UTP in Top 200 QS RankingTo be globally recognised for any accomplishment is indeed something to be proud of and to shout about. A leader has a tall order to inspire the people around them to push themselves - and, in turn, the institution - to greatness. To do this, he must lead by example. Good leadership takes strength of character and a firm commitment to do the things he says, when he says it.

There are many such leaders who lead by example. The University’s Vice Chancellor Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) for his contributions in the engineering and computer sciences disciplines. With the election of Datuk Abdul Rahim, the University now has three ASM fellows serving at UTP, the others being Prof Dr Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani (Engineering Sciences) and Prof Dr Norani Muti Mohamed (Mathematical and Physical Sciences). ASM is a statutory body set up to pursue, encourage and enhance excellence in science, engineering and technology for the benefit of mankind.

With three illustrative leaders at the helm of the management and research centresfor excellence, the University has raised the bar for its academic and faculty members to push the boundaries to achieve the best, not only for themselves but also for the University and eventually the country.

The University also celebrates being the top Malaysia’s private University when it secured a position within the top 200 universities in Asia as recognised by the QS University Ranking: Asia for the year 2014. Read all about how UTP secured the position ahead of its 2015 target date.

In this edition Professor Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani also shared the challenges of rising to the current QS World ranking and the University’s plan beyond this achievement.

The Campus continues to buzz with hives of activities. The 3rd World Engineering, Science and Technology Congress (ESTCON2014) attracted new innovations and ideas through the much awaiting pitching session and gathered more than 1,000 experts from over 40 countries featuring 20 parallel sessions and more than 1500 research and industry papers from around the world. The students organised Sector Focused Career Fair: Technology, Education And Career, an event co-hosted by Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). The event is unique for it focuses on engineering, oil, gas and energy sector, which, was joined by 63 companies within the sectors.

In one recent Globoforce survey, 39% of employees had reported that they do not feel appreciated at work. Even more eye-opening, 69% say they would work harder if they felt their efforts were better recognised. And 78% said being recognised motivates them in their job. At UTP, the annual Quality Day presented the stage for open appreciation to staff and academic faculty members who have shown tremendous zeal and commitment in their respective roles and functions. 16 categories of awards were given out in recognition and appreciation to 46 individuals and six teams. A total of 81 staff members were also given long-service awards.

Dear readers, stay tune for more excitement in our next Quarter.

Datuk,You make us proud!

UTP Vice Chancellor, YBhg Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hj Hashim, FASc, was among the latest of the country’s academics elected as Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) during the recent Academy’s 19th Annual General Meeting. He is elected in the discipline of Engineering & Computer Sciences.

ASM is a statutory government body formed by the government with a challenging mission that is to pursue, encourage and enhance excellence in Science, Engineering and Technology in support of the development of the nation and for the benefit of mankind. Over the years, the Academy has provided, among others, strategic advice to the nation on the development and policies of Science, Technology and

Innovation initiatives to support the nation building. The Fellows of the Academy are drawn from eminent Malaysian scientists, engineering and technologist in many fields. A Fellow is appointed based on his/her achievements which are considered of extraordinary value.

Currently, there are three (3) ASM fellows serving the university namely Prof Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil b Mohamad Hani (Engineering Sciences), Prof Dr Norani Muti bt Mohamed (Mathematical and Physical Sciences) and YBhg Datuk Abdul Rahim.

The University community would like to congratulate YBhg Datuk Ir Dr Abdul Rahim Hj Hashim on his appointment.

UTP in Top 200 QS RankingTestimony of continued and progressive excellence

“This placement within the top 200 elite Asian institutes of higher learning bears witness and testimony to UTP’s growing record of awards in recognition of its continuous journey towards excellence. “In 2012, the university was placed at number 227, moving up to number 204 in 2013. Being in the top 200 in 2014 comes a year ahead of its 2015 target date.” said Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim.

The QS University Rankings: Asia, published since 2009, provides a comparison and overview of the top 300 universities in the Asian region; and to be placed within the top 200 in the world’s most dynamic and rapidly developing regions is no mean feat. The methodology for ranking the Asian universities is similar to that used for the QS World University Rankings with the addition of some indicators and adapted weightings. The set of criteria applied was developed in consultation with regional experts and stakeholders and were formulated to best reflect the key components, strengths and priorities of the Asian universities.

The universities were ranked on nine key performance indicators which include academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty : student ratio, citations per paper, papers per faculty proportion of international faculty, proportion of international students, proportion of inbound exchange students and proportion of outbound exchange students. The indicators are weighted and assessed using data from global surveys amongst the international academic community and employers wherever applicable, and from data of publications and citations for research papers from the Scopus database to reflect the research productivity of the university.

