UConn and its 2013-14 opponents in bold-face type.
At the start of the 2013-14 NBA season, UConn ranked among the top seven college programs in the country in current number of NBA players. Kentucky tops the list with 21 players in the NBA, followed by North Carolina (16), Duke (15), Kansas (14), UCLA (13), and UConn and Florida with 12 each. The Huskies will tie UCLA should 14-year NBA veteran Richard Hamilton, a free agent, signs with a team as is expected. The 12 former Huskies are with eight different NBA franchises, and total a combined 88 seasons of NBA experience. The UConn dozen are led by Ray Allen (Heat), in his 18th NBA season, and Caron Butler (Bucks), in his 12th NBA season. The 10 other former Huskies on NBA rosters include Emeka Okafor (Suns) and Ben Gordon (Bobcats), each in the midst of his 10th year, Charlie Villanueva (Pistons), in his 9th year, Rudy Gay (Raptors), in his 8th season, Hasheem Thabeet (Thunder) and A.J. Price (Timberwolves), each in his 5th year, Jeff Adrien (Bobcats), in his 4th year, Kemba Walker (Bobcats), in his 3rd NBA season, and Jeremy Lamb (Thunder) and Andre Drummond (Pistons), each in his 2nd year. If Hamilton signs, the Huskies’ combined NBA experience would jump to 103 years.

