TATTVAS OF JAINISM

Jain metaphysics is based on seven (sometimes nine, with subcategories) truths or fundamental principles also known as tattva or navatattva, which are an attempt to explain the nature and solution to the human

predicament. The first two are the two ontological categories of the soul jīva and the non-soul ajīva, namely the axiom that they exist. The third truth is that through the interaction, called yoga, between the two

substances, soul and non-soul, karmic matter flows into the soul (āsrava), clings to it, becomes converted into karma and the fourth truth acts as a factor of bondage (bandha), restricting the manifestation of the

consciousness intrinsic to it. The fifth truth states that a stoppage (saṃvara) of new karma is possible

through asceticism through practice of right conduct, faith and knowledge. An intensification of asceticism burns up the existing karma – this sixth truth is expressed by the word nirjarā. The final truth is that when

the soul is freed from the influence of karma, it reaches the goal of Jaina teaching, which is liberation or

mokṣa. Some authors add two additional categories: the meritorious and demeritorious acts related to karma

(puṇya and pāpa). These nine categories of cardinal truth, called navatattva, form the basis of entire Jain

metaphysics. The knowledge of these reals is essential for the liberation of the soul.

Jīva

Jainism believes that the souls (jīva) exist as a reality, having a separate existence from the

body that houses it. Jīva is characterised by cetana(consciousness)

and upayoga (knowledge and perception). Though the soul experiences both birth and death,

it is neither really destroyed nor created. Decay and origin refer respectively to the

disappearing of one state of soul and appearance of another state, these being merely the

modes of the soul.

Ajīva

Ajīva are the five non-living substances that make up the universe along with the jīva. They are:

� Pudgala (Matter) –Matter is classified as solid, liquid, gaseous, energy, fine Karmic materials and extra-fine matter

or ultimate particles. Paramānu or ultimate particles are considered the basic building block of all matter. One of

the qualities of the Paramānu and Pudgala is that of permanence and indestructibility. It combines and changes

its modes but its basic qualities remain the same. According to Jainism, it cannot be created nor destroyed.

� Dharma-tattva (Medium of Motion) and Adharma-tattva (Medium of rest) –

They are also known as Dharmāstikāya and Adharmāstikāya. They are

unique to Jain thought depicting the principles of motion and rest. They are

said to pervade the entire universe. Dharma-tattva and adharma-tattva are

by themselves not motion or rest but mediate motion and rest in other

bodies. Without dharmāstikāya motion is not possible and

withoutadharmāstikāya rest is not possible in the universe.

� Ākāśa (Space) – Space is a substance that accommodates souls, matter,

the principle of motion, the principle of rest, and time. It is all-pervading,

infinite and made of infinite space-points.

� Kāla (Time) – Time is a real entity according to Jainism and all activities, changes or modifications can be

achieved only through time. In Jainism, the time is likened to a wheel with twelve spokes divided into descending

and ascending halves with six stages, each of immense duration estimated at billions of sagaropama or ocean

years. According to Jains, sorrow increases at each progressive descending stage and happiness and bliss

increase in each progressive ascending stage.

Āsrava

The āsrava is the influx of karmas. It occurs when the karmic particles are attracted to the soul on account of

vibrations created by activities of mind, speech and body. Tattvārthasūtra, 6:1–2 states: "The activities of body,

speech and mind is called yoga. This three-fold action results in āsrava or influx of karma."

Bandha

The karmas have effect only when they are bound to the consciousness. This binding of the karma to the

consciousness is called bandha. However, theyoga or the activities alone do not produce bondage. Out of the many

causes of bondage, passion is considered as the main cause of bondage. The karmas are literally bound on account

of the stickiness of the soul due to existence of various passions or mental dispositions.

Pāpa and Punya

In many texts punya or spiritual merit and papa or spiritual demerit are counted among the fundamental reals. But

in Tattvārthasūtra the number of tattvasis seven because both punya and papa are included in āsrava or bandha.

Both punya and papa are of two types — dravya type (physical type) and abhava type (mental type).

Saṃvara

Saṃvara is stoppage of karma. The first step to emancipation or the realization of the self is

to see that all channels through which karma has been flowing into the soul have been

stopped, so that no additional karma can accumulate. This is referred to as the stoppage of

the inflow of karma (saṃvara). There are two kinds of saṃvara: that which is concerned with

mental life (bhava-saṃvara), and that which refers to the removal of karmic particles

(dravya- saṃvara). This stoppage is possible by self-control and freedom from attachment.

