" I was a sailor once. I was part of the Navy, and the Navy will always be part of me."
The sprite of the little ships reflects itself in that of it’s crews. Destroyermen are a bit apart from the rest of our man-of-war men. On the small ships they have to
do without many of the comforts the crews of carriers, battleships, and even cruisers enjoy. They live in cramped quarters. There is no canteen or ships
service booth where a man might get a coke, or an ice cream. Yet the destroyerman, through he beefs about it all, and swears it’s a dog’s life, in his
innermost heart glories in the hardships his particular trade imposes on him. He is inclined to look down on the men from the "Big Ships;" as softies. His walk is a "destroyer roll", .His hat sits precariously on one eyebrow. He is the bane of the Shore Patrol...He will abuse his ship roundly as the most uncomfortable,
leakingest, buckingest crate that ever went to sea. But let somebody else pass unfavorable comments on her and he’s ready to defend her honor at the drop of a hat. A USS Borie survivor said it best after being offered a transfer to a bigger
ship "Me? No thanks. On a destroyer you know everybody with there good sides and there faults. And everybody knows you. You can’t sham on a DD..
You gotta be a sailor,mister."---from destroyers in action by Richard A Shafter--

USS Walke DD-723 spent her last year of active service operating along the west coast. On 30 November 1970, she was decommissioned at the Puget
Sound Naval Shipyard and was berthed with the Columbia River Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet, until 1974. On 1 February 1974, her name was struck from the Navy list. She was sold to General Metals, of Tacoma, Wash., on
16 April 1975 for scrapping.
Walke (DD-723) earned six battle stars during World War II, four battle stars in the Korean conflict, and seven battle stars for Vietnam

January 6 - 1945 -Aircraft from a fast carrier task force, under Vice Admiral McCain commence a 1-day attack on Japanese aircraft and airfield facilities in the Luzon area. The high-speed minesweeper USS Hovey (DMS-11) is sunk by an aircraft torpedo in the Luzon area. The high-speed minesweeper USS Long (DMS-12) is sunk by suicide plane in the Philippines. The battleships USS New Mexico (BB-40) and USS California (BB-44), the heavy cruisers USS Louisville (CA-28) and USS Minneapolis (CA-36), the light cruiser USS Columbia (C-56), the destroyers USS Newcomb (DD-586), USS Richard P. Leary (DD-664), USS Allen M. Sumner (DD-692), USS
Walke (DD-723), USS O'Brien (DD-725) and USS Lowry (DD-770), high-speed minesweeper USS Southard (DMS-10) and high-speed transport USS Brooks (APD-10) are damaged by suicide plane in the Luzon area (DD-586 and DD-770 also damaged by accidental US naval gunfire.)
During the assault on Mindoro on 15 December, she turned her guns on the grounded Japanese destroyer WAKABA and drove off several enemy planes. On 2 January 1945, she was underway for the invasion of Luzon where she covered minesweepers clearing the way into the Lingayen Gulf. There, on 6 January, four kamikazes dove on her, approaching low over the water. She succeeded in splashing the first two attackers, but the third broke through and, though hit several times, managed to crash into WALKE’s bridge. The destroyer lost all communications, radars, gyro repeaters, and electricity throughout the superstructure and suffered extensive damage to the bridge itself as well as to her gun and torpedo directors. The plane’s 250-pound bomb didn’t explode but passed completely through the ship near the combat information center.
Two minutes after the first kamikaze hit, the last of the four came in on the destroyer’s starboard quarter. Her 5-inch number-3 gun and starboard 40- and 20-mm guns brought the plane down in flames before it could hit the ship. Though mortally wounded, her captain, Cdr. George F. Davis, continued to conn his ship until the fires were under control and his ship was out of danger. He died several hours later and posthumously received a Medal of Honor. He was further honored with a new destroyer, DD-937, bearing his name.
USS WALKE at Mare Island Shipyard February 6 1945 showing battle damage from January Kamikaze attack, WALKE left Mare Island April 4
1945 and returned to duty.
LITTLE KNOWN WALKE HISTORYIn March 1959 USS WALKE and the rest of the division departed Long Beach for special ops off the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The US was trying various methods of gathering intelligence data involved in photographing areas of interest in Russia. Then the vehicle carring the camera would discharge its camera or film over the pacific ocean near Hawaii. As the "package" was parachuted to the ocean Air Force Planes would try to snag it while still in the air. If this failed Walke and other ships in the division were on station to pick up the material when it landed in the ocean...Walke returned to Long Beach July 1959.
Did I ever mention I remember you? I am saddened by the loss of your
website. It was wonderful. It brought back so many younger memories that
had passed from my mind. The pictures, the ships log, the stories and e-mails
from other ship mates. I was proud to be part of your site. I shared it with all my
kids, grandkids and other family members who could not imagine my
history without your site. To me, it was the best site on the web. I don't know why you gave it up but I appreciate the time and effort you put into it. I will miss
it and thankyou for the time we had sharing our memories.
Your ol' shipmate,Jan Lundstrom, SOG3, 59-61, USS Walke
