    1. STRUCTURES

Generally a structure is a lineal organization that distributes and arranges a space. For example everyhouse or building has a structure that consists of a on a strong groundwork that holds up the building. In a final structure we can see how pillars (vertical lines) hold up the floors (horizontal planes) and howboth organize the inner space.Later, both exterior and inner walls will create different spaces and rooms. The structure of a house is an example of a three dimensional structure.Nature offers lots of structures because the growth of different forms from animal and vegetable reignneeds a tidy progression of determined laws.

    2. TYPES OF STRUCTURES

    a. THREE DIMENSIONAL if they are in a three dimensional space.b. TWO DIMENSIONAL if they are in a two dimensional space.

    UNIT 4: STRUCTURES AND MODULES.

Within TWO DIMENSIONAL structures (the ones in this unit) we find:

1b. REGULAR: these are generated by the repetition of a module.2b. NON REGULAR: these are generated by non equal elements, so they follow a non regular order.

-RADIAL STRUCTURES-ONE DIRECTION STRUCTURES- BASIC STRUCTURES

The NON REGULAR structures can also be:

-RADIAL STRUCTURES-ONE DIRECTION STRUCTURES- COMPLEX STRUCTURES

    1b.REGULAR STRUCTURES. These also contain:

    -RADIAL STRUCTURES (1b.1)

These are generated by lineal elements that start form a centre and follow a regular distribution repeatedly.

The rose windows in gothic churches can be considered a good example of radial structure. The radial structures present symmetries.

Symmetry in relation to geometry can be central or axial.

-Axial Symmetry: two points or forms are symmetric if their distances to a straight line, called axis ofsymmetry is the same.

-Central Symmetry: two points or forms are symmetric if their distances to a point, called centre of symmetry,is the same.

    -ONE DIRECTION STRUCTURES (1b.2)

We can say that a one direction structure is a group of parallel lines generally situated with the samedistance between them. For example: a music score.

    -BASIC STRUCTURES (1b.3)

Basic structures are those that aregenerated by a criss-cross line. They arelike equilateral squares or triangles. Theyare called basic meshes or nets.

We can create new modules starting from basic meshes and by tracing onto them diagonals, circles andsemicircles. By this way we can get more complex structures.

    2b. NON REGULAR STRUCTURES-RADIAL STRUCTURES (2b.1)

The elements of the radiation start from a central point and display a circular shape but these elements arenot equals.

    -ONE DIRECTION STRUCTURES (2b.2)

This is when different elements follow the same direction.

    -COMPLEX STRUCTURES (2B.3)

This is when lineal and structural elements do not have a determined orientation.

    3. STRUCTURES AND ART

We can use the structures in a very expressive way, trying to make the observer focus on a determinedelement or detail within them. For example within the regular order of a regular structure, if a different element is introduced immediatelythe order becomes broken and at the same time gives us a chance to call attention to something.

We can see on this painting how quickly our attentionfocuses on the atomic mushroom because that is thedifferent element of the entire composition. That elementbreaks down the repetition of the Mickey Mouse module. So by this way it becomes the most important module inthe composition. How can we interpret this painting? Its title is the same as from a film by Elia Kazan in whichthe narrated life of this cinema director who suffered fromgreat troubles until he got the United States (the dreamtparadise) as an emigrant is told.To the Chronicle Team that apparent paradise issymbolized by Mickey Mouse but that land is not as it isappears because it hides seeds of destruction anddomination (symbolized by the atomic mushroom).

    Victor Vasarelly

The contemporary painter from Hungary uses brilliantly geometric structures in an eminently decorative way. Most of his paintings are modular compositions of vivid colours.