TAMING TEMPLE: With junior forward DeAndre Daniels and senior guard Shabazz Napier combining for 58 points, UConn dominated visiting Temple, 90-66, on Jan. 21 to even its AAC record at 3-3. Daniels had career highs in both points (31) and rebounds (12), while Napier had 27 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists and hit 5 three-pointers in a game for the third time this season. CARDINALS PREVAIL: Despite a career-high 30 points by senior Shabazz Napier, UConn fell to defending NCAA champion Louisville, 76-64, on Jan. 18 at Gampel Pavilion. Plagued by early foul trouble to junior DeAndre Daniels, the Huskies fell behind early and could never catch the Cardinals. Trailing by as many as 16 midway through the second half, UConn managed to cut the lead to seven twice within the last 2:38, but could get no closer. Besides Napier, junior Ryan Boatright was the Huskies’ only other double-figurescorerwith10.
WALKIN’ TALL IN MEMPHIS: UConn won its first American Athletic Conference roadgame with an 83-73 victory at Memphis before 18,039 at the FedExForum. In an exciting game in which the lead changed 13 times and the game was tied three times, UConn took the lead for good on a tip-in by Amida Brimah with 13:08 to play, but the lead was only 75-71 with 1:00 left. That’s when DeAndre Daniels blocked a shot by Memphis’ Joe Jackson and UConn’s Shabazz Napier grabbed the rebound. Lasan Kromah, Napier, and Ryan Boatright hit six straight free throws to put the game away. A Look At Cincinnati UConn and Cincinnati have met 12 times -- once in the second round of the 1995 NCAA Tournament and 11 times as rivals in the Big East Conference -- and UConn holds an 8-4 edge. This year, as members of the American Athletic Conference, they will meet twice in a span of four weeks. Cincinnati is off to one of the finest starts in school history at 21-2, leads the AAC with a 10-0 record, and is currently ranked No. 7 in both the AP and USA Today polls. The Bearcats are riding a 14-game winning streak and are 15-0 at home. Cincinnati is led by fifth-year senior guard and AAC Player of the Year candidate Sean Kilpatrick, who leads the team in scoring (19.4) and senior forward Justin Jackson, who tops the team in rebounding (7.0). The rest of the starting lineup, which has remained intact for all 23 games this season, includes senior forward Titus Rubles,
sophomore forward Shaquille Thomas, and junior guard Ge’Lawn Guyn. The Bearcats use a nine-man rotation. Cincinnati’s defense has been the cornerstone of its success this season. Only one team has scored over 70 points against Cincinnati this season and the Bearcats have held 12 opponnets under 60. They allow an average of just 56.7 ppg and have held 15 opponents under 40 percent shooting. The Bearcats and Huskies will meet again on March 1 at the XL Center in Hartford. Daniels contributed 13 points,
7 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Junior Ryan Boatright added to thedouble-figurescorerswith11points, to go with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. The Huskies grabbed 50 rebounds, the most under Ollie, and outrebounded UCF, 50-34, although UCF was the top rebounding team in the AAC coming into the game. Led by Brimah, the UConn bench scored 41 points.
NEW HOME VENUE: The Huskies played their first homegame in a venue other than in Storrs or Hartford in 27 years when they hosted Eastern Washington before a sellout (9,274) crowd in Bridgeport’s Webster Bank Arena and recorded an 82-65 victory. UConn had difficulty pulling away from the stubborn Eagles, but used a balanced scoring attacktofinallytakecontrolwithabout 6:00 left. Senior Shabazz NapierledfiveHuskiesindoublefigures with 15 points and 9assists. Junior Ryan Boatright (14), senior Niels Giffey (13), sophomore Omar Calhoun (12) and sophomore Phillip Nolan (a career-high 11) were the other
Huskies in double digits. AMERICAN RANKINGS: Through all games of Feb. 3, UConn has three of the top six three-point shooters in the American Athletic Conference. Senior Niels Giffey leads the league at .556, junior DeAndre Daniels is second at .478, and senior Shabazz Napier is sixth at .435. In addition, Napier leads the league in assists at 5.7 and is second in free throw shooting at .876. As a team, UConn tops the American in three-point shooting (.415), free throw shooting (.774) and blocked shots (6.7). In conference games only, Napier leads the league in scoring (21.5) and assists (5.6), junior Ryan Boatright is firstin assist/turnover ratio (2.5). Freshman Amida Brimah is second in blocked shots (2.4) and Daniels is second in three-point shooting percentage (.533). As ateam, theHuskiesarefirst infree throw percentage (.809), rebounding margin (+4.5), and defensive rebounds (26.4).
NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to ESPN.com statistics
through games of Feb. 3, the Huskies are the No. 5 free throw shooting team in the country with a .774 percentage, rank 4th in three-point shooting at .415 and are No. 8 in blocks per game with 6.67 average. Individually, senior Niels Giffey is No. 2 in the country in three-point FG percentage at .556 and his .615 overall shooting percentage would be No. 24 if he had enough buckets to qualify. Junior DeAndre Daniels ranks No. 33 in three-point shooting at .478. Senior Shabazz Napier is 28th in assists per game with 5.7. Freshman Amida Brimah ranks 29th in blocks per game at 2.67.
TRIPLE THREAT: Through 21 games, senior Shabazz Napier leads the Huskies in scoring (17.9), rebounding (6.0), and assists (5.7). Since 1969-70, when UConn began compiling assist records, no one player has led the team in all three categories for a single season. Those who came closest include Tony Hanson in 1976-77, who led in scoring and rebounding and was third in assists, Caron
Butler in 2000-01, who led in scoring and rebounding and was second in assists, and Kemba Walker in 2010-11, who led in scoring and assists and was second in rebounding.
MR. CLUTCH ... AGAIN: senior Shabazz Napier added another chapter to a career filled withclutch performances with a buzzer-beating 15-foot jumper that lifted UConn over #15/13 Florida, 65-64, before a sellout crowd (10,167) at Gampel Pavilion on Dec. 2. Napier, who had 26 points (5 three-pointers), 4 rebounds, and 3 steals in the game, completed a four-point play that put UConn ahead, 63-62, with 34 seconds left, but Florida took back the lead, 64-63, on a Michael Frazier layup with 0:18 to go. With the clock winding down, Napier took an off-balance shot that missed, but teammate DeAndre Daniels tipped the rebound back to Napier, who caught and shot the ball in one motion, just beating the finalhorn.Danielshad14points