The practice of vows, carefulness, self-control, observance of ten kinds of dharma, mation,

and the removal of the various obstacles, such as hunger, thirst, and passion stops the

inflow of karma and protect the soul from the impurities of fresh karma.

Nirjarā

Nirjarā is the shedding or destruction of karmas that has already accumulated. Nirjarā is of two types: the psychic

aspect of the removal of karma (bhāva-nirjarā) and destruction of the particles of karma (dravya-nirjarā). Karma may

exhaust itself in its natural course when its fruits are completely exhausted. In this, no effort is required. The remaining

karma has to be removed by means of penance (avipaka-nirjarā). The soul is like a mirror which looks dim when the

dust of karma is deposited on its surface. When karma is removed by destruction, the soul shines in its pure and

transcendent form. It then attains the goal of mokṣa.

Mokṣa

Mokṣa means liberation, salvation or emancipation of soul. It is a blissful

state of existence of a soul, completely free from the karmic bondage, free

from samsara, the cycle of birth and death. A liberated soul is said to have

attained its true and pristine nature of infinite bliss, infinite knowledge and

infinite perception. Such a soul is called siddha or paramatman and

considered as supreme soul or God. In Jainism, it is the highest and the

noblest objective that a soul should strive to achieve. It fact, it is the only

objective that a person should have; other objectives are contrary to the

true nature of soul. With right faith, knowledge and efforts all souls can

attain this state. That is why, Jainism is known as mokṣamārga or the “path to liberation”.

HOW TO WRITE A WINNING RESUME

Resume writing can seem like an intimidating task, but it’s actually easier than you think. Your resume only

has one job to do: It must pique the interest of your potential employer. That’s it. It doesn’t have to tell your

life story and it doesn’t have to answer every question a potential employer might have.

Here's How: Start by researching the companies that interest you. Next, read publications or websites directly related to

When your resume is finished, read it over carefully and make sure that it properly demonstrates

your value as an employee. If so, you have written an effective invitation to employers. All you need to

HOW TO MAKE A VASE OUT OF A PLASTIC BOTTLE

1. Mark and cut the smooth middle portion of the

bottle to give an even edge approx 7.5 to 8 cm

(3") above where you want the fluted rim to be.

2. Measure and make straight, evenly spaced cuts

all the way around the bottle. Cut the segments

in half and then cut each of those in half to

make even, thin strips.

3. Carefully press and fold all the strips outward to make a

level edge all the way around.

4. Press the bottle upside down on a flat surface

to ensure an even edge.

5. Weave the tip of a strip over the next one and

under the next two. Fold and crease it so that

the tip is at the place shown here by the arrow.


6. Fold and crease the next one the same way, but weave this

one over two and under one.

7. Fold the third strip and weave the same as the

first one.

8. Continue around in this pattern until the last

three and tuck each one under the next until

woven in completely.

The Elder Scrolls V:

Skyrim - Dawnguard Review

It’s not surprising to see Bethesda maintaining its

tradition of following up games filled to the brim with

content with, well, even more content. The Elder

Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dawnguard isn’t a new game

nine months after the release of the superb Skyrim;

rather, the creators of the series thought it was apt

to release the first expansion pack for the game

almost a year later. The first thing you notice on

firing up Dawnguard is how well-integrated the

events of this quest line are with the rest of the

game. Unlike the previous Elder Scrolls title,

Oblivion, or even Fallout 3, where DLC and

expansion packs would have their events taking

place in confined, specially created locales, the

scenarios you face here take place across the land

of Skyrim.

You’ll be visiting a slew of both new and old places

across the world map. Be it the cities of Markarth

and Solitude you've

already explored in

the original Skyrim,

or the inherent

creepy residence of

souls and the

undead that is the Soul Cairn, you’ll find an

interesting variety of places to visit.

Dawnguard’s main storyline has you right in the

middle of an impending war between a powerful,

ancient race of vampires and the Dawnguard – a

group of highly-trained vampire hunters. As soon as

you install it, you realise that the game’s wealth of

non-playable characters start murmuring about an

increase in deaths at the hands of vampires or the

reformation of a legendary group of vampire killers.

