WARM UP
• America is viewed as being a diverse country. Some sociologist believe in the salad bowl and melting pot theories.
• What influence do cultures have on our American Healthcare system?
SALAD BOWL THEORY
UNIT 2
The salad bowl concept suggests that the integration of the many different cultures of United States residents combine like a salad, as opposed to the more traditional notion of a cultural melting pot.
MELTING POT THEORY
UNIT 2
A place where a variety of races, cultures, or individuals assimilate into a cohesive whole.
A process of blending that often results in invigoration or novelty.

AMERICA IS A DIVERSE NATION CALLED HOME BY A PLETHORA OF RELIGIOUS, CULTURAL AND ETHNIC GROUPS. IN THIS UNIT, STUDENTS WILL
LOOK AT THE KEY ROLE VARIOUS CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS GROUPS AND MOVEMENTS HAVE PLAYED, INFLUENCING THE DEVELOPMENT OF
U.S. HEALTHCARE. (I.E. SOCIAL REFORM ORGANIZATION LIKE THE CHRISTIAN AND
SANITARY COMMISSIONS).
CURRENT HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
UNIT 2
A HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, IS THE ORGANIZATION OF PEOPLE, INSTITUTIONS, AND RESOURCES THAT DELIVER HEALTH CARE SERVICES
TO MEET THE HEALTH NEEDS OF TARGET POPULATIONS
IN THE UNITED STATES WE HAVE A VERY COMPLICATED HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. COMBINES SINGLE PAYER SYSTEM WITH PRIVATE FIRMS.

• Make a list of what makes a page reliable and what doesn’t.
• Remember, a lot of people are now looking online for health advice. It is important for us to know what is good advice, and what is flat out wrong.

THE HEALTH OF THE COLONIAL POPULATION VARIED BY RACE AND REGION. IN PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW JERSEY, AS IN THE REST OF THE COLONIES, NATIVE AMERICANS WERE STRUCK BY EPIDEMIC
DISEASES INTRODUCED FROM THE OLD WORLD, INCLUDING SMALLPOX AND MEASLES.
DISEASE IN COLONIAL AMERICA THAT AFFLICTED THE EARLY IMMIGRANT SETTLERS WAS A DANGEROUS THREAT TO LIFE. SOME
OF THE DISEASES WERE NEW AND TREATMENTS WERE INEFFECTIVE. MALARIA WAS DEADLY TO MANY NEW ARRIVALS.
IN THE LATE 1800 AND EARLY 1900'S, INFECTIOUS DISEASES WERE THE MOST SERIOUS THREAT TO HEALTH AND WELL BEING. THE MOST
COMMON CAUSES OF DEATH WERE THE RESPIRATORY DISEASES PNEUMONIA AND TUBERCULOSIS. THE SECOND MOST COMMON
CAUSE OF DEATH WAS THE CLUSTER OF DIARRHEAL DISEASES SUCH AS CHOLERA AND TYPHOID.
MORTALITY WAS HIGH FOR INFANTS AND SMALL CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY FOR DIPHTHERIA, SMALLPOX, YELLOW FEVER, AND
MALARIA.
MOST SICK PEOPLE TURN TO LOCAL HEALERS, AND USED FOLK REMEDIES. OTHERS RELIED UPON THE MINISTER-PHYSICIANS,
BARBER-SURGEONS, APOTHECARIES, MIDWIVES, AND MINISTERS;
A FEW USED COLONIAL PHYSICIANS TRAINED EITHER IN BRITAIN, OR AN APPRENTICESHIP IN THE COLONIES. ONE COMMON TREATMENT
WAS BLOOD LETTING. (REMOVAL OF BLOOD)
THE METHOD WAS CRUDE DUE TO A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT INFECTION AND DISEASE AMONG MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS.
THERE WAS LITTLE GOVERNMENT CONTROL, REGULATION OF MEDICAL CARE, OR ATTENTION TO PUBLIC HEALTH.

• What should the governments role be in Healthcare?
• Should religion play a role in healthcare?
A. Public Health Laws in Colonial New England
Puritan theology stressed God's role in all earthly occurrences. Disease was seen as God's chastisement for sin.
Public responses went beyond prayer.
Early New Englanders saw no inconsistency in using prayer, medicine, and law in attempting to preserve health.
The welfare of each was not irrelevant, but it was subordinate to the welfare of the whole. And law provided for the general welfare.
B. New York and the Mid-Atlantic Colonies
By 1700, almost every large town provided health care for the poor.
Individual freedom of movement was restricted by quarantine regulations.
Inhabitants of the colony benefited, at least theoretically, from the disease prevention brought by the restrictions.
Those who became ill and suffered the further deprivations wrought by nature and restrictive laws received care, even when they could not afford it on their own.
By the late 1680s, the city of New York not only paid the salary of a physician for the poor, it also frequently appropriated funds to pay private physicians for similar efforts.
C. Public Health in the South
In the South, public health was less developed during the colonial period than it was in New England and the mid-Atlantic states.
One, undoubtedly, was the rural character of the region.
The second unique feature of Southern life was the pervasiveness of slavery.
In a slave-maintaining society, the health of the population enslaved was less a matter of public responsibility than of the slaveowner's self-interest.
Towns paid local physicians to care for the poor.

• Should the US government make sure there is no religious influence in any government organization or sponsored event?
THE UNITED STATES CHRISTIAN COMMISSION (USCC) WAS AN ORGANIZATION THAT FURNISHED SUPPLIES,
MEDICAL SERVICES, AND RELIGIOUS LITERATURE TO UNION TROOPS DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. IT COMBINED
RELIGIOUS SUPPORT WITH SOCIAL SERVICES AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES. IT SUPPLIED PROTESTANT
CHAPLAINS AND SOCIAL WORKERS AND COLLABORATED WITH THE U.S. SANITARY COMMISSION IN PROVIDING
MEDICAL SERVICES.
THE CHRISTIAN COMMISSION WAS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO WHAT THE TROOPS SUFFERED IN THE FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN. ON
NOVEMBER 14, 1861, THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (YMCA) CALLED A CONVENTION
WHICH MET IN NEW YORK CITY.

• They can offer tips on working out (Videos or pictures of themselves working out), healthy skin treatments, meal preps, post motivational quotes, healthy food recipes, unhealthy food choices, pictures of food with their nutritional value, or pictures of restaurants that offer healthy food options.

UNDERSTAND HOW CURRENT MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS ACCOMMODATE AND MODIFY SERVICE AND TREATMENT TO DEMONSTRATE CONSIDERATION AND SENSITIVITY RELIGIOUS-BASED CONCERNS COMPARED TO PRACTICES
PRIOR TO WORLD WAR II. EXAMPLES COULD INCLUDE VIEWS ON PREGNANCY AND/OR CHILDBIRTH, AS WELL AS OPPOSITIONS TO: SEEKING
MODERN MEDICAL ATTENTION, EVALUATIONS BY OPPOSITE GENDER HEALTHCARE WORKERS, VACCINES AND/OR DRUG THERAPIES, INVASIVE PROCEDURES, TRANSPLANTS USING CADAVER OR ANIMAL PARTS, ETC.
