-year-old ex-Phil, in the third and a two-run shot by Billy Williams, for

No. 10 this season, on the sixth. Jenkins said that despite

his near-perfect control the game wasnt the best hes pitched.
