Dena Solar says she has the coolest job in the world. “It’s fun to have a job where you come in and it’s just play time all the time.” Dena and her husband are the owners of the family owned and operated business Child’s Play, a vast indoor playground for kids 6 months to 6 years of age, equipped with ball pits, tunnels, slides, little roller coasters, cars and more. “We are a big healthy environment for kids to come in for great socialization and to have fun with their parents”, says Dena.

Dena was once a customer of the facility, bringing her own kids. She and her husband Joe took it over 7 years ago. A parent to three, Dena knows what parents value. “We keep our prices really reasonable; our memberships start at $17 a month, so the kids can come unlimited Monday through Friday.” In addition to the fun playtime, she adds, “We are about the cleanest kid’s place you’ll ever see.” Socks are required for children. For those six and over, there’s a lobby area to enjoy at no charge, to watch, eat, do homework, or play games.

Based in Temecula’s Old Town, Child’s Play becomes birthday central on weekends, offering a dynamic place to celebrate your child’s early birthday milestones. “I get to party all the time,” says Dena. She and her family also make time to give back to the communty--especially causes for children. With the help of her patrons, they recently loaded a truck load of donated toys and delivered to Rady’s Children Hospital in San Diego. “I get to meet a lot of great people,” says Dena.

Since the beginning of his career, there was a lot of shaking, rattling and rolling going on for famed rockabilly guitarist Buzz Campbell, though it wasn’t quite where you’d think he’d get started. “Somebody had a grand opening at this terrible beat up Laundromat…when you are learning to try to play, any place willing to listen to you, you will take.”

With a laundromat gig behind him, a guitar in hand and a destiny to be fulfilled —Buzz Campbell will tell you he put all his “eggs in one flimsy basket” and dedicated his passion and life to music. The result? Buzz has been a mainstay on the rockabilly scene for more than two decades. Since 2004, he’s been touring with original Stray Cats member, and double bassist, Lee Rocker.

Let’s add to that tune that he’s a former member of the Rock n’ Roll group, Sha Na Na, and the founder of San Diego based Rockabilly group Hot Rod Lincoln. It’s no wonder that a man influenced by a genre of music blended with rock ‘n’ roll and elements of good old-fashioned country music, would choose a tight knit community such as Temecula’s Morgan Hill to call home. Here, with his wife Patricia, son Drew, 10, and daughter Natalie, 7, he continues to rock this town.

Buzz’s first exposure to music came in the most wholesome form—a babysitter teaching him music on a toy piano. “I remember I was fascinated….my parent’s said ‘let’s get him piano lessons,’” recalls Buzz. His music interest transitioned to the guitar, and by high school Buzz had two passions; playing the guitar and surfing. It was the 1980s, and MTV was exploding on the music scene, yet Buzz was more into the sounds of the 50s and 60s. You’d find him listening to anything from Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis to the Beatles. He developed an affinity for things long past. “In high school, I started playing guitar and I got really into early rock and roll … I’ve always been into the nostalgic. I don’t know why. Even with surfing, I surfed long boards,” says Buzz who was raised in San Diego, CA.

With two scholastic parents, Buzz never felt like music was something he could pursue. However, one night of rock-n-roll changed the course of his life. On his 21st birthday, Buzz went to see the Stray Cats, the most popular neo-rockabilly band of the 1980s. “When I saw them I went ‘that’s what I’m going to do, that’s it.’ I mean it was life changing over night. I couldn’t believe all the sound I heard from three guys.”

The next day, Buzz dropped out of college and began a musical odyssey that would take him from playing his first gig at a dingy laundromat to playing on stage in front of thousands—and even

performing with the Stray Cats. “I really believed in the music I was playing. I really believed in early rock ‘n’ roll, I was so passionate about it. I just thought there is no way people wouldn’t dig this. I was just blinded by it.”

