Using Aspen EDR for Rapid and Accurate Exchanger Design An Introduction
Using Aspen EDR for Rapid and Accurate Exchanger DesignAn Introduction
Aspen EDR
Aspen EDR (Exchanger Design & Rating) is an extension of Aspen
Plus and HYSYS for performing heat exchanger sizing from within an
Aspen simulation
Uses standard heat exchanger sizing equations
As part of the Aspen package, it uses Aspen Properties to calculate
all fluid properties and heat transfer coefficients
Equivalent to Pro/II-HTRI extension (which we also use)

Introduction
Aspen EDR
Full exchanger design and specification to match design
requirements, including geometry, pressure drop, vibration analysis
Rate existing equipment by inputting the design geometry – test the
limits of equipment offline
Predict performance where operating data is missing or
instrumentation lacking – fill in the blanks when evaluating a
process
Anticipate maintenance requirements by predicting performance
with different levels of fouling

What we use it for
Benefits
Because it is integrated into a process simulation, heat exchanger
design is completely linked to process design – if you change the
process, you re-design the heat exchangers
Avoids oversimplification of calculations – by using the rigorous
thermodynamic calculations available to Aspen products

Final Thoughts
EDR does not replace quality engineers – it enhances what they can
achieve
Engineers don’t need to spend their hours on time-consuming
calculation and datasheets
Provides a clear, visual tool for rapidly reviewing design options
Instant cost estimation assists decision making
Automatic check for simple design mistakes avoids common pitfalls
that are easily overlooked
