TECHNOLOGY AND LIBERAL ARTS & SCIENCES (ATLAS)ACADEMIC YEAR 2016 - 2017

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE TWENTE

Page 2: University College Twente brochure 2016-2017

As a student of the Class of 2016, I am proud to introduce this student-centred Bachelor’s programme Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences (ATLAS) to you as a prospective student!

This programme is your and my chance to study at the intersection between technical and social sciences and develop ourselves academically as well as personally following the path we - students - choose.

ATLAS trusts us to be able to defi ne our own goals and steer our education. The support of the ATLAS community of teachers and students is essential for this. Therefore a two-way trust is present in our community between teachers, peer students and the individual student. Only when we trust ourselves and others and are trustworthy, we are able to take our education in our own hands. Refl ection and feedback help us as students to fi gure out how to change the curriculum according to our needs and wishes, both skill and content wise. The education in ATLAS is thus a constantly changing one that we as students develop in collaboration with peers and teachers. Taking responsibility for my learning in this way has made me more grounded and balanced, which allows me to step further towards fi nding out who I am and what I want from my life both on an academic but also personal level.

WELCOME

University College Twente is the international honours college of the University of Twente, founded in 2012. Our Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences programme, ATLAS for short, is aimed at students who want to make a difference. The ATLAS programme takes three years or six semesters. After successful completion you will earn a Bachelor of Science degree that is a ticket to the professional world or to a Master’s programme of your choice around the world.

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE TWENTE UNIVERSITY COLLEGES IN THE NETHERLANDSA University College is an honours college that is part of the prominent research university, offering a broad Bachelor’s programme based on a Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum.University Colleges offer a small-scale, tightly knit academic community with an international atmosphere and often a residential setting for its students.

There are currently ten University Colleges in the Netherlands. University College Twente is the only one that integrates Technology with Liberal Arts & Sciences.

OUTSIDE THE CROWDED URBAN AREAS IN THE WEST OF THE NETHERLANDS, ENSCHEDE IS SAFE, GREEN, EASY-TO-REACH, AND LOCATED CENTRALLY BETWEEN MAJOR EUROPEAN CAPITALS

The programme is built around the challenges of modern society; challenges that cannot be solved by either technology or social interventions but require both social and technical perspectives. ATLAS student learn to combine these perspectives and come up with radical new solutions. The personal development of students is central to our view on academic education. The ATLAS curriculum is a framework that invites students to choose their own path. At the College, you get the opportunity to discover and develop your academic preferences and talents. Of course, the College provides intensive guidance to make relevant choices.University College Twente is a residential college. All students live and work together. Learning is not confi ned to the classroom. Working, sports, eating and relaxing together with other students alternate with your interaction with lecturers. This makes University College Twente an engaging and motivating learning environment. A true learning community.

The challenges we face are too complex for solutions that are only technological - or only social. Technology has penetrated almost every part of our daily lives. Yet only few people have more than a very basic understanding of technology, let alone understand it well enough to design relevant solutions or make well-informed decisions. The Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences (ATLAS) curriculum is built around the challenges of our time; Challenges that require both social and technical perspectives and understanding. ATLAS students don’t choose perspectives, they combine.

With a curriculum fi rmly based in science, mathematics, engineering and social sciences, ATLAS prepares a new kind of problem solver. Traditional engineering education is often relatively narrow, focusing on technological solutions. ATLAS aspires to prepare a new kind of engineers: engineers who know how to re-defi ne or identify the right problem and design radical new solutions. ATLAS student are socially engaged and inspired by technology. They are trained to not only understand technology, but also understand how the technical solutions can be brought into the world.

WHY TECHNOLOGY AND LIBERAL ARTS & SCIENCES?

QiaoQiaoRen

During high school I had no idea about

my further education – until I found out

about University College Twente. The

combination of technology and social

sciences really appealed to me. Now I

can say it is a super University College.

Professors do not just teach classes,

they introduce you to a whole new way

of thinking. They constantly make us

analyze our choices, think critically,

discuss things together, challenge each

other. To me, that is what makes ATLAS

stand out from other Bachelor’s

programmes.

A fun example of what we do here is

the ‘Blue Bike’ project we did in one of

our small groups. We designed a

technical challenge in which two

cyclists steer a remote controlled car

around a racetrack –simply put, an

exploration of interaction, co-operation

and competition.

Class of 2017China

THE TECHNOLOGY AND LIBERAL ARTS & SCIENCES MATCH Liberal Arts & Sciences education is about more than combining disciplines. It is also about personal development; about discovering and developing multiple talents. Traditionally, engineering is not part of a Liberal Arts & Sciences curriculum. We fi rmly believe it should be. Nowadays, understanding the world also requires understanding technology. And solving problems requires

design skills. These are the basic components of engineering.Besides, a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences is the foundation for you to progress to your chosen career or to undertake graduate studies. You will fi nd that your diploma gives you a competitive edge when applying to Master’s degree programmes in a technical fi eld or the social sciences.

