Hello!
My name is Ryan Tom, and I am humbled to be your
President for the 2014-2015 year! Just a little about
myself—I’m a Second Year Psychology major
working on a Communications double major! I joined
Circle K my Fall Quarter in my first year of college with
minimal Kiwanis Family experience! One of my
favorite events is definitely Fall Training Conference,
because I never realized how many people were in
Circle K. There’s people from all over California,
Nevada, and Hawaii! I found my home here in Circle
K International at UC Davis and decided to serve as
a board member. After a year on board and being
able to welcome in a new class of members, I was
inspired to continue serving this club! So that’s my
little story, and here I am, a resource for your needs
(CKI related or not), your friend, and your President! I
don’t bite at all, and I would love to spend some time
with you! Call me, beep me, if you want to reach me!
Peace out,
Ryan Tom

A Word from our President
Greetings UC Davis Circle K International!
My name is Arianna Dela Rosa and I am happily
serving you all as 2014-2015 Newsletter Chair. After
being a part of Key Club for 3 years, I decided to
continue contributing to the Kiwanis Organization
during college, and I am entirely grateful for doing
so. Circle K has given me the opportunity to make
long lasting friendships, make use of my college
experience, and most importantly, make the
community a better place through leadership and
service! What I hope to achieve is for everyone
reading this newsletter to truly grasp what this
organization means to us as a fellowship building,
leadership growing, and service loving family. So I
hope you enjoy newsletter! Until next month

Kelly was chosen as March Member of the Month because
she has shown exemplary qualities as a general member.
Kelly was one of the top 3 general members in terms of
events attended in March. She has completed over 10 hours
of service, 10 hours of leadership, and 40 hours of
fellowship, and chaired a multiple-day event. With these
accomplishments in mind, choosing Kelly was a clear choice.

We are proud of you, say we are proud of you!
Alan Tran was selected as the
April Member of the Month due
to his superb exhibition of the
three tenets and contributing
well beyond what is expected.
Having over 15 hours in each of
tenets, he also contributed a
great deal to the club by
recording and editing various
videos, such as the Intro of the
2014-2015 UCD CKI Board and
videos meant to thank our
immediate past LTG Luke
Tanaka for his hard work last
year and providing rides to all
CKI events. Not only that, Alan
also was chosen to be a Family
Head for the new Circle K year.
With all of these contributions in
the past month in mind, it was
clear to that Alan Tran deserved
to be April Member of the
Month.

PICNIC DAY
It was a long and hard journey as my co-chair,
Jonathan Dinh, and I planned for Picnic Day and
worked with the school to make sure everything went
well. From food prep to the work party to servicing the
day of, Jonathan and I are extremely grateful to
everyone who helped out, we couldn’t have made it
without you! Shout-outs to Jonathan Apostol for being
there at 7AM to help set-up and Andrew Tom for
providing his van and driving around for hours. Despite
a rocky morning on Picnic Day, we were able to pick
up the energy again and make $1,550 for the incoming
board. Once again, thank you to everyone who
volunteered, visited the booth, or advertised about the
booth…you made Picnic Day 2014 possible!

The University of California, Davis proudly presented its 100th annual Picnic Day
on Saturday, April 12th! This huge event showcased the richness of diversity and
achievement at UC Davis and the surrounding community in the areas of research,
teaching, service, and campus life. More than 200 events took place throughout
campus including competitions, exhibits, parades, and food booths like our Circle
K’s Thai Tea Booth!
Being a Key Clubber for at least three years before in high school, I had no doubt that I would volunteer to be a
Sergeant-at-Arms at Cali-Nev-Ha’s 68th Annual District Convention to see some old faces, make new friends, relive
old memories, and celebrate for a new term. I went to Sacramento Convention Center with some old friends I found
and new friends I met at Capital’s April DCM. Their cheering made me miss the spirit and excitement of the Key
Clubbers as they united with their division, and battled then befriended different divisions. I got to know different
people from different divisions such as Sunset and Golden Gate. We were then split up into groups for the many hotels
the Key Clubbers were staying at. My partner, Seng, and I got to check the floors attentively and lay down some
justice for the unruly Key Clubbers. At the end of the very long night around five in the morning, everybody headed
home safely feeling accomplished, yet super tired, from strengthening the bond between Key Club and Circle K.