Before you know it, you’ll find vampires and their

thralls attacking towns and the Dawnguard openly

looking for recruits. It’s smartly done and does a

great job of ensuring you deviate from your current

adventure to check out what’s going on. Very early

on, you’re forced to choose your allegiance between

the two factions. On doing so, you’d expect two

radically different chain of events to be put into

motion. However, in our playthrough, we noticed

that there were a lot of quests that were similar for

both factions.

Speaking of quests, there’s nothing that you haven’t

already played. From exploring long-forgotten ruins

to fighting dragons, you’ve done all of it in the base

game itself. There isn’t anything you have not

already experienced, which makes this expansion

feel a lot more familiar than it should.

The big draw is the fact that this expansion pack lets

you play as a vampire lord. This character class is a

heady mix of ferocious melee combat and sadistic

spell casting. Well, at least in theory. In reality, when

you decide to

transform into a

vampire lord, the

camera decides to go

into third person view.

This becomes highly

irritating, especially if you’ve burned in a hundred

odd hours or so in Skyrim like some of us have.

Furthermore, you cannot go through most corridors

or doors, and neither can you open treasure chests,

making this mode feel stunted in spite of morphing

into an absolute, lumbering beast with monstrous

capabilities. The end result is that it ends up feeling

clunky, slow and not quite enjoyable as it should

be.

You do get your hands on some interesting perks,

though, such as being able to teleport, transform

into the mist or summon gargoyles. Aside from this,

the already-existing werewolf class gets some new

skills as well, and while they’re nice to have, they

don’t do much to take the experience farther.

It's a good thing then you’re not forced into

becoming a

creature of the

night.

However, it’s

not as if the

alternative is

any better.

You see, playing the role of one of the elite

Dawnguard only gives you access to the crossbow,

which is just a souped up bow from the base game,

besides being able to hire armoured trolls to do your

bidding in the war against vampirism. Aside from

these, there isn’t much else and there aren't many

incentives in the way of perks or character classes

to play as a vampire hunter. Having said that,

joining the Dawnguard ensures an experience that’s

as close to the base game you’ve already wasted

lots of time on with nothing new or different. This

makes it the less attractive option of the two.

After launching

the Sony Xperia

S earlier this year, Sony

upped the ante by

recently introducing its

elder cousin, the Xperia

ion. Despite having

only a dual-core CPU,

the phone is priced at

Rs 37,000, pitting it

against the likes of quad-core behemoths such

asLG's Optimus 4X HD, the HTC One

X, and Samsung's GALAXY S III. Whether it will

emerge unscathed from this uphill battle remains to be seen. For now, here are my first impressions

of the product, based on a brief hands-on experience.

The Xperia ion features a 1.5 GHz dual-core

processor. It has a large 4.6" TFT LCD display, which is fairly bright. The screen's pixel

dimensions are 720x1280, resulting in a pixel

density of around 320 ppi (the iPhone 4S has 326

ppi). The onscreen icons and text are very sharp.

Holding the lightweight phone feels good, but it

could have done with a textured back panel for a

better grip (and fewer fingerprint smudges).

Overall, the build quality is fairly decent. Here's

On the software front, it features Android 4.0

(ICS) with an interface that operates very

smoothly. It has a 12 mp camera, along with a

dedicated camera button. Unfortunately, it's

slightly hard to press. The time between

successive shots is very low, while the resulting

photographs are fairly decent under good lighting

conditions. However, under low light, a lot of

noise creeps into the images. Keep your eyes

peeled for a full review very soon. In the

MOVIE REVIEW – OMG – OH MY GOD (RELEASED 28TH

SEP 2012)

Oh My God (OMG) is based on a Gujarati play titled "Kanji Virrudh Kanji" written by Bhavesh Mandalia. Written by Bhavesh Mandalia & Umesh Shukla, Oh My God (OMG) is produced by Akshay Kumar who also has a crucial role in the movie. Paresh Rawal is back in a substantial role in OMG which released this past Friday. The movie’s plot is as follows.

Kanji Bhai is a Gujarati businessman in Mumbai, who doesn’t believe in God. His disbelief becomes stronger when a freak earthquake destroys only his shop while the others are safe. The insurance company refuses to pay him damages saying it is an ‘Act of God’. Kanji becomes agitated at this and decides to throw a case against God himself in the court and claims damages from God. The entire state is polarized by his decision to challenge God and what follows is a legal drama as Kanji has to take on the influential Godmen and priests in the society.