DOUBLE TRIPLE-DOUBLE: Senior Shabazz Napier added to the UConn record book on Nov. 11 when he became the only UConn player to ever record a second triple double in his career, scoring 14 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and handing out 10 as-sists to lead the Huskies past Yale, 80-62. Napier’s previous triple double came during his sophomore season, on Nov. 20, 2011, when he had 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists against Cop-pin State. Napier owns two of the 10 triple doubles in UConn his-tory. He and UCF’s Isaiah Sykes are the only two current players in the country to have two triple-doubles during their careers. ALL-TIME LISTS: With 19 points against Houston, UConn senior Shabazz Napier now has 1,614 career points, and has risen to No. 14 on the Huskies’ all-time scoring list. No. 13 on the list is Jerome Dyson (2006-10) with 1,630 points. Napier also had 3 assists against Houston, upping his career total to 571 assists, No. 4 in that category. No. 3 on the list is current UConn head coach Kevin Ollie with 619 assists. Taliek Brown is UConn’s all-time assist leader with 722. Napier is the only player in UConn history with 1,600 points and 550 assists. Three other UConn players -- Doron Shaffer, Tate George, and Taliek Brown --- have 1,000 points and 500 assists.
CONSECUTIVE GAMES: UConn sophomore Phillip Nolan owns the longest current streak of games played by a UConn player with 30 consecutive games. Senior Shabazz Napier has the current record for consecutive starts with 22.
PERCENTAGE LEADER:With37winsinhisfirst51gamesasheadcoach, Kevin Ollie’s .725 winning percentage is the highest of any UConn coach who has coached more than 20 games.
Two outstanding young players, Sam Cassell, Jr., and Dan-iel Hamilton, have signed agreements to attend UConn be-ginning with the 2014-15 academic year. Cassell, a 6-4, 195-pound guard out of Baltimore, is the son of 15-year NBA player Sam Cassell, who is currently an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards. The elder Cas-sell was teammates with UConn head coach Kevin Ollie on the 2002-03 Milwaukee Bucks. Hamilton, a 6-7 guard/forward from Los Angeles, also has family ties to the NBA with older brother Jordan currently playing for the Denver Nuggets.“I’mverypleasedandexcitedtohavethesetwoyoungmen joiningourbasketball program,”Ollie said. “Theyareexcellent players and more importantly, high-character peo-ple. He will have three years of eligibility at UConn after enrolling next fall. “Samisjustanoutstandingguardwhocandoanumberofdifferent thingson thebasketball court,”Ollie said. “Hebrings a level of maturity after two years in junior college. Kevin OLLIEHead Coach
2nd Year as HC; 4th year at UConnIn just his second season as the
head basketball coach at the Uni-versity of Connecticut and only his fourth year in the profession since retiring from the NBA, Kevin Ollie has already established himself as one of the rising young coaching stars in the college game.
Ollie accepted a huge responsi-bility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the history of UConn men’s basketball, replacing legendary Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun.
By the end of the 2012-13 sea-son, however, it was evident that Ollie was more than ready to meet the challenge.
With only two seasons of coach-ing experience after joining Calhoun’s staff as an assistant in 2010-2011, Ollie quickly embraced the opportu-nity to lead the storied UConn pro-gram.
Despite a roster depleted by transfers and early NBA entrants, and a team that was ineligible for any postseason play due to academ-ic shortcomings in years long past, Ollie guided the Huskies to a 20-vic-tory season, a feat no other UConn coach had ever accomplished in his firstyear. The Huskies finished 20-10, ex-
tending UConn’s streak of 20-win seasonstothreestraight, fiveinthelast six years, and 14 in the last 16 years, as well as extending its streak of winning seasons to 26 in a row. UConn posted a 10-8 mark in the difficultBigEastConference.Atsea-son’s end, Ollie’s efforts were recog-nized by Collegeinsider.com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award, given to the top Division I minority coach, who produced excellent re-sultsdespitedifficultoradversecon-ditions.
Ollie raised eyebrows with the
season’s very first game, upsetting14th-ranked Michigan State, 66-62, in the Armed Forces Classic at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The season also included victories over ranked teams Notre Dame and Syra-cuse, and five wins in overtime, aschool record.
On Dec. 29, 2012, less than a dozen games into his first season ashead coach, Ol-lie was awarded a new contract that will run through at least the 2017-18 season.
Ollie’s UConn history --- which began in the fall of 1991 when he re-
ported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful seasons, including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff following a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. He may have only served two sea-sons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possesses a wealth of basketball knowledge after learning fromsomeofthefinestteacherstoever coach the game, including Cal-houn, Chuck Daly, Larry Brown, and George Karl. “After13years in theNBA,Kev-

The reins to the Huskies could not have been handed to anyone who wanted them more than Ollie. “Thisismydreamjob.Iwasmade

ing the mid-1990s, Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time cap-tain.
He played in 124 games for the Hus-kies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 as-sists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Communications.
But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regular-season championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, re-spectively.
Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, display-ing unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA.
Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of
10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts. “One time, I was cut on Christmas
Eve,”saidOllie.“WhataChristmaspres-entthatwas.”
Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earn-ing a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moralfiber, impeccablecharacter, andavast knowledge of the game. His perse-verancefinallypaidoffwithamulti-yearcontract from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who also wanted Ollie to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a profes-sional. Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 different NBA coaches. It was apparent that Ollie would eventu-ally become a coach.
Ollie couldn’t have had a more suc-cessful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national champion-ship. The 2011-12 season culminated in another NCAA appearance and another UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery selection. “KevinOllieepitomizeswhatwewant

all about, and when you say that, that’s heavystuff,”Calhounsaid.“Anyfoxholeyou need to jump in, there’s your guy. Anytime you need a person who won’t quit, there’syourguy.”
Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury with wife Stephanie, who is also a UConn grad (1997), and their two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).
