Sunday, April 17th OPUS 40, THE FIRST TWENTY YEARS – 3:00 PM at the Kiersted House, Main Street, Saugerties. A talk by Tad Richards, President of Opus 40, pre-sented by THE SAUGERTIES HISTORICAL SOCIETY. We are very proud to present Tad Richards, Author, Graphic Artist and President of Opus 40 as our third speaker in our new series. He will speak on the topic of “Opus 40, The First Twenty Years.” He has written over 30 books, including his most recent novel, Nick and Jake, a book on jazz, Listening to Prestige Vol. 1, 1948-1953, and Opus 40: The First 20 Years, which will be the subject of his talk to the Saugerties Historical Society. Richards came to Saugerties in 1943, when his mother, Barbara, married Harvey Fite. He was three years old at the time, and the massive undertaking that was to become Opus 40 was four, so Opus 40 and its development have always been a part of his life. Opus 40, Harvey Fite’s monumental outdoor sculpture, has brought the eyes of the world to Sau-gerties. What did it arise from? Where did Harvey Fite come from? How did he get to Saugerties, how did he begin his labors, how did his ideas develop? Tad Richards, Fite’s stepson, who grew up with this great undertaking, shares his memories and his archival photos. The program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and donations will be gratefully accepted.

Women’s Health and Fitness Expo Returns for 16th Year
This year’s theme is Experience the Benefits of a Healthy Lifestyle
Lake Katrine, NY — Spring has returned to the Hudson Valley, which means that the annual Women’s Health and Fitness Expo returns May 7th. This year the Expo is celebrating its 16th year of educating the community on the importance of eating well, exercising and living healthier with a theme suited to all ages: Experience the Benefits of a Healthy Lifestyle.
In addition to over 100 booths and exhibits covering both traditional and alternative medical practices, seminars and workshops will cover an eclec-tic mix of topics from hypnosis to menopause to managing stress. Fitness classes range from tai chi to zumba to conditioning and include something for everyone.
“Most of us tend to fragment our health into little compartments -- what we eat, how or if we exercise, when we get checkups, or if we meditate or take vitamins, supplements, or medication,” said Dr. Debra Karnasiewicz, the Expo’s founder and director. “But the various disciplines are not at odds with each other.”
After spending the day with an amazing array of speakers, chefs, nutri-tionists, fitness experts, trainers and physicians, Expo attendees will come away with tools and ideas needed to help lead a healthier, more active and more fulfilling life.
Select specialists will be staffing The Dr. Is In Booth, which gives attend-ees the opportunity to speak privately with a medical professional, and there will be over 20 free health screenings available. A kid’s zone, farmer’s market, spa zone, and a variety of topics geared towards men will also be featured this year.
There will be seminars from fitness guru Kristin McGee and Amanda J. Young as well as lectures from Dr. Laura Corio of The Change Before the Change on everything women need to know in the decade before menopause and authors Ilsye Shapiro and Hallie Rich of Should I Scoop Out My Bagel? And 99 Other Answers to Your Everyday Diet and Nutrition Questions to Help You Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Live Healthy.
This year’s special guests also includes humorous health educator Joel Weintraub, who will speak about how humor can increase creativity, pro-ductivity, memory and decrease disease.
Speakers at previous Expos include sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Olympic gold medalists gymnast Shannon Miller, softball pitcher Jennie Finch, chef Sara Moulton and Super Bowl champion Jeff Feagles.
The 16th Annual Women’s Health and Fitness Expo takes place on May 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Miller Middle School, 65 Fording Place Road, Lake Katrine, NY. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. For more information, visit www.womenshealthexpo.com.
