‘The ATLAS programme is aimed at

students who want to contribute to the

society of the future. There is a growing

contrast between the rise in technological

innovations and the decline in people who

understand technology well enough to

accurately assess its potential and risks.

The ATLAS programme is designed to

bridge that gap by educating students to

understand the technical, societal and

personal implications of new technology.

Only highly accomplished and motivated

students will be able to face this challenge

with suffi cient acumen, which is why we

select applicants on the basis of their

talent and ambition.’

THE NEED FOR A NEW KIND OF ENGINEERAs global challenges increase and new technologies emerge, engineers of the future will have to rely on multidisciplinary solutions. Industry and government leaders realize that technological experts will require a deeper understanding of the implications of technical solutions and corresponding policy

decisions. The challenges of the future call for a New Engineer — a generalist who can combine technological and societal approaches with design solutions that can be implemented in a range of social, cultural and political contexts.ATLAS aspires to train these New Engineers: driven by technology, but also socially engaged, and trained not only to understand technology, but its implications for society as well. ATLAS students will acquire a solid foundation in both engineering and social science concepts, but will also develop their creativity, fl exibility, leadership and communication skills. This ensures that graduates are academically well-rounded: both systems- and

The University College Twente offers the fi rst technology-driven liberal education programme in the Netherlands. This three-year English-taught Bachelor’s programme has a new approach to engineering education. It is for students who look beyond obvious solutions and want to turn challenges into socially meaningful, technologically-driven change.

process-thinkers, holistic problem solvers and opinion leaders who are able to turn original solutions into real change that makes the world a better place to live in.

PROJECT-BASED EDUCATION Hands-on projects form the core of your education and drive learning. For half of your curriculum, you work in teams on large, semester-long projects. In parallel to these projects, you study relevant theory and learn new skills. Teams are advised by experienced scientists and engineers, who monitor progress, provide guidance, and ensure that all students are learning.

REAL-WORLD IMPACTEach semester focuses on a real-

world issue incorporating both technological and social aspects. Topics include Human Movement, Renewable Energy and Sustainability, Extremes (Nano-Robotics and Mega Structures), Safety and Security (Smart 3D printing). By structuring the curriculum around these themes, we ensure that the knowledge you acquire is linked in a meaningful way. This allows you to learn how technological and social developments can infl uence and reinforce each other.

ACADEMIC SKILLSThe programme focuses on developing skills that will allow you to succeed in any discipline. Guided by a dynamic team of instructors from a range of academic fi elds, you will receive intense, personalized instruction on how technological and social developments infl uence and often reinforce each other. Technical and social perspectives are always involved - whether the issue concerns future food or energy, the effects of social media on security, or risks to water security from continuing urbanization.

MAKING A DIFFERENCEIn addition, our students get to work with external clients. These clients present a problem to the class who, at the end of the semester, provide the clients meaningful solutions. Students learn skills through planning and execution of real-world projects. ATLAS students have worked with Jamie Hyneman (co-host of the popular television series “MythBusters” and honorary doctor at the University of Twente),

municipal authorities in the Netherlands, the EUROS rowing association, and the world-renowned Mars One Foundation.

LIFE-LONG LEARNERSATLAS is focused on the personal development of our students. Personal mentors and tutors help students develop the skills needed to become life-long learners. The curriculum emphasizes feedback and evidence, designed to ensure that students take control of their own learning, an essential skill not

What I love about Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences (ATLAS) programme is the breadth of

topics I get to deal with, always integrated with each other. This is made possible thanks to the

new teaching approach, which focuses on seeking out knowledge and learning new skills.

ATLAS always challenges me!

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANThe ATLAS curriculum covers three domains: Maths, Physics and Social Science, as well as Learning Lines aimed at developing skills in areas such as research, design, communication and leadership, among others. At the start of each semester, each student establishes his or her own Personal Development Plan and formulates personal learning goals. The plan describes the domains and Learning Lines in which the student wishes to excel, and it lays out a strategy for achieving the student’s goals. The plan provides a roadmap for the student’s learning. It enables

teachers and peers to provide feedback on the student’s development, an essential ingredient for helping students excel.

