17/4 PH Stainless Steel
17/4 stainless is a martensitic, precipitation hardening steel which combines high strength, hardness & corrosion resistance with excellent mechanical
properties that can be optimised with heat treatment. This versatile material is widely used in the petro-chemical, chemical, food, aerospace, paper &
general metalworking industries. The advantage of precipitation hardening steels is that they can be supplied in a “solution treated” condition, which is
readily machinable. After machining or another fabrication method, a single, low temperature heat treatment can be applied to increase the strength of
the steel. This is known as ageing or age-hardening which is carried out at low temperature so there is very little distortion.
High strength
Corrosion resistant
Readily heat treated
Readily welded, machined & formed
Excellent alternative to standard stainless steels such as 304, where higher strengthor better wear resistance is required.
Superior option to 431 where low temperature impact resistance is required.
More cost effective than higher value nickel alloys where corrosion resistanceis not a primary factor.

Hardening is achieved by a short-time, simple low-temperature treatment. At the solution treating temperature, 1900 F (1038 C), the metal is austenitic0 0
but undergoes transformation to a low-carbon martensitic structure during cooling to room temperature. The transformation is not complete until the
temperature drops to 90 F (32 C). Subsequent heating to temperatures of 900 - 1150 F (482-621 C) for one to four hours precipitation strengthens the0 0 0 0
alloy. This hardening treatment also tempers the martensitic structure, increasing ductility and toughness. As a martensitic structure, the 17/4 alloy
possesses a relatively high strength and hardness in the annealed condition. The strength and hardness of the material is generally somewhat lower in the
H 1150 over aged condition.

To develop further increase in strength, annealed material is precipitation hardened by heat treatment at 900 F (482 C). Heat treatment above 1075 F0 0 0
(579 C) generally result in material softer than material in the annealed condition. The precipitation hardening reaction can be driven past peak strength0
by heat treating at an excessively high temperature or by excessive time at the precipitation hardening temperature. A less dramatic downward shift in
strength results from excessively long precipitation hardening times.

The NACE standard MR0175/ISO 15156 specifies guidelines for stainless steel grades in a range of applications. This is to eliminate the potential for
stress corrosion cracking within H2S and sour service environments. NACE limits the hardness of 17/4 PH to 33 HRC, and restricts the age hardening
cycles to two of the available conditions, H1150D & H1150M.
Duplex & Super DuplexDuplex & Super Duplex
Duplex & Super Duplex are austenitic-ferritic stainless steels that combine many of the beneficial properties of both types of steel. Typical applications
can be found in a range of industries including marine/subsea, pharmaceutical, desalination, road transport, offshore oil & gas, sour well service and food
processing. Widely recognised as cost effective materials, they are typically used where higher strength and increased corrosion
resistance are required.
When used in aggressive process environments, these materials can offer reduced maintenance costs compared to systems utilising a grade such as 316L
while also offering cost benefits compared to 6%Mo stainless steels. Given the mechanical properties of Duplex and Super Duplex materials, weight
savings and potentially cost savings can be realised by utilising thinner materials in suitable applications without compromising system integrity or quality,
when compared to other corrosion resistant alloys. Cost advantages are also offered over nickel and copper nickel alloys where Duplex and Super Duplex
alloys can be successfully deployed in the design. Depending on the environment, these alloys can further offer significant advantages in resisting
microbiologically influenced corrosion or chloride stress corrosion cracking (as well as their improved resistance to pitting corrosion).

Phosphor BronzePhosphor Bronze
Phosphor bronze, available in both wrought and cast form are specified throughout many engineering industries due to inherent characteristics that make
them ideal materials for applications where load and durability are key. Phosphor bronze possesses excellent wear resistance and strength placing it in
high demand when specifying material for heavy duty components such as shafts, bearings and gears. In its wrought product form, Righton stocks both
PB102 and the Naval specification DEFSTAN 02-838 which has full ultrasonic testing as standard.

Copper Nickel 90/10Copper Nickel 90/10
Copper Nickel 90/10 is the most commonly used wrought copper alloy for marine engineering and can be found in seawater systems for naval,
commercial shipping and the oil & gas markets due to its good strength, corrosion resistance and inherent resistance to biofouling in salt water
environments. Righton offers the full selection of products in this alloy, including pipe and fittings to cover all applications.

For severe service environments, nickel alloys come into their own - offering far superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance than many other
corrosion resistant alloys. Depending on the application, alloys can be selected to give excellent performance over a wide range of temperatures,
operating environments and media where strength and corrosion resistance are critical. Marine engineering, chemical and petrochemical processing and
the oil & gas industry all benefit from the use of these alloys in diverse components from valves through fasteners to drill collars.

Copper Nickel 70/30Copper Nickel 70/30
Copper nickel 70/30 is stronger than the more common copper nickel 90/10 and is able to withstand corrosion at higher velocities in marine applications,
making it the favourable choice in submarine systems. Righton carry the UK’s largest range of product in this alloy and are the only stockholder of
DEFSTAN 02-878 metric pipe specification released for use on UK naval vessels.
