FirmwareEachIONmeterusesfirmwaretostoreoperatingsoftware.YoucanupgrademostIONdevicestoanewerversionofoperatingsoftwarebysimplyupgradingitsfirmware.
NOTEThe ION6200 meter cannot be upgraded using software. Consult
Schneider Electric if you wish toupgrade this device.
NOTEEnsure that the firmware version you are upgrading to is
compatible with the meter you are planning toupgrade.

General Upgrading Considerations
Using a Laptop Computer to
UpgradeLaptopcomputersgenerallyhavedifferentdefaultpowerpropertiesthandesktopcomputers.Incorrectpoweroptionscanadverselyaffectdeviceupgrading,becausetheconnectionbetweenthelaptopandthedevicemustbemaintainedinordertocompletetheupgradesuccessfully.Ifthelaptopsharddiskshutsdownorthelaptopenterssystemstandbymode,thisconnectionisbrokenandtheupgradeproceduremustberestarted.
Ifyouareupgradingameterusingalaptopcomputer,followtheseguidelines:
Plugthelaptopcomputerintoawalloutlet.Donotrunthelaptoponitsbattery.
Configuretheharddiskssothattheydonotshutdownafteracertainperiodoftime(i.e.settonever).
Turnoffpowersuspension(e.g.systemstandby)andhibernateoptions.
Disableoptionsthatpowerdownthelaptopwhenitisclosed.Thispreventsashutdownifthelaptopisaccidentallyclosed.
Disablethescreensaver;screensaverscanburdentheCPU.

ConnectionThemaximumacceptablebaudrateforupgradingviaModemGateis56.6kps.EnsurethatthebaudrateontheModemGatecommunicationsportandthebaudrateonthemetertobeupgradedaresettothisorlower.

YoucanobtainyourdeviceslatestfirmwareandtemplatefromTechnicalSupport.Savethefilesinthe.../IONSetup/TEMPLATEfolderforeasyaccess.
Upgrading the device firmware and template
1.
OpenIONSetupandselectthedeviceyouwanttoupgradefromthelefthandpane.
2. OpentheSetupAssistantintherighthandpane.
3.
SelecttheTemplatescreenfromthelistofscreensinthelefthandpaneofSetupAssistant.
4. SelecttheFirmwareUpgradetab,thenclicktheUpgradebutton.
Ifyouarepromptedforyourmeterpassword,typeitinthenclickOK.
NOTEIf you want to retain customized meter template settings,
other than those listed in the Template PasteOptions dialogue box
(see Step 7), click on the Save to PC tab and click Save. Save your
template as a.DCF file. Choose this file in Step 6 instead of the
file obtained from Technical Support.

Afterthefirmwaredownloadiscomplete,IONSetupwillattempttoverifythefirmware.Iftheverificationfails,contactTechnicalSupport.
NOTESome meters display a Checking RMP Status message. RMP
stands for Rapid Meter Programming,which downloads the template to
the meter in less than 5 minutes (for meters and firmware that
supportRMP).
Whenyougetamessagethattheupgradeiscomplete,clickExit.

EnterpriseIONEnterprisesoftwareincludesadeviceupgradeutilitynamedDeviceUpgrader,whichyoucanusetoupgrademostIONdevicesandcertainmetercomponents(suchastheION7330Ethernetcard,ION7700Xpresscard,orMGT)inyoursystem.WiththeDeviceUpgradeutility,youcanupgradethefirmwareonasingleIONdeviceorupgrademultipleIONdevicesofthesametypeinasinglesession.YouaccesstheDeviceUpgraderutilityfromtheManagementConsole.
NOTEA Supervisor password authority (level 5) is required to
upgrade ION devices.
Thefollowinginstructionsdetailhowtoupgradeoneormoredevicesofthesametype.Ifyouneedtoupgradedevicesthataredifferenttypes,youmustperformthefollowinginstructionsforeachdevice.Forexample,ifyouneedtoupgradeanION7330meterandanION7330Ethernetcard,thenyouhavetoperformthefollowinginstructionsonceforthemeter,andthenagainfortheEthernetcard(orviceversa).
SomeIONdevicesrequirethatyouupgradethecomponentsinacertainorder.Forexample,whenupgradingtheION7700,youmustupgradetheXpressCardfirmwarefirst,thentheION7700meterfirmware,thenfinallytheMGTfirmware.Consultyourproductsdocumentationformoreinformation.
Before Using the Device
UpgraderPleasereadthissectionbeforeyoubeginyourupgrade.Therecommendationspresentedherecanhelpwithyourdeviceupgradingprocedure.
Make sure your data logs are
currentDatastoredinthemetersmemoryislostduringthefirmwareupgrade.Thisincludeswaveforms,Min/Maxvalues,andinformationstoredinDataRecorderandIntegratormodules.Ensureyourdatalogsareuptodate(i.e.theIONLogInserterServiceiscaughtup)beforeyoucommenceupgrading.
Ensuring the data logs are current
1.
LaunchVistaandopentheuserdiagramofthedeviceyouplantoupgrade.
2.
ClicktheDataLogViewerforvoltageorotherparametersthatupdatequickly(e.g.everyfifteenminutes).
3. Lookatthetimestampcolumn.

