A t approximately 1915 C!u.een July 1943 wr i t t en orders were recieved from t h e Captain of t h e Yard, E.A.S., Trinidad, B.VV.I., f o r t h e U.S.S. ABBOT t o proceed imnediately a t b e s t speed and pick up t h r ee German survivors on a r a f t vdth sail se t .

With the above i n f o n ~ a t i o n it was estimated t h a t t h e r a f t would be s ighted around 11A5 Queen August 1, 1943 a t Lat i tude w0 26.8' Korth, Longitude 55' 44.2' West, a dis tance of 1+8 mi les froin t he or ig ina l given pos i t ion along t h e 3 0 0 s e t Line.

Not s igh t in f the r a f t a t t i l l s posi t ion, t h e U.S.S. Ali3OT proceeded along t h i s estimated t r a ck l i n e of the r a f t towards i ts o r i g ina l reported pos i t ion , A t approximately 1330 August ls t , t he U.S.S. ABBOT was a t t h i s posi t ion and. changed course t o the southlard t o i nves t i z a t e discolored water. This was believed t o be depth charge exudate.

From t h i s posit.ion a ca re fu l zig-zag search was conducted within t he a r ea 3 0 0 Â ° ( ~ and 281to(~) from t h e 1300 Queen July 31 estimated pos i t ion o r t h e r a f t . The genera l d i r ec t i on of the search was along a l i n e I'rom t h a t pos i t ion 292O(~) .

The wind was b1ov;ir'ir from the north-east a t about force l+, giving us reason t o bel ieve t h a t t h e r e s u l t a n t t r a c k of t h e r a f t would be in t h e a rea ou t l i ned above.

A Navy FBId type ?lane ass i s ted i n the search on t h i s day, searching i n accordance vdth orders received from his base a t Georf-'etov,il with no r e su l t s . Army planes a s s i s t e d during night , wi th no r e su l t s .

On August 2nd, a havy PH; type plane reported a t 0803 .:;ucen t o f u r t h e r assist i n the search.

The plan given the plane ':;as to f i r s t search i n increasing c i r c l e s around t he estiniabed pos i t ion of t he r a f t . Tills produced no r e su l t s . The plane then searched on t he ou ts ide of our search area. A t 1310, t h e plane completed i t s search in this area with no succes& and returned t o i t s base.

The U.S.S. ABBOT continued searching t h e area. A t 022000 August, a dis- patch was received f r m K.O.B., Trinidad, B r i t i s h ',Yest I nd i e s d i rec t ing t he U.S.S. ABBOT t o r e t u r n t o Trinidad i f t h e survivors had not been located by sunset . A t 1227, August 3, 1943, t he U.S.S. ABB3T was moored a t the Naval A i r S t a t i on , Trinidad, B.YV.1.
