From the Pastor’s Office28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The man came up to Jesus and asked Him, “What must I do to inherit eternal

life?” The man went on to say that he did everything that was required of

him. I have observed everything that was asked of me. He was the good Jew.

What more? Jesus told him to go and sell what he has and give it to the

poor and you will have treasure in Heaven. Then come and follow me. Well,

that is asking a lot of everybody. I am going to paraphrase the first lesson

from Wisdom today. I prefer scepter and throne. I consider my riches to be

everything. I love my priceless gems. I love gold and silver. This conversation

is about surrender. It is about the ways I cling to my attachments. I can’t

live without my stuff. I suspect that we all cling to our stuff because our

parents and our ancestors reminded us of a distant memory about poverty.

Poverty was only a couple of generations away. There was a time when I

had nothing. There was a time when I yearned for gold and silver. So now, I

am not going to give it up for anything. Because I am attached to my gold

and silver I can’t surrender to the Lord. You can have one or the other, but

you can’t have both. We are all the devout man of the Gospel. I profess to

give everything to the Lord, but I also hold back. I hold onto things. I can’t

fully commit to the Lord because Jesus will ask too much of me. I remember

years ago when I was trying to discern my vocation. I found it hard. There

were many discussions at home. I think I drove my mother mad. She tried

to find a middle ground. She suggested that I go and get an education, find

myself a great job, own property and wealth, and then if that didn’t work

for me I could join the seminary. Then, if things didn’t work out for me in

the Seminary I had something to fall back on. That sounded reasonable,

but it wasn’t for me. I realized that if I was going to follow my vocation it

had to be all, full-hearted, giving everything. If I had something to fall back

on that meant that when the going got tough I could just quit and pick up

my life someplace else. The call of God is all or nothing. You can’t be a

disciple of Christ with an insurance policy in the bank. Jesus demands a

wholehearted commitment. I am not saying that is easy, but I am saying

that is how it is. Jesus said about this, “for human beings it is impossible

but not for God. All things are possible for God.” When God calls us He also

gives us the grace to say “yes” to Him. When I fix my gaze upon Heaven, I

don’t see the other distractions. I just see the possibilities. I learn to walk

by faith. In times of trial I turn to God to protect me. In times of joy I offer

my joys to God. In the way that you knit a sweater together, gradually God

and I knit ourselves together. We become one garment.

With love,

Fr. Pat

28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 10, 2021

MASS INTENTIONS

SANCTUARY LAMP & ADORATION CANDLE INTENTIONS

Liturgy

GOSPEL HIGHLIGHT: Barbara Reid, OP, president

of Catholic Theological Union, breaks open our

Sunday Gospel. “Jesus invites the rich man to

step across a threshold, to leave behind the spir-

ituality of his youth, and to take on another spirituality that

abandons all for the sake of love….Abandoning all for the pur-

suit of the one love is not an easy thing to do. In the gospel,

the young man’s many possessions seem an insurmountable

obstacle. For a rich person to enter the realm of God is like a

heavily laden camel struggling to wiggle through a tiny open-

ing with all its cargo intact….It is not impossible for people

with riches to do so but it is exceedingly difficult. As other gos-

pel passages illustrate, it is not having riches that poses an

obstacle: rather, it is what one does with one’s possessions

that is determinative….Total self-surrender to the Divine is the

one thing that brings abundance of life to all.”

(From Give Us This Day: Daily Prayers for Today’s Catholic)

REMINDER: THE “CRY ROOM” IS OPEN DURING MASS IN THE

PARISH CENTER! Parents may bring children to the Café area

(through the door directly across from the church) during all

Masses. The large TV monitor will project a ‘live’ feed of Mass,

and a Eucharistic Minister will bring Communion.

the Sacred Heart Shrine, St. Jude Shrine, St. Joseph

Shrine, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine. Sign up

online to have a Sanctuary Lamp lit for a week in memory of

a loved one or for a special intention. Your name and intention

will be published in the bulletin. The suggested donation is

Community Ministries

RESPECT LIFE MONTH: Every October, we consider more deeply

why every human life is valuable and reflect on how to build a

culture that protects life from conception to natural death. This

is a time we can use to deepen our understanding of why, as

Catholics, we "Respect Life" and what that looks like day-to-day.

We are also in the midst of celebrating the year of St. Joseph.

So, this year, we are looking to the witness of St. Joseph as a

defender of life. He didn't hesitate to follow God's will of faithfully

caring for and protecting Jesus and the Blessed Mother. St.

Joseph's example reminds us that we are also to care for, protect,

and defend the lives of our brothers and sisters. Please visit the

Respect Life table in the narthex for informational flyers.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: To request a shawl for a

friend or family member, call or text Kay Head, (512)

923-2167 or [email protected]. If you would

like to make a donation to this ministry, please bring it

by the office.

CAREGIVING CAFE (ONLINE): This free online support group for

family caregivers to receive information, resources, and solutions

meets twice monthly on Thursdays. The next meeting on Thurs.,

Oct. 14, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. will feature tips on having a care plan

for yourself. To attend, please RSVP to [email protected] or

(512) 301-3560.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION: MONTH 2: I can suck my

thumb now! I am making great progress. I have

already developed all of my external features

and internal organs. My brain started functioning

after six weeks. With an ultrasonic stethoscope,

you can hear my heartbeat. Baby teeth buds

were present at 6 1/2 weeks and I can suck

my thumb and swallow. Thank you for your prayers, Mom is

probably just finding out about me. Pray, pray, pray.