IfthetimestampiscurrentifthedateiscorrectandthecurrenttimeiswithinthetimestampintervalthentheIONLogInserterServiceiscaughtup.
Notethatthetimestampintervalisthedurationbetweentimestamps.Inthisexample,thetimestampintervalis15minutes.
Modifying the transmit delay for Ethernet
devicesForEthernetenabledION8800,ION8600orION7550/ION7650meters,youcansettheTransmitDelayparameterto0forfasterfirmwareupgrades.NotethatyoushouldalsosettheUseAck/NacksparametertoNowhenyoumodifythetransmitdelayforthesedevices.
UpgradingfirmwareforION7300seriesmetersrequiresaminimumtransmitdelayof50ms;however,itisrecommendedthatthedefault150mstransmitdelaybeused.Checkthissettingbeforeyouattempttoupgradeyourdevice.Failuretohaveaminimumof50mstransmitdelayforION7300seriesdevicesmayresultinupgradefailure.
Configuring device transmit delay
1.
StarttheManagementConsole.ClicktheDevicesiconinthelefthandpane.
2.
RightclickthedeviceyouwanttoupgradeinthelistofdevicesandselectProperties.
3. RightclickinthedialogboxandselectAdvancedProperties.
4.
SetTransmitDelaytoatleast50ms(150msisrecommended)forION7300seriesmeters,orsetTransmitDelayto0forION7550,ION7650,ION8600andION8800meters(setUseAck/NackstoNoforthislattergroupofdevicestoo.)
5. ClickOK.
This must be set to a minimum of 50 ms for ION7300 series meters
(150 ms is the default).

NOTEWhen upgrading the firmware for devices in serial and modem
sites, it is recommended that you keepthe transmit delay at the
sites default (i.e. 150 ms for both serial and modem sites).
Using the Device Upgrader1.
StartManagementConsoleandselectTools>System>DeviceUpgrader.
2. TypeyourIONEnterpriseusernameandpassword,andclickOK.
Aninformationwindowdisplays,containingtipsandwarningsabouttheupgradeoperation.ClickOK.
3. TheDeviceUpgradewindowdisplays.
4.
SelecttheIONdeviceyouwanttoupgradefromListDevicesofType.TheDeviceUpgradelistsallthedevicesoftheselectedtypeintheSelectDevicestoUpgradebox.
Choose the type of device that you want to upgrade. (In this
case, it is an ION7650.)
This area lists all available devices of the specified type.
Highlight the device(s) to upgrade.
When upgrading multiple devices, specify whether the utility
should halt if a certain number of device upgrades fail.
Save/Restore framework is enabled by default, so custom
frameworks are not lost during upgrade.
Click this button to browse your system for the upgrade
file.

Selectthedevice(s)youwanttoupgradefromSelectDevicestoUpgrade.Toselectmultipledevices,holddownCtrlwhileclickingeachdevice.
TheSave/RestoreFrameworkcheckboxisselectedbydefault.Thiskeepsacopyofyourcurrentframeworktemplateduringtheupgrade.
CAUTIONIf you uncheck the Save/Restore Framework check box, the
current framework template for each selecteddevice is deleted when
the firmware upgrade is complete, leaving no framework
configuration in theupgraded devices. Any custom frameworks you
have on the device are also deleted.
If you intend to replace the meters framework configuration with
a new template, it is recommended thatyou upgrade via ION Setup.
See Upgrading Firmware Using ION Setup on page 3 for
information.
6.
Ifyouareupgradingmultipledevices,specifyintheFailureHandlingareahowtheDeviceUpgraderrespondstoanunsuccessfulupgrade:
SelectHaltAftertospecifythenumberoffaileddeviceupgradesthatcanoccurbeforeDeviceUpgraderstops.Bydefault,theutilityissettostopafterthefirstfailedupgrade.
SelectIgnoreAlltoattempttoupgradealloftheselecteddevicesregardlessofanyfailures.
7.
IntheSelectRevisionsection,clickSelectFile.Navigatetotheupgrade(.upg)filethatyouwanttouseandclickOpen.
ThisfilewillbedownloadedtoallthedevicesthatarehighlightedintheSelectDevicestoUpgradelist.
8. ClickUpgradetoupgradetheselecteddevice(s).
TheUpgradeStatusboxshowseachstageintheupgradeprocess,andthePercentCompletedbarindicatestheprogressofeachupgrade.EachcompletedupgradeisnotedintheUpgradeStatusbox.
Enterthemeterpassword(s)whenpromptedtodoso.
NOTEIf connection to the device is lost, or if power to the
device is interrupted during an upgrade, restart theDevice Upgrade
utility procedure.
9.
DownloadandinstalltheIONsoftwareupdatesforyournewfirmwarefromthewebsite.
In this example, an ION7300 Ethernet card is the device selected
for upgrade.
Select the ION7300 meter that contains the ION7300 Ethernet card
that will be upgraded.