And Buzz was right, people did dig it. He founded Hot Rod Lincoln in the 90s, which earned them “Best Roots Rock and Roll Band” at the San Diego Music Awards an astonishing five times in a row. A pinnacle of Buzz’s career came when he went from Stray Cat fan to contemporary, finding himself working with the very guys who inspired him to play music. “Stray cats were like everything to me, all of sudden I’m Setzer and Lee Rocker is playing on guitar… it was amazing.” Brian Setzer also wrote a song for Buzz that he recorded and Lee Rocker produced the album. “He [Setzer] was like my hero. I saw him, dropped out of college and then all of a sudden, we’ve become friends somehow and I was thinking man I must be doing something right because [Setzer] not only had the biggest influence on me in the world but he just wrote me a song. So that was a pretty big deal.”

Hello Summer!Summer is more than a season, it’s a state of mind and for us, it’s all about FUN FUN FUN. Well as much fun as one can possibly squeeze in! We are ready for whatever the wonderful summer season will bring and the playful experi-ences that come along with SUMMER. Well as much fun as one can possibly squeeze in!

How are you going to enjoy the bright days ahead? Family BBQs? Visits to the zoo? Some surf and sand? Camping trips? Hanging out poolside?

For the Mantiply family, son Jacob, 12, is in full swing with baseball tournaments that will continue throughout the sum-mer, in chase of making it to the Little League World Series. Like any loyal baseball fan, the family will travel city to city cheering on Jacob to his state wide games and relishing in the adventures that will be sure to come their way.

For the Tomaselli family, we are hoping to make it back to one of my ultimate favorite vacations spots as a kid, Yo-semite National Park. Our last visit was a couple of years ago when we took our twin daughters who were then just two years of age. Admittedly, we may have been a bit ambitious taking our wee ones camping so young and we’ve been gun shy ever since, but now that the girls are five, we are once again ready for an outdoor adventure to unplug and unwind.

In this issue, we’ve included some must do’s during Temecula’s summer wonderland. Be sure to check out our “Glamping” article, all about Glamorous Camping for the whole family to enjoy! Stephanie and I were inspired by a certain creative someone (Regina Rodrigues from Jake Duke Studios..Shh!) to have a photo shoot like no other. It became a family and neighborhood affair. We recruited one of our favorite Morgan Hill families, The Holbrooks to be our Glamping family.

Why? Well, why not? We had a great time and hope it inspires you to discover something new and fanciful this summer.

On a celebratory note, this time of year marks an im-portant milestone for people throughout our community—graduation! Congratulations to all graduates and we wish you much success as you embark on a new chapter in your lives.

And finally, Happy Father’s Day to the incredible and amazing dads throughout our community and beyond. A very special and heartfelt thanks to each of our own hus-bands for making our family lives richer and quite simply, being the best dads ever, at least we think so.

Cheers to all and wishing you a wonderful kick off to summer!

Meet Your Neighbor... After our founding issue, one of the first readers we heard from was Kim Plancich. She told us about her dear grandfather Bud who lives in Morgan Hill. We’ve never met Bud, but he sounds like a pretty good guy. We were so touched by Kim’s email, we thought we would say a very special Happy Father’s day to Bud Jerke! Here’s a bit more about our fellow Morgan Hill neighbor shared with us by his grand-daughter Kim Plancich:

“Our family’s 91-year old patriarch, William “Bud” Jerke (later, Jerand), born in 1923, grew up in Grant’s Pass, OR and entered the National Guard at age 17. In WWII PFC Tailgunner Jerke was a member of the 10th Airforce, 7th Bomb Group, 436th Squadron stationed in Calcutta, India. He flew on B-24 Liberators and was awarded a Purple Heart after sustaining shrapnel wounds to his leg and foot from an explosion. He was a star pitcher both in the service and back home, and still enjoys playing ball with his great-grandkids!