Personal Pursuit: Music and Educational Science

‘For my Personal Pursuit, I learned to create animations, focusing on

instructional animations for the Twente Academy website.

This website explains concepts for high school students using short

texts, interactive experiments, and animations. I learned how to work

with several animation programs and how to make them attractive

while remaining clear. Besides that, I wrote the short texts and

improved my drawing skills. Everyone was more than willing to help

and I really enjoyed being a member of the Twente Academy team.

I’m grateful I’m at ATLAS, because this opportunity simply

wouldn’t have been available in a different degree programme.’

‘For my Personal Pursuit, I learned to be a music teacher.

I gave music lessons to high school students and helped

them prepare for concerts. I also founded the ATLAS band

and along with the enthusiastic band - organized a Christmas

concert for the ATLAS community. I enjoyed doing all this,

and I learned a lot about teaching, music and leadership.

Next year, I plan to continue with the same Personal Pursuit

by taking a didactics course at the University of Twente.

And of course I’ll keep playing in the ATLAS band!’

Students come to University College Twente with different backgrounds, interests, skills and ambitions; everyone has a unique perspective. ATLAS nurtures this diversity through Personal Pursuits, which encourage each student to study topics and practice skills that they are deeply interested in.

Personal Pursuits are often an extension of a student’s passion for music, visual arts, sports, or a scientifi c topic. They may also be used to explore an activity such as teaching, public service, or an internship. Personal Pursuit is an opportunity for students to go above-and-beyond the curriculum.

The wide range of Personal Pursuits adds a unique fl avour to each group of students. Here are just a couple of the Personal Pursuit topics chosen by the Class of 2016:

SHARP AND WELL-ROUNDEDUnlike many traditional degree programmes, ATLAS is for students with a broad range of interests and the talent to develop comprehensive and in-depth knowledge in multiple fi elds of study. If you have a fascination and aptitude for science and technology, if you want to develop a wider range of knowledge and skills, and if you wish to foster an international orientation and build a courageous attitude — ATLAS is a great programme.

MY DECISION‘Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences (ATLAS)

was the first programme to capture my interest.

First of all, I liked the programme’s breadth.

Other programmes more or less force you to

commit yourself to a field you may not even be

sure about yet. ATLAS offers a very broad

perspective, while at the same time leaving

room for specializing as I wish. The second big

appeal is the project-based teaching method, in

which I constantly apply knowledge to real-

world issues and situations. It’s completely

different from just sitting through lectures and

passing exams. The third point is the fact that

ATLAS is not just knowledge-centred: because

of the way things are done here, I get to develop

other skills, such as leadership, flexibility,

organizing and so on – really useful skills I would

never have learned at a UK university.

STUDYING IN THE NETHERLANDSMany of my friends failed to see why I decided

to go abroad for university. The fact is that, with

ATLAS, I felt I had found the distinctive kind of

programme I was looking for. In England, I

wouldn’t have been able to distinguish myself

from the thousands of other students doing

more or less similar programmes. At ATLAS, I

am doing something special.

Of course, the fees also helped me in my

decision-making: in Holland I’m paying

a third of what I would have been

paying in the UK.

“ I’VE FOUND THE DISTINCTIVE PROGRAMME I WAS LOOKING FOR “

7.9The University of Twente (UT) is a research university with an entrepreneurial spirit and a reputation for developing cutting-edge technology aimed at stimulating change and progress in society. In fact, University College Twente is a highly concentrated version of the UT’s ethos and

character. Drawing upon the best of what the university has to offer in terms of teaching staff, educational approach and an international network, University College Twente reflects the university’s strong internal culture of innovation across multiple disciplines, and its commitment to the pursuit of academic excellence.

