Introduction Company History
SpatialiZe was formed in January 2015 out of the vision of its founder, Yusuf Patel, incorporating 20 years of policy and
practical experience in the built environment across both the public and private sectors.
Yusuf is a former Deputy Director-General in national government, former Executive Director of Basil Read (Pty) Ltd and
Managing Director of its Developments Division, former board member of the South African Cities Network (SACN) and
immediate Past President of the South African Planning Institute (SAPI). He continues to serve on the SAPI board, is Vice
President (Southern Africa) of the Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP), committee member SAPOA property
developers forum, and spokesperson of the South African Affordable Residential Developers Association (SAARDA). He is
founder and director of Makopa, which is a family and community based Investment Company with a Foundation that
supports various community development initiatives.
In a short space of time since inception SpatialiZe has already undertaken various support and advisory assignments for
clients in the built environment sector including consulting support to developers operating in the affordable housing
market. SpatialiZe was appointed by Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM) in July 2015 to lead and manage a Strategic
Programmes & Projects Support Unit (SPPSU). This multi-year contract involves overseeing a multi-disciplinary
professional team of Planners, Development Economists, Engineers, Architects, Quantity Surveyors, Marketing and Social
Facilitation specialists. The aim of the project is to support City making through long-range planning, mobilising
infrastructure investment, and improving governance and service delivery systems.