The internationalisation of the university in terms of student enrolment and faculty members is also a consideration. The Asian ranking also includes the proportion of inbound and outbound exchange students which offer additional insights into the internationalisation of the Asian universities. These two indicators, which incidentally are not used in the global ranking, offer additional insight and assess the size of the institutions’ student exchange programme as a measure of its international collaboration in the world of academia.

Beyond Top 200 under the QS World University Rankings

Professor Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani is the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. He is an accomplished researcher and his research interests include image processing and computer vision for biomedical and inspection systems. Currently he leads the University’s Centre for Intelligent Signal & Imaging Research (CISIR). At national level, Professor Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil is a Fellow with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).

In this interview Professor Fadzil shared the importance of having a purposeful and structured plan in making the quantum leap for excellence.

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) is ranked in the top 200 in Chemical Engineering under the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014. The recognition provides the springboard for the University to benchmark itself amongst the best international universities while also placing it in good stead when compared with other international institutions. The recognition also enhances the University’s international brand reputation.

The annual QS world university rankings by subject are a comprehensive guide to the world’s top universities in a range of popular subject areas. British Quacquarelli Symonds publishes the rankings, which was initially in an association with Times Higher Education. QS World University Rankings is one of the three most influential and widely observed international rankings and is referred to, for admissions from the international sector of students. The ranking system takes into account research quality, graduate employment, student staff ratios, teaching standards, international collaborations and a number of other factors. However, the biggest single factor in QS rankings is academic reputation, which is calculated by surveying more than 60,000 academics and graduate employers around the world about their opinion on merits of their institution other than where they belong. newly released QS University Rankings form one of the few global rankings of universities.

Interestingly, the recognition comes six years ahead of the targeted schedule for UTP.

Professor Fadzil said that in 2008, the University set up an organisational Transformation Plan by identifying Chemical Engineering & Mechanical Engineering programmes to be in the top 200 in the World University rankings by 2020 and UTP to be in the top 200 Asia University rankings by 2015.

He said though the QS rankings are broadly based and include measurements of student numbers, diversity of faculty and students, etc, they are significantly influenced by an opinion poll of faculty and other researchers around the world that focuses on what they know about research strengths of other institutions. “In my view it is more important to look at the trends, develop deep understanding of the methodology used to create the ranking and identify aspects and details for assessment with respect to UTP’s standing and work towards achieving the points where UTP has the advantage and leverage.” He further added that each university has different strengths to offer, creating difficulties to make fair comparisons. It was really a challenge for a private University like UTP to compete with the more established public universities.

In terms of strategy, the University did not consciously bother with the competitions and the race to check its position vis-à-vis other institutions. Instead, UTP has made concerted efforts by reviewing its own strength and identifying the ranking key criteria of the assessment and work diligently to achieve the required criteria. For example, student exchange programme is being allocated 5% in the assessment. “In order to gain maximum points, we structured our student exchange programme by recording the stipulated number of participation which included external students joining UTP’s programmes. If we have gaps, we immediately address the shortcoming”, said Professor Fadzil. He also added that the team focused their efforts on areas that are within their tight control. However, in the case of measuring reputation and perception, the variance is not within their sphere of control. In these instances, collaborations and partnership worked to the University’s advantage because third party endorsement did contribute to the percentile in perception measurement.

Professor Fadzil takes pride in sharing that it is quite impressive for a 17 years old university to gain a position amongst top 200 universities in Asia. He said that this achievement reflects the University’s purposeful and visionary leadership in laying down solid foundation and meticulous but comprehensive road map to realising its vision and mission. “We are smaller in size, but we know what we want, when we want it and how to go about achieving it. We

are focused in our planning and diligent in the implementation. We welcome feedback and input. We thrive on audits - both internally and externally because audits provide us with objective indicators whether or not we are doing things right and not derailing from our tracks. We build on strengths and we address the gaps.”

When asked what would be the challenge now that UTP has already achieved being positioned in international rankings system earlier than projected, Professor Fadzil said that the bar now has been raised. The target now would be to position the University amongst the top 100. On top of that UTP long term vision is to be internationally recognised as a partner of choice for industries and a respected member of scientific communities.

“We can use the same model as before to achieve the rankings, but we have to triple our efforts. Our resources remain the same but the productivity has to increase tenfold. We can acquire or “buy” expertise. It would be better to collaborate or “borrow” and build capabilities as this is more sustainable in a longer term.” To attain the long term vision, we have to restrategise with new initiatives and targets.

He concluded the interview by a positive note. “There is a saying ‘What got you here, will not get you there’. There are a lot of soul-searching and re-engineering of attitude and behavior that need to be done. But such is not impossible”.

Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini was also one of the keynote speakers who delivered his address titled “Demand-Driven Entrepreneurial Academic Ecosystem New Academia”.