GUARANTEED ON-CAMPUS HOUSINGUniversity College Twente provides all students with guaranteed on-campus housing for the fi rst two years of the programme. During this time students live together, forming an inclusive and supportive living environment. Students form a strong sense of shared identity. And the international profi le creates peer-to-peer learning by sharing cultures, experiences and discoveries as you progress through the ATLAS programme.

the tutorials, inspiring lectures, project group meetings and one-on-one mentor meetings take place. The name of the building is symbolic for University College Twente. A citadel is a fortress protecting a town, sometimes incorporating a castle. The term derives from the same Latin root as the word ‘city’, civis, meaning citizen. It is meaningful that, in a fortifi cation with bastions, the citadel is the strongest part of the system. Having the Citadel building located in the middle of the campus symbolizes the close connection that University College Twente has to various fi elds of research and education (social sciences, science, technology, nanotechnology etc.).

UNIQUE GREEN CAMPUSThe University of Twente is the only university in the Netherlands with a true campus. Spread over 150 hectares of park land, our safe and attractive campus provides an academic and social environment that houses approximately 3,000 students. As an ATLAS student, you will have full access to all on-campus facilities, including the fastest Wi-Fi internet connection in Europe, a world-class research library, student associations, and extracurricular activities. Living on campus also means direct access to our sports facilities, grocery store, restaurants, cafés and bars, and health services.

ENSCHEDE – A TRUE STUDENT CITY Wonderful weekly markets, cosy cafés and busy shopping arcades are an integral part of the street scene – as are the beautifully maintained parks and historic house facades that often conceal a museum or a theatre behind them. However, the city’s unique fl air comes from the students – cycling to the university, lying at the shore of the Rutbeek lake reading, or simply enjoying a meet-up at the market square.Enschede and its students go hand-in-hand. It’s hardly surprising as academics account for almost a third of the city’s population of 157,000. In addition to the University of Twente, the Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the Artez Institute of the Art, there are also three institutes of science education and research. The hub of student life is the campus of the University of Twente with its modern educational buildings, laboratories, student housing, sport facilities, as well as bars, restaurants, and a theatre.

One hears languages from all over the world in the city – but it’s still easy to get to know people as the tight-knit community of the university and the city’s wide range of leisure activities make fi nding friends a breeze.

‘We do all kinds of fun activities

like the student relay race. Also,

we never let a birthday slip by

without getting together for a

personal level.’

It is the student community that makes University College Twente so special. During the ATLAS programme you live and work together, tackling real-world projects that involve many perspectives and potential solutions. The support of the teaching staff is important, but receiving support and being motivated by your peers is what creates a true learning environment.

STUDENT-BUILTThe University College Twente opened its doors in September 2013 to the fi rst class of pioneers. Students immediately took the lead building the community, and the founding Class of 2016 has created a rich learning environment and a close bond among students and staff. Students have organized a wide range of activities, including a Christmas concert for lecturers and families by a contemporary orchestra of ATLAS student musicians, a study trip to Geneva to visit the ‘ATLAS’ particle physics detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, as well as to the World Trade Organization and the United Nations, and participating in the Guinness World Records renowned largest student relay race.

ATLANTIS STUDENT ASSOCIATION Since January 2014 ATLAS has had its own student association – ATLANTIS. The student association serves various purposes: it organizes activities that bring the ATLAS student community closer together, and it gives feedback to the teaching staff in order to improve the organization and structure of the educational programme.

HONOUR CODETo foster and encourage a true learning community, students decided to create an Honour Code. By signing the Code, they pledge to embody the spirit of honour and integrity represented by four core values: Respect, Trust, Integrity and Role. The Honour Code is based on the simple premise that, given the choice, people will do the right thing. It means that students take charge of their own education and personal development. It illustrates commitment towards their personal role at the University College Twente.
