What is Web 2.0?

• Phrase coined by Tim O’Reilly in 2004

Web-based services—such as social networking sites,

wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies—that

emphasize online collaboration and sharing among

users..”

-Participatory web

-sites where you can “do stuff”

Internet is a moving target

• We are in a constantly changing environment

• New technologies are readily available to us

• We need to keep a focus on different ways to

reach our communities

It’s not about the technology ….it’s about

how we can use the technology to best

reach out to our community

Developing staff skills

• Staff need to keep up with technology

• Familiarize themselves and be comfortable

using new technology including web 2.0

And….It is only when staff are familiar with new technology can they determine whether they can use it to add value to the library service

The Learning 2.0 program

• An online learning program designed to help staff

explore Web 2.0 applications

• Self paced

• Hands on discovery exercises

• Based on the concept of Lifelong learning

• Encourages exploration and PLAY

Development

• Developed by Helene Blowers to use at PLCMC

• Over 300 participants

• Now being used in other libraries around the world

• Licensed under Creative Commons

The Program

• The 23 discovery exercises are set out on a blog.

• Staff are guided through each exercise via the blog.

• Most exercises include a podcast

• Staff set up their own blog and use it as an online workbook

to comment on each of the 23 exercises

Over the course of 12 weeks, staff were encouraged to partake in “23 things”

Advantages of online learning

• Self paced

• Do as much or as little as you want

• Added links allow the participant to explore further if they wish

• It’s not restricted by a timetable or a venue

It can be accessed 24/7 anywhere via the Internet

Evaluation of the program

• An evaluation form was sent to each participant

who completed the program

• Questions included

– initial reaction to the program,

– the most challenging part of the program,

– the most fun part of the program,

– possible improvements,

– ways web 2.0 applications could be used in the library.

• RSS feeds and mashups to clients

• Podcast tours of the library
