The response of all other inputs depends on quality of seeds to a large extent. It is estimated that the direct contribution of quality seed alone to the total production is about 15 – 20% depending upon the crop and it can be further raised up to 45% with efficient management of other inputs. Production of high-quality seed is fundamental to modern agriculture. Most annual crops are established each season from seeds, and seed quality can have a major impact on potential crop yield. Seeds can serve as the delivery system not only for improved genetics but also for new planting and production methods and crop protection strategies that improve the overall efficiency of agriculture and reduce its environmental impact. University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga has a very important role to play in terms of production and supply of quality Nucleus and Breeder seeds of all Agricultural and Horticultural crops of this region. Nucleus and Breeder seed are the backbone of the seed programme. Besides, the University also has the plan to produce Foundation Seed (FS) and Certified Seed (CS) in the constituent research stations for the benefit of the local farmers. UAHS, Shivamogga is endowed with varied agro-climatic zones suitable for cultivation and seed production of many Agricultural and Horticultural crops.

Seed is the basic and most critical input for sustainable agriculture. The response of all other inputs depends on quality of seeds to a
large extent. It is estimated that the direct contribution of quality seed alone to the total production is about 15 – 20% depending upon the crop
and it can be further raised up to 45% with efficient management of other inputs. Production of high-quality seed is fundamental to modern
agriculture. Most annual crops are established each season from seeds, and seed quality can have a major impact on potential crop yield. Seeds
can serve as the delivery system not only for improved genetics but also for new planting and production methods and crop protection strategies
that improve the overall efficiency of agriculture and reduce its environmental impact.
University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga has a very important role to play in terms of production and supply of
quality Nucleus and Breeder seeds of all Agricultural and Horticultural crops of this region. Nucleus and Breeder seed are the backbone of the
seed programme. Besides, the University also has the plan to produce Foundation Seed (FS) and Certified Seed (CS) in the constituent research
stations for the benefit of the local farmers. UAHS, Shivamogga is endowed with varied agro-climatic zones suitable for cultivation and seed
production of many Agricultural and Horticultural crops.
2
Realizing the importance of quality seed UAHS, Shivamogga started the Seed Unit during 2013 headed by Special Officer (Seeds), with
the following broad objectives.
Production and Supply of Nucleus, Breeder, Foundation, Certified and Truthfully Labeled seeds of Agricultural and Horticultural crops
of the region.
Human Resource Development for quality seed production through training programme, demonstration and field days.
Popularization of new Varieties/ Hybrids to encourage varietal replacement.
Maintenance breeding of released varieties/parents of hybrids.
Research on seed quality maintenance and enhancement.
Seed production activity is carried out both in University Research Station and farmers fields under scientist-Farmer participatory seed
