The Committee wishes to extend its sympathy to those who have lost family or friends since the last
Newsletter. Please be assured our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Page 3
PLEASE NOTE: Changes for classes scheduled in SuniTAFE classrooms are possible at any time. We are the guests of the Sunraysia Institute of TAFE, and they may require for their own purposes a venue that we had previously booked.
Unexpected enrolments may cause a change from a small venue to a larger one, or vice versa. A tutor may become unavailable.
If a change of venue is necessary (or a cancellation), a notice will be posted in Lecture Room 1. PLEASE WATCH OUT FOR THESE NOTICES
Please make sure you have your Course Selection form in early as we have to book rooms for
classes.
Please note if you wish to join a class with a limit on enrolments, (e.g. computer classes), an
early application gives you a better chance of acceptance.
At class always sign the attendance roll and wear your name-tag. This is very important. New
members can collect their name-tag from the board on the wall of Lecture Room 1.
Cancer Research Support.
AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST MORNING TEA
Monday May22nd to Friday May 26th
This year’s effort for cancer research starts on the 22nd of May and runs for
the full week to enable all classes to participate. This is a one off time that we
ask you to pay for your morning and afternoon tea. We will of course sweeten
the deal with some nice biscuits.
A gold coin donation would be appreciated.
All Donations go to Cancer Council Australia.
QUIET PLEASE.
Would members please consider others when passing through Lecture Room 1 either to the toilets or the
Office.
It is very distracting for members attending courses in LR1 to have noisy interruptions during a class
and these include conversations in the kitchen whilst a class is in progress. It may be possible to
synchronise breaks between LR1, LR2 and LR3 to ensure they coincide.

Remember Smith's Weekly & The Bulletin ?
Stop Laughing; this is serious !
With its first issue published in January 1880 and its last in 2008, The Bulletin remains one of Australia’s
longest-running magazines.
In its early heyday, the weekly publication became known as the ‘Bushman’s Bible’, printing specifically
Australian and often controversial material. Many well-known Australian writers and artists contributed to The
Bulletin, including Henry Lawson, Banjo Patterson, Miles Franklin and Norman Lindsay.
A revival in the early 1960s saw the magazine turn to more inclusive political and news-based journalism.

Asia Tutor: Glenn Miller
What a huge topic! Actually, I will mostly concentrate on the geography , but I can’t help adding a lot of other things as
well. Asia is, of course, the world’s largest continent and it covers an incredible amount of types of terrain including the
Gobi Desert, the Himalayas, the Great Wall of China, the frozen wastes of Siberia and the extraordinary vegetation of the
south east. Any single country could be a massive topic but the Good Lord Himself made only one Asia – it wasn’t he
who divided it up into all the Bit-ustans that we have. But you can’t destroy the fabulousness of the whole continent
from the Urals to Japan, from the Arctic to the Indian Ocean. Come along, and if you’ve had travels there, you’re invited
to contribute (if ya wanna).
Weekly commencing 21st April 1.30 pm – 3.30 pm Auditorium

Film Detectives Convenor: Glenn Miller
On Sunday afternoons over the last several years, we have all but exhausted the Agatha Christie’s – Poirot, Marple,
Tommy and Tuppence and so forth, so I thought we might look at some of the films (films not television) that got the
whole world interested in crime mysteries, such as Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe or Dashiell Hammett’s Sam
Spade as well as the Thin Man series. All made terrific films as did, in their very different way, Charlie Chan, Mr Moto,
Lord Peter Wimsey and Father Brown. Come along and get caught up. Our first screening will be on Sunday 30th April
at 2pm: The Big Sleep with Humphrey Bogart as Philip Marlowe.
Fortnightly commencing 30th April 2pm onwards Lecture Room 1

Sunday afternoon and meet other U3A members.
COST - $10
Sunday, 25th June 12.00 pm onwards. Lecture Room 1 Patio.
Power Outage
We had a power cut at our house this morning and my PC, laptop, TV, DVD, iPad & my new surround sound
music system were all shut down.
Then I discovered that my mobile phone battery was dead and to top it off it was raining outside, so I couldn't
play golf.
I went into the kitchen to make coffee and then I remembered that this also needs power, so I sat and talked
with my wife for a couple of hours.
She seems like a nice person.
Important notice
If anybody out there has an interest and would like to give a class or classes
to your fellow U3A members, we would love to hear from you. You may
also know about an interesting place to visit or have some other suggestion
about classes that we could introduce either as a regular class or a ‘one-off’.
Give your suggestions to any Committee member. Thank you for the
continued support of your U3A
