TNOU to offer 19 skill-based coursesThe Tamil Nadu Open University has added 19 skill-based
diploma and certificate courses from the current academic year.These include courses in the health sector, computerapplication,fashion design, catering , plumbing and home appli-ances repair and services. TNOU Vice Chancellor ChandrakanthaJeyabalan said the university had decided to provide skill-basedprogramme in collaboration with the National Skill Developmentcouncil (NSDC).
"We are not experts in the subjects, but we have aligned withthe NSDC to prepare the curriculum. We will be offering 18 coursesfrom the current year", she said.

Age no bar for organ donationWhen it comes to organ donation, age is no bar. There
have been instances of people aged over 70 years who havedonated organs. As of July 31, 3722 organs had been har-vested, including skin, corneas, heart valves and blood vessels.
Organs such as kidney, corneas, heart, lung, valves,lever and skin are harvested for every sick patients. Thoughorgans are given to those in a similar age group, doctorssay it all depends on how well they are preserved.
‘Organs from older persons are given to older patients.We give it to older patients as after the transplant their lifeis extended by 10 years’ says Sunil Shroff, urologist andmanaging trustee of Mohan foundation.
The oldest organ donor in India was an 88 year oldman, he recalls, chairman of Sir Ganga Ram hospital, theorgans were donated in 2012. His liver was transplantedto a 35 year old person. Three years later, all those whoreceived his organs are doing fine, says surgicalgasteroenterologist S.Surendran, who performed the firstliver transplant in the government in Stanley Hospital. Sixmonths a ago, an 80 year old person’s liver was transplantedto a 55 year old patient at MIOT Hospital, he adds.
Plastic surgeon G.Balakrishnan, who established the firstsjin bank in the State, says rigid protocals are observed whileharvesting skin. While internal organs are harvested frombrain-dead patients, in the case of carneas and skin, har-vesting is done after death. As with corneas, skin can beharvested from any dead persons within six hours of death.