First-year students created a prototype of an interactive game to make the community on campus more physically active. They called it -‘Blue Bike’.

The students project ‘Blue Bike’ is well received by the general public at the Maker Faire event in the city of Enschede.

Maker Faire events are organized world-wide to celebrate engineering, crafts, arts and science projects.

The teaching at ATLAS really amazed me,

because it’s really different from high school. They

don’t just tell you what you have to do or know.

They guide you through it.

SEMESTER THEMESSemester themes provide the structure to plan and develop your learning throughout the fi rst two years. By structuring the curriculum around themes, we ensure that the knowledge and skills you acquire are connected in a meaningful way. This allows you to learn how technological and social developments infl uence and reinforce each other.

PROJECTS Projects are the basis for your learning. Projects make up about one third of the curriculum. Each semester students work on a project in groups of four to six students. These groups are formed based on the interests of the individual students. Each group develops its own take on the theme. For each project you decide on your personal learning goals and your role in the group. As with most parts of the ATLAS curriculum – we provide the framework; you choose your way through.

COURSESNext to the project you’ll take several courses each semester. Courses at University College Twente are different from what you’re used to, and different from what you will fi nd in other universities. Students start together, but create their own path through each course and will often fi nish in very different directions, having selected different assignments and activities. The courses and your path through the courses feed into the projects.

COLLABORATION IS THE KEYLearning starts and ends with the individual student. In between, most of the work is done in close collaboration with your fellow students. At University College Twente we’re strong believers of collaborative learning. Most of the classes are organized in a way to encourage a group interaction and a cooperative exploration among students and academic staff. Working in teams guarantees immediate feedback by your peers and speeds up your learning. Tutors, advisers and mentors are guiding you through the process of learning rather than instructing you. Taking responsibility for a team effort and getting things organized is also an important aspect of your professional development.

TAKE THE LEAD IN YOUR OWN ASSESSMENTAt University College Twente learning not only starts, but it also ‘ends’ with you. Choosing your own path within courses can only work if the assessment, the way your work is examined, evaluates the goals you have set out for yourself. We don’t believe that standardized tests and grades help you in your learning or stimulate you in developing your talents. Instead - you are in the lead when it comes to evaluating your development. Show us the evidence that proves you have met your learning goals.

One of the main things I’ve learned

though my experience in teaching the

ATLAS students, or actually – working

together with the ATLAS students, is that

we’re not really working at my pace - it’s

at the pace of the students. When they

want to know more, they ask for more.

DESIGN YOUR OWN PROGRAMMEPlanning your learning starts from your fi rst day at ATLAS. You will, almost immediately, start writing your Personal Development Plan (PDP), together with your mentor. Every student has a mentor who will guide you through your academic journey. The PDP is your road map through the semester, and like all modern navigation systems, it can also be updated on the go if you later decide to take a different route. It helps you articulate what you want to learn, and how.

REFLECT AND ASSESS YOUR PROGRESS Each semester you write a Self-Evaluation Report (SER) based on the ambitions described in your personal development plan. The SER is more than a refl ection on your progress and development. You provide proof and insight on what you have learned in the semester. The SER is discussed and assessed by a panel of lecturers. Your admittance to the next semester is based on their assessment of your SER.

Personal Pursuit: designing a workshop

on nuclear fusion for high school students.

I’ve always enjoyed teaching. During high

school I gave ice skating lessons and

homework assistance. But there is one thing:

I don’t want to be a teacher. Therefore, I looked

for ways of teaching without being a teacher in

the traditional sense and came up with the idea

that I could learn how to organize a workshop.

Personal Pursuit: reconstruct an unbuilt

cathedral using 3D modelling

In the city center of Leeuwarden is an old

leaning tower called “Oldehove”. One day,

while working on my fi nal research project for

high school, I noticed that there were protruding

arches sticking out of the tower. I got curious

and after doing some research, I found out that

the original plan was to not only build a tower,

but a whole cathedral. After reading Ken

Follett’s “Pillars of the Earth”, I was fascinated

by cathedrals. Also, I have always been

interested in architecture in general. When I got

the opportunity to do my Personal Pursuit, I

immediately knew I wanted to fi nd out more

about the unbuilt cathedral of Leeuwarden.

Class of 2017The Netherlands

PURSUE YOUR PASSION At ATLAS, personal development is not only about your academic path. Through the Personal Pursuit we encourage students to go above and beyond the curriculum, and follow their passion. This can be in any direction, as long as it is relevant to your own development. In the past Personal Pursuits have taken students to develop musical instruments, spend time in Russia to learn the language and teach children to play fi eld hockey. The wide range of Personal Pursuits adds a unique fl avor to each group of students. The Personal Pursuit runs through every year of the programme and makes up for ten percent of the programme.
