From the Pastor’s Office12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

We are all pretty familiar with the great characters of the Bible. In all their

stories God called them to do a particular work for Him. So many of them

were called to be prophets. The twelve Apostles had their great struggles

learning the way of Apostleship. In the early Church, the first missionaries,

people like Paul, had it tough. Recently I was reading from one of Paul’s

letters. He tells the community at Ephesus that is was time for him to

move on. He was heading for Jerusalem. He knew that in Jerusalem he

would be arrested. This is what he says, “Now, compelled by the Spirit, I

am going to Jerusalem. What will happen to me there I do not know, except

that in one city after another the Holy Spirit has been warning me that

imprisonment and hardships await me. Yet I consider life of no importance

to me, if only I may finish the course and the ministry I received from the

Lord Jesus.” All of us who try to live a spiritual life have to put our trust in

God. The key thing to say is that we must allow ourselves to be compelled

by the Spirit. I can’t live a spiritual life if I won’t allow myself to be compelled

by the Spirit. None of us has supernatural courage. Lots of times we have

no idea what to say. We wonder what the right thing to do and say is. But

if I walk close to God He will guide me. Let me be compelled by the Spirit.

I have always felt sorry for Jeremiah. He will always be known as the reluc-

tant prophet. He had a hard mission. His job was to enter the court of the

King and bellow God’s words at him. The King chose to be deaf. Therefore,

Jeremiah had to shout all the louder. Jeremiah paid a price for his bold

words. “I hear the whisperings of many; Terror on every side.” The thing is

Jeremiah spoke bold challenging words to the King. But once spoken they

cannot be unspoken. How often when we are in a fight with someone we

say, “You take that back!” The words have been spoken. They take on a

life of their own. What ever about the King choosing to be deaf, at least he

knows. From the beginning Jesus warned his followers. If you choose to

follow me then you better carry a cross with you, because they will condemn

you over me. To dare to speak the words of Jesus in public is a dangerous

thing. People will either love you for them or they will set out to destroy

you. Once those words are spoken, there is no taking them back. If I do

speak let my words be inspiring words from God. Let God speak through

me. What’s the worst that can happen? They will crucify me. Seen it. Been

there. Done that.

With love,

Fr. Pat

FAMILY FAITH & GENERATIONS OF FAITH 2020 SUMMER CHALLENGE “CHALLENGE”: Traditionally, Summer Challenge is a

week of fun, faith formation and service for our middle school students. Teams

come together to learn about our Catholic faith and the spirituality of service before

being sent out around Austin to serve. This year, we have to be creative! Summer

Challenge is an important part of who we are at St. Catherine and we're not willing

to let COVID-19 stop us! More than ever we need to help our young people learn

to be part of the common good by putting others before themselves and give their

time, talent and treasures so others might have a better life. The program will

look different this year, that is why we're calling it the 2020 Summer Challenge

CHALLENGE! It will take place the week of July 12. For more information and to

Liturgy

WELCOME TO ORDINARY TIME: The color

green in the church today tells us that as a

church we have returned to what is called

Ordinary Time. Actually here the word

‘ordinary’ does not mean ‘routine’ but ra-

ther ‘counted’ or ‘numbered’ time; these are the weeks of the

church calendar that are not part of the seasons of Advent,

Christmas, Lent or Easter, but are simply numbered through

the 34th week when we conclude the church year with the

Solemnity of Christ the King. Ordinary Time leaves us to the

ongoing challenges of building the Kingdom. We listen to the

Word of God, which continues to beckon to us as Christians to

internalize the teachings of Jesus and to live them out day by

day. Our daily task that is the same one Jesus had: to proclaim

the Good News of God by our lives, words and actions. This is

hardly an ‘ordinary’ mission! And so the prayers of the Mass

ask for the grace and gifts needed to accomplish this work,

and they carry the same message: “Bring forth the Kingdom!”

HELP US KEEP EVERYONE SAFER – ARRIVE EARLY TO MASS!

As more people return to attending Mass in person, the effort

to manage the seating and movement of the congregation

becomes more challenging. At the same time, many of our

volunteers remain unable to serve due to concerns over the

coronavirus. To help us make things go more smoothly and to

help ensure yourself a place in the church:

• Arrive early for Mass.

• Follow the instructions of the Ushers, especially during

Communion and at dismissal at the end of Mass.

IN CELEBRATION OF INDEPENDENCE DAY, our offices

will be closed Fri., July 3 and Mon., July 6. Daily

Masses will be celebrated at Noon.

THE READINGS FOR SUNDAY MASS are available on the parish

website, as well as the text of the Gloria and Creed. Visit the

livestream page and click the button that says ‘Worship Aid.’

When you enter the church, use your smartphone camera and

the QR codes on posters in the Narthex to go directly to the

worship aid page.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING CORNER:

June 20-21, 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, we are encouraged to be fearless in the face

of opposition. We have a responsibility to contribute to the

good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom.

Even when others attempt to thwart our efforts to build up a

just society, we must remember that we are the Lord’s own.

Even as those against us may attempt to destroy our bodies as

we endeavor to develop a just society, we must remember that

because we are the Lord’s own, they will not be able to destroy

our souls. We must continue to trust in God and proclaim our

faith boldly. In life, as in death, we belong to the Lord.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF CENTRAL TEXAS is available to help

during this time of financial stress. They offer financial stability

services to help prevent homelessness and achieve financial

security through case management, education, and emergency

financial assistance. For information, call (512) 651-6100.