Known as ‘Papa’ and ‘Mama’ to our family, Bud and his wife Patricia “Pat” owned a family floor covering business in Manhattan Beach, CA for 40 years. He retired a few years ago to Morgan Hill, and enjoys spending time with his 3 children,

4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Papa and Mama are, and were, the most inspirational, genuine, generous, loving people one could ever know.

You can always find Bud wherever children are, making them laugh by singing a silly song. His youthfulness, love of children and music brings joy to all those around him.

Happy Father’s Day, Papa, your family loves you so very much!”

Bud with his five Great-Grandchildren

From performing at home grown Temecula wineries to taking the road with Stray Cat, Lee Rocker, Buzz remains active in the music scene playing gigs all over the world. However, his biggest fans are at home. He’s been married to his wife Patricia for 14 years. “I just feel like I have such a good balance and that would have never been happened if I didn’t marry my wife and had kids and I’m just so happy that I did.” says Buzz.

Buzz’s son Drew says his friends tell him how cool his dad is, “I’m like I know.” Buzz’s daughter Natalie agrees, calling him “the best dad ever.” She received a special gift from her rockstar dad “For my birthday he made a song for me…I really liked it a lot.”

Buzz and his wife, Patricia, met when they were kids living a few houses down from each other in San Diego. “I knew him when he was a nice kid, an altar boy,” she says. “He is a very good dad… I’m at work and he’s the one who is getting them ready in the morning, it’s a good balance.” For 10 years, they have called Morgan Hill home. “I love how mellow it is, the view, the weather. I love that we are in the middle of big cities but we are a small town. I go all over the place and it’s such a great place to come home to,” says the talented rocker. “I love that everybody sorta knows each other, a lot of good people, same values. Everyone looks out for each other here, it’s a great town.’ he adds.

One unforgettable moment from his accomplished career came when his family came to one of his shows. He was playing with Pat Benatar and as the seats filled up with thousands of concert goers, Buzz recalls seeing his son Drew in the crowd. “I can see Drew’s face, oh my God, this is full on and it was like a moment for me…it was like, ‘Wow ,my son is so proud, he lit up’ …that will stick in my head for a long time...it was pretty cool.” If you want to check out more about Buzz Campbell, visit his website www.buzzcampbell.com.

Recipe From Your Neighbor...

Steak and Bacon TornadoesBy Becky Holbrook

1 to 1.5 lbs flank steakInstant, non-seasoned meat tenderizer½ lb bacon, cooked until almost done½ teaspoon garlic salt½ teaspoon pepper2 Tablespoons fresh parsley, choppedWooden toothpicks

Pound the flank steak to an even thickness, about ½ inch thick. Use the tenderizer according to directions. Sprinkle steak with garlic salt and pepper. Score the meat diagonally, making diamond shaped cuts. Place bacon strips lengthwise on the steak. Sprinkle with parsley. Roll up the steak in jelly-roll fashion (it’s easiest with 2 people!), starting at the narrow end. Be sure to keep the bacon in place as you roll. Once it’s rolled up, skewer through the roll with toothpicks at 1 inch intervals. If your toothpicks don’t go all the way through, you may need to put them on both sides of steak roll. Once the skewers are in place, slice the meat into 1 inch slices with a serrated knife. You may need to adjust some toothpicks after slicing. Grill over medium heat to desired doneness. Most importantly, besides enjoying it, remove all

toothpicks before taking a bite! Pairs wonderfully with a Malbec!

By Regina RodriguesWith summer right around the corner, the chatter of camping has already begun in our household. As my kids begin getting excited about fishing, hiking and lots of swimming, all I can think about are the stressful things that come along with camping. You know, the 12 hours of building our tent the first day and realizing half way through that we forgot the poles , bringing so much fire wood that we could possibly survive a full year in the woods, or the sleeping bags that really should be called awake bags because you never really fall asleep!

Well, I used to feel stressed until I heard about a new way of camping for our family. Imagine no longer bringing a tent, firewood or sleeping bags...Does it sound too good to be true? Well not anymore! Glamour and camping have finally joined forces and have created Glamping-a new term for people who enjoy the outdoors without wanting to sacrifice the little luxuries life brings them.

