University of Malta
Some presentation contents (except where otherwise indicated):
…but with all this, comes the responsibility of choice, or
should I say, “spoilt for choice”

When choosing
Ask yourself or consider how you:
Perceive the world;
Define and value your interests;
Best understand underlying concepts.
Always bear in mind that:
As you age will change so will your outlook;
Do not feel obliged to follow advice and opinion;
What might seem an exiting way to learn for
one, might not be for another.
Slide 6 of 76

So, you MUST choose well, basing yourself on…
Your true interests;
Your capabilities;
Your understanding;
Your plans (short- and longer-term);
Market and industry realities;
Prevailing and emerging Socio-Economic
tendencies.
As mentioned earlier, ICT has several always-evolving
aspects. For example, using a car as a metaphor…

Literally…ICT makes the saying “The world at one’s fingertips” come true!
Slide 10 of 76

One might consider reasoning as follows
Using the previous “car” metaphor and taking “x” to mean anyof the highlighted ICT roles:
If you are interested in becoming “x”, then…
Ask yourself:
What is being “x” understood to be?
Why is “x” seen as “attractive”?
How and through which sources did you get to be informed about “x”?
What do you understand a good “x” to be?
Make sure you understand:
Exactly what being “x” actually means and the tasks it entails;
What knowledge and which skills would be required to be a good “x”;
Where and how best to obtain such knowledge and skills;
What attitude should one have to succeed as “x”;
What career options and benefits can one expect from being “x”.
Slide 11 of 76

Why choose ICT? Well if one…
Likes technology and related matters;
Loves and rises to a challenge;
Has an inquisitive nature;
Wants to be able to choose from a variety of jobs;
Wants to be in demand and sought after;
Wants a very decent pay and career path;
Loves to learn new stuff;
Wants one’s solutions to change things in the world;
Likes to see one’s ideas help others.
Slide 12 of 76

Simply put, do you like to…
Create and build things?
Investigate things?
Improve and get more out of things?
Communicate with and connect things?
Be in control of things?
Understand and explain things?
Use things?
Solve things?
Then, one should definitely consider a career in ICT.But why, …should you still be asking?

…Because this is exactly what we do in ICT
Find solutions to interesting stuff
Make machines talk to each other
Make machines understand us
Make machines that understand us
Make machines do stuff nothing else can
Build stuff that makes life easier
Give people tools to be able to do more
Open up new areas and instigate ideas
Make the world a smaller place
Break down barriers
Challenge existing situations

B.Sc. I.T. (Hons) in Computing & Business
Focuses on the supply of IT solutions based on
determination, development, deployment and management
of the right ICT solution by appreciating the specifics of, and
using appropriate methods targeting, business processes
and practice.
The course is about computing. However, business-friendly
IT activities determine the approach and skills a graduate
learns from this programme.
The course has two main well-coupled components
• Computing (basic software development skills);
• Business (solid appreciation of modern commercial
trends and needs).

B.Sc. I.T. (Hons) in Software Development
Focuses on the use and integration of technologies and the
management of information to professionally create
modern ICT solutions of demonstrable quality according to
specific real-world needs
Types of software tackled is both stand-alone and on-line,
web and cloud, mobile or not. The techniques used are
mainly object-oriented, but several other types of
programming paradigms and a spread of technologies are
tackled

Special Mention
Distinctions between Computing and Business &
Software Development Degrees
CB is “lighter” on intensive and specific software
development methodology. Its focus is more on
information management within commercial
processes. Nevertheless, some overlap with the
SD course necessarily exists.
NOTE: The “Computing and Business” Degree of the
Faculty of ICT is not related to, and is completely
different from, the “Business and IT” Degree offered
by the Faculty of Economics, Management and
Accountancy (FEMA)Back to UG degree list

The AI degree focuses ...
...on the science of making machines do things, thatwould require intelligence if done by humans.
In particular, AI work focuses on creating
✓Smart Environments
✓Intelligent Internet
✓Game Mechanics
✓Smart Devices
✓Robots and
✓Smart InterfacesSlide 44 of 76

In AI we attempt to answer 2 questions
What is fascinating about AI is...the answers to both questions constantlyprogress as we further elaborate examples ofhuman intelligence and as the spectrum ofapplicable hardware and software technologiesevolves.