The second keynote titled “The Path to a Sustainable Energy Future” was delivered by Prof Dr Paul Komor, the Energy Education Director at the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI), University of Colorado Boulder, USA. He shared in the Nobel Peace Prize awarded in 2007 to Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Organised since 2010, ESTCON has emphasised the importance of innovation, creativity and commercialisation. Continuing with this tradition, ESTCON2014 has introduced a new section called Innovation Pitching.

“The innovation pitching is designed to directly connect researchers and inventors to potential investors and business partners. In addition, it will create opportunities that will enable the university to increase revenue and create new jobs,” said Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, Vice Chancellor of UTP.

“The Innovation Pitching allowed participants from different categories to showcase and present their innovation products. Not only will it provide a platform for the university’s community to present their work, successful research and innovations will

also gain reputable recognitions from external parties through the participation in this exhibition,” said Dr. Zulkifli Mohamed Hashim, Deputy Secretary General (Science) of Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), who represented YB Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, Deputy MOSTI Minister for the closing ceremony on 5 June 2014.

“ESTCON2014’s Innovation Pitching is in line with MOSTI’s commercialisation year with the theme “Science, Technology and Innovation for Wealth Creation”. This initiative provides opportunities to technopreneurs to commercialise their R&D products while addressing key issues of commercialisation,” added Dr. Zulkifli.

Dr Zulkifli also presented the best papers and best presenters award for participants of ESTCON2014.

A total of 26 innovation pitches were carried out during the congress, with nine innovations are now in discussions with AIM and five with KPerak.

The main sponsors of the congress were PETRONAS and Exxon Mobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc as Diamond sponsors, while Dialog Group Berhad as the Gold sponsor.

In conjunction with ESTCON2014, UTP has also worked on a special Carbon Offset Project by planting 121 trees at the ESTCON Park, UTP campus. To reduce carbon footprint in organising ESTCON2014, UTP has focused on reducing and reworking strategies to minimise carbon dioxide in areas such as air travel, paper usage and electricity consumption. The trees were sponsored by the university’s staff and student. The sponsorship received was also channelled to YUTP Bursary Fund to provide a financial aid for UTP students of RM300,000 per semester.

The next ESTCON is scheduled to be held in 2016.

A Sector Focused Career Fair - Technology, Education and Career (TEC) 2014Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) hosted its Sector Focused Career Fair: Technology, Education and Career (SFCFTEC) focusing on engineering, oil, gas and energy. The event, officiated by Senator Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, saw 63 companies from the engineering, oil, gas and energy sector taking part in the event.

Top employers including SapuraKencana Petroleum Berhad, PETRONAS, Shell, Murphy Oil, Schlumberger, Petra Energy, SBM Offshore, Talisman and Scomi Oil Tools ran booths and answered questions about their businesses and how interested participants can start to work for them. Participants can also explore internship opportunities through engagement sessions with the participating companies.

“Malaysia has made great strides in its journey to transform into a developed high income nation by 2020. To enable us to successfully reach this goal requires the right quantity and quality of talent. The Government is committed towards enhancing the availability of talent, particularly by nurturing local Malaysian talent in this industry”, said Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid.

“The foundation of any productive, high-income economy lies in a globally competitive, creative and innovative workforce. To achieve this, an integrated approach to nurture and retain first-world talents needs to be instituted. The ability to innovate is critical to succeed in a globalised economy, and this spirit of innovation can only be cultivated if our youth are equipped with the right skills and technology know-how. We need to ensure our graduates are not only equipped with industry-relevant skills, but also possess the ability to think critically and to solve problems creatively,” he added.

In 2012, TalentCorp commissioned Pricewaterhouse Coopers

to conduct a study on the talent demand supply dynamics and the talent priorities and preferences of Malaysian oil and gas players.

“The same report also found UTP graduates are widely recognised within the oil and gas sector as being well-rounded individuals with good technical and soft skills. Companies also shared that the seven-month internshipprogramme conducted by UTP provided graduates a strong exposure to the expectations and needs of oil and gas employers and therefore helped them make a smooth transition into the workforce,” Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid said.

Forty-five student leaders were among 250 students who took part in an engagement session with Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid.

SFCFTEC also organised a roundtable discussion that brought together over 60 delegates from the oil and gas industry to discuss possible areas of improvement for graduates in meeting industry requirements.

Among the activities featured was the Future Scientist Eco-Challenge 2014, designed to educate and inspire young high school students to overcome challenges in tackling energy, water and food issues. Other activities such as the Innovation City Challenge explored entrepreneurship and communications skills among the participants.

The fairs are held at higher learning institutions through-out the year and are a TalentCorp initiative to increase awareness of new career opportunities for new talents, undergraduates and graduates. They also provide an ideal platform for companies and employers to scout for potential talent in their relevant sectors.

The event is open to the public and admission is free.