Whatever glamping destination you decide on, whether a hut, airstream, villa, tent or tree-house you will have the luxury of driving up to your glamping spot and enjoy immediately. The only question you will have to ask yourself is, “Do I feel like having red or white wine tonight?” For further information on glamping destinations, visit www.glamping.com

FUN IN THE SUN GIVEAWAY

by our fave Beauty Blogger Amber Sayas

Well hello Summer, and hello heat! It’s about to be a scorcher. So bring out the SPF and the bright nail polish, I’m ready for summer to begin. I thought I’d share with all of you some of my summer essentials. I try to be a minimalist, but that’s still a work in progress. One thing I have found to be handy dandy is a bathing suit pouch. It’s always nice to have somewhere to stash that wet bikini without getting anything else wet. SPF is a must have, Aveeno Active Naturals in SPF 30 is always good to protect from those rays.

Don’t stop there; it’s always good to protect your lips. I like to use Baby Lips by Maybelline with an SPF 20. When it comes to bright nail polish my favorite is Wet n Wild “Megalast”. When I’m done poolside, I like to refresh by wiping off all the sweat and grime with Ponds wet cleaning towelettes. Now I may not have gotten tan from the sun, but I like to fake it with Wet n Wild bronzer in “Ticket To Brazil” and finish my look with my favorite lipstick by NYC Expert Last Lip Color in “Smooch”.

WORLD OF COLOR…AND WINE!

If you are looking for a fun night out, and open to exploring your creative side, The Paint Barrel in Temecula might be the perfect place for you—their art studio provides guests a colorful social experience with paint and wine included! They offer entertainment based art classes. Led by a professional art instructor, participants create their own masterpieces, with a paint brush in one hand and wine in the other.

“Everything is structured around people who never picked up a paint brush, so it’s kind of paint by numbers without the numbers, and add some wine and music and there you go…it’s a lot of fun,“ says owner Nicki Mosier. The unique art classes run about two hours and by class end, artistic neophytes will walk away with their very own art piece.

Nicki opened the art studio nearly a year ago, “ My husband is a Marine, I was a stay at home Mom and I wanted something of my own.” Although not an artist herself, she thought it was a great concept that wasn’t available, “I jumped in to the deep end and didn’t know what I was doing… it’s been very empowering.” She says the response has been amazing, “People love it... they get so excited and everybody leaves so proud of themselves.”

Whether it’s date night, girls night or a “me night”—the Paint Barrel is a Temecula destination to check out - and no artistic ability or experience is required says Nicki, “Whether you paint or draw stick

figures, it doesn’t matter. I mean after middle school art classes when do you get an oppor-tunity to paint on art canvas?”

Visit www.thepaintbarrel.com for more information.

Drama Queen! If you don’t know Jennifer Stuart, your children just might. Jennifer is a full time drama teacher at Vail Ranch Middle School, where she has been teaching for more than 10 years. Jennifer says, “I can’t stress the

importance of kids to be involved in something that gives them a voice and a creative outlet.”

In addition to teaching drama, Jennifer, a Morgan Hill resident, runs the city of Temecula’s Youth Musical Theater Program which she started five years ago, “It started with 30 kids…then it doubled and tripled” says Jennifer. “I love working with kids in an environment where I can see them play and be kids instead of having to just sit at their desk and do book work.”

Peter Pan JR is the latest musical she is directing, opening in June with performances at the Old Town Community Theater, “It’s the new Disney version, we have a lot of songs, a lot of dance …it’s a really big ensemble piece, there are lead roles obviously but everyone has a lot of face time. It’s a lot of excitement and movement and just a lot of fun.” To assist her in directing over 100 young performers over a 16 week rehearsal period, Jennifer works with a vocal coach and choreographer, “It helps to have professionals that

know the subject area really well.”