Whether Kanji finally accepts the existence of God and does he positively influence the public which increasingly starts looking at him as a messiah?

The movie is a gutsy and daring attempt to demystify the concept of God. There are many brave attacks on the culture of Godmen, the practice of idol worship, the crores of money collected at temples and they even go as far to say that religion is becoming a big business in the country. The movie states all this with adequate doses of drama and entertainment in the form of razor-sharp dialogues.

The performances are top notch, led by Paresh Rawal as Kanji. He shoulders the movie throughout. His caliber is well known anyway. Mithun Chakraborty as the effeminate Godman must be a really plucky actor to pull this role off with ease. He doesn’t overdo his reactions and his antics bring a chuckle for sure. Akshay Kumar has a very likable cameo as Lord Krishna. The way he bonds with Kanji in his house is beautiful. The bike which he uses is a killer though his intro stunts on the bike are poorly executed thanks to the tacky graphics.

Govind Namdeo is another aggressive Godman and he overdoes his part. Kanji’s family has been well enacted by the support characters and so is his neighbor. Om Puri is dignified as the lawyer while Prabhu Deva and Sonakshi Sinha send the feet tapping wildly in their ‘Go Govinda’ special number.

All the courtroom scenes are gripping and the dialogues make these episodes really hard-hitting. The drama towards the end goes overboard but the movie’s intentions and the nice ending which gives out a valid message, brings the movie back on track.

The cinematography and the music are pretty basic and just serve the purpose of the movie which is primarily to educate the audience without getting preachy.

To sum up, OMG is a worthy watch for the atheists as well as the believers. It makes some valid points on the concept of God and doesn’t beat around the bush. The makers have the guts to call a spade a spade and what we get is a no holds barred debate on religion and the masses’ attitude towards the same.

Verdict: OMG is a thought provoking and hard hitting take on the enigma that is God. Go for it!


MOVIE PREVIEW : ENGLISH VINGLISH

Gauri Shinde who is the director of ENGLISH VINGLISH would not have dreamt when she signed Sridevi as the

lead star that the film would get a thunderous applause going on for ten minutes at the Toronto International Festival,

and it was a standing ovation. Well, the subject chosen by

Gauri Shinde is indeed such that it has been lapped by the

audience around the world and the time is just round the

corner where it should be lapped in India as well when it

releases in the cinema halls this Friday 5th

Oct 2012.

Well, it sort of underlines the maxim 'Mulgee sikhlee

pragati jhaali'- the slogan which has been at the center

stage propagated by the government of Maharashtra to

ensure that a girl gets education, as when a girl gets

educated it has a multiplier effect of a family getting

educated. Well, the reader may wonder what is the connection of ENGLISH VINGLISH with Mulgi shikli Pragatai

jhaali?

The binding chord is a struggle that a woman has with a language and how she surmounts all the problems and come

out in flying colors. ENGLISH VINGLISH underlines the struggle of Sridevi to learn a language - English , which she

otherwise is not conversant with, and how she is determined to learn the language and tell the world that when a

woman decides that she has to attain something, nothing can deter her from attaining it.

So in that context, the Mulgi- Sridevi moves mountains to learn the English language

and interprets the process of learning in her own way and ensures that she is on the path

to progress as she has mastered the language which is the first stepping stone to make a

mark in USA. Sridevi is instructed to break long words into two to learn them, so she is

advised to learn Manhattan by breaking into two- man and hattan. In the same way she

breaks the word judgmental into two, judge and mental.

ENGLISH VINGLISH operates at the other level as well, the craze in the Indian families of learning English so we

have funny situations where to demonstrate that one knows English the communication is peppered with words in

such a way that it creates hilarious situations, like - English mein talk karo. The character played by Sridevi in the film

is forced to learn English if she has to earn respect of her family and this is an existentialist dilemma that ladies face in

the families that they are married to.

But with the changing times, the women have also started rising to the challenge and ENGLISH VINGLISH indeed

would go a long way in emerging as a source of inspiration for the women in India and abroad not to be cowed down

by any situation but fight it out to emerge the winner.
