At that time, organized development and BART were being put through Mission Street and trees were planted on the sidewalks along with other streetscape improvements. Mexican Fan Palms (Washingtonia robusta) and Victorian Box (Pittosporum undulatum) are planted on Mission Street between 15th and 24th streets. At other points along Mission Street, there are a mix of species and planting types. The entire length of Mission Street contains gaps within the tree planting and canopy, leaving the sidewalk feeling bare. Vertical trees like the palms are a great way to create a sense of procession along the street. Vertical trees also frame the corridor creating a landmark for all users. Secondary trees better suited to urban conditions, with a canopy lower to the ground, can provide shade and visual interest to users of the sidewalk.