She adds the process to get to opening night is a collaborative effort, “by the end it becomes less here is a song, here is a dance, here is scenery, it becomes an entire production that you work on as a cast. I guess that is the most impressive. You watch kids become a theater family…it’s really pretty amazing to watch and to be a part of it.”

For Tickets to Peter Pan JR, visit www.temeculatheater.org. If your child is interested in participating in a future musical production, auditions will be held in September for Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, with the show opening in December.

Low-Water Plants with

Pizzazz!By Melissa McCabe Navaroli

Morgan Hill neighbors who want to be responsible with their water use can still have colorful, vibrant landscape plantings, but only if they know what to use and where to plant it.

Here are some of our favorite low-water plants that have pizzazz:

Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia Leucantha) is an absolutely striking plant that draws attention in any landscape. The silver-white foliage creates a

beautiful foliage contrast when planted next to green bushes. The tall, fuzzy purple flowers (reach-ing up to 6’) bring hummingbirds in from far and wide. Use at the back of the border or as a unique accent plant.

Gaura ‘Rosy Jane’ (gaura lindheimeri) is a lovely bi-color variety of Gaura with a compact 2’ growth habit. With a very long taproot that reaches deep into

the earth to grab water, Gaura can withstand long periods of drought all the while blooming beautifully with butterfly attracting flowers. This plant has a graceful open habit with stems that sways beautiful-ly in the breeze.

Bulbine ‘Yellow’ (bulbine frutescens) is a unique low-growing plant that reaches less than 2’ tall. Its pencil-shaped green leaves are great at holding water to pro-

tect it during droughts. The yellow flowers bloom in flushes all throughout the year. This hardy plant can grow in partial shade and the full sun.

Rockrose (cistus corbariensis) is a plant that comes in over a dozen different colors and growth habits. Most do very well on hillsides (they spread to about 6’) and can

withstand substantial neglect and poor soils. It blooms in springtime when the soil temperatures increase and the hours of daylight lengthen.

Spreading Germander (teucrium cha-maedrys) is a naturally dwarf plant that makes an excellent front border plant or pathway edger. Reaching only 12” high,

it rarely needs to be trimmed, making it not only a very low water, but also a low maintenance plant. The cheerful purple flowers arrive early to mid-summer and withstand the hottest tempera-tures beautifully.

An Alarming Epidemic

By Lindsay Bingham R.N., BSN

As a parent, what is your biggest health concern when it comes to your children? Is it safety? Are you most worried about the risk of childhood abduction? Drug abuse? Smoking?

Research shows that the number one concern among parents in the United States is childhood obesity. Because one in three American kids and teens are obese or over weight, it is easy to see why!

Children who are overweight or obese are at risk for a lifetime of disease, physical, social, and emotional complications. Hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, asthma, sleep disorders, and of course, type 2 diabetes, are the comorbidities our youth can look forward to if something doesn’t change. In just two decades, it is expected that 95% of our population will be over weight or obese. Sadly enough, this is the first generation that is expected to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

So, how can we turn these numbers around? What can we do, as parents, to improve the quality of life for our children, and help them to lead long, healthy lives?

First and foremost we can be an example! Healthy living is a way of life the entirefamily can participate in. Strong science supports the benefits of eating a healthful diet, which includes nutrient dense foods across all food groups. The importance of including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources should not be

underestimated. Challenge your family members to eat every color of the rainbow throughout their day…have fun with it! Get the conver-sation going in your household regarding healthy food options vs. those that are “treats.” Completely eliminating an entire food group isn’t necessary... moderation is the key.

Next, get moving! The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly advocates for the prevention of obesity through physical activity. Children today are far less active than ever. With access to video games, computers, and all other electronic devices, the days of playing tag, riding bikes, and just being outdoors, is nearly obsolete. Living in a beautiful city like Temecula, there is really no excuse to NOT be outdoors!

Start by making simple goals, and get started being the change our country needs to see!