Dog n Jog
I had a really great time at the Dog 'n' Jog. There were so
many different kinds of dogs and most of us could not resist
the temptation of petting every single one of them. This run
was for a great cause, which was to raise awareness of the
increasing incidence of obesity, the medical consequences
of excess weight, and the treatment and prevention of
obesity in cats and dogs. Our task was to simply direct the
runners with their dogs towards the correct running course
and clean up afterwards. Probably the best part of the event
was being able to get to know some of the CKI members that
I have not really hung out with before. The Dog 'n' Jog was
an, overall, enjoyable experience and I would definitely do
it again, especially, to see all those pups run!

Just because we’re not key
clubbers, it doesn’t mean we
can’t go to DCON anymore! As
Circle K, we educated to key
clubbers about CKI through
the college expo and helped
keep DCON a fun and safe
environment.
Through this event,
CKI had the
opportunity to
volunteer for a great
cause, which is to
raise awareness of the
obesity in cats and
dogs, and also be
around those cute
animals!
Challah for Hunger
Plant Sale
Wednesdays from 11 to 3, the Hillel house is the
place to be.
Where’s that exactly??
Across from the death star is where you’ll see,
The Sam Len Hillel house, working tirelessly.
Take it from me, a bread loving fatty,
That baking Challah is E-to-the-Z.
You walk in casually, and say hi to Melanie!
She’s been chairing it lately, -WE ARE PROUD OF
YOU SAY—got carried away there… sorry.
Ask anyone there, they’ll get you working quickly.
You might cut strawberries, you might have to
knead.
But you’ll have fun, I guarantee.
They make all kinds of bread, from nutella to
cheese.
And you’ll smell it at first, how they look so tasty.
If you want to buy, cough up some money,
Because at the end of the day, it goes to charity,
But if you work five hours, you get one for free!
Thank you for reading this plea.
Come to Challah for Hunger! #PluggingShamelessly

Plant Sale was really fun for me. There's five different
jobs that you can do: barrel display, photo taking,
plant sale counting, cart taking, and cashier. I was at
barrel display and I was partnered up with someone
new and it’s great to meet new people. Plants were on
display in a barrel and customers could see which
plants they liked and I had a list to tell them where
each plant was being sold. Volunteering outdoors
basically just standing and helping others shop you
should definitely go to the Plant Sale! There's one more
left for this season and then there won't be another one
until the fall.

What sounds more fun than
making bread during with other
CKI members for social justice
causes? Nothing! If you don’t
believe it, maybe this poem about
Challah for Hunger on the left will
convince you!
Want to freshen up your Saturday
mornings by doing service around
nature and beautiful plants? Come
to the next Plant Sale and help sell
plants to the community of Davis!
MARCH OF DIMES
I am very glad I participated the "March for Babies" events
as a volunteer. Helping people is always the NO.1 favorite
thing in my life. However, during all the volunteer works I
have done before, I think "March for Babies" is a really
special event to me. While I was volunteering I heard a lot
of stories about how babies died because of less
Medicare. Those stories are sad but also are reminding
people the reason why they are doing this. In order to
prevent those tragedies to happen, people are trying to
make a difference by holding this kind of event. Even
though all I need to do is some simply set up, cheer and
clean up, I feel like I am willing to do this for babies. It was
an awesome volunteer job even though it was a little bit
tired but at the end of the day, I felt pride of myself, I
helped people and I hope I can be there for the event
again next year.

March of Dimes is a yearly marathon
that raises money to improve the health
of mothers and babies. Traveling all the
way to San Francisco, volunteering for
8 hours, and bringing support and spirit
to the walkers and runners is what I call
true dedication for this cause.
