April 2014 Note From Charlie Wow, it’s already April and spring hasn’t hit in most parts of the country. As a result, our buildings and stores are filling up and capacity is becoming an issue on all fronts. The good news is that we are seeing signs of increased sales that started in the south and recently have had bursts of activity in the west. We expect this trend to progress northward as the weather breaks. But one thing is for sure, the sun will eventually come out and spring will be here. When it does, it will be an all hands on deck event. And our volumes will go from below forecast to redline in a heartbeat. Secondly, if we took a snapshot of what we’ve already delivered and what the Merchandising Execution Team (MET) has set for spring, we’d see more than 126,000 sets of patio furniture in place along with 26,000 grill bays, 16,000 power bays and more than 9,000 miles of hose. That’s pretty impressive, and we are just getting started. Great job, team! Finally, this is going to be another stellar year for our Company. We’re going to work hard, meet our customers’ requests and raise the bar in all phases of our operation to optimize how we do business. That means we need everyone’s help. We’ve talked about TIMWOOD and the need to reduce waste in our business. Now, more than ever, we need to concentrate on getting rid of useless steps that slow us down. As we are shoulder to shoulder working hard to meet the spring surge, let’s look for ways to increase throughput and efficiency. As we identify ways to expedite our work without compromising safety, share them widely. Remember, we are one distribution network with one goal – to become the No. 1 supply chain serving the No. 1 customer service retailer in the world. By working together, we can do it! Associates across the Company celebrated another terrific Success Sharing payout. In 2013, the Company paid out nearly one quarter of a billion dollars in Success Sharing – a record-breaking payout.

Allen O’QuainSDC 5565 Baytown, TexasOperations Manager 11 years with the Company How did you get started with The Home Depot? I began working at SDC 5565 in Baytown, Texas, as a contractor in May of 2002. I was really impressed with the Company and how the associates lived the core values.

What was the first milestone you reached that helped you decide to make your career in an orange apron? My first milestone was becoming a full-time general warehouse associate. Shortly afterward, I was promoted to an inventory control associate. While in that role, I became interested in the logistics side of the business and eventually had the opportunity to cross-train as an outbound coordinator. I later moved into that role and after a while, I was promoted to a department supervisor, where I got to work directly with associates. I truly enjoyed getting to know my team.

Working in each of the roles, I’ve had made it an easy choice for me to pursue becoming operations manager. I appreciate THD giving me the opportunity to grow my career this much in 11 years.

Favorite Hobby: Playing guitar and spending time on the lake with my wife and two daughters.Favorite Book: One Minute Manager by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson Favorite Music: Rock and alternative with a hint of country. Favorite Music Artist: I was raised on country, but eventually Iron Maiden won me over, which led me to favor Metallica.Favorite Sports: Football and Baseball

What person has had the biggest influence on your Home Depot career and why? It is hard to name just one person who had a large impact on my career. As I’ve moved through different departments, several peers and managers have mentored me. Some are still with the Company, while others have moved on. But they all had one thing in common. No matter how busy they were, they always made time to listen, encourage and help me develop.

Tell us your favorite Home Depot story that you’ve been a part of and how it was rewarding to you. Through my career here, we have aided people across the U.S. who were affected by hurricanes, tornadoes, fires and snow. We’ve also sent supplies to help people get through power outages and property damage. It makes me feel good to know we are able to quickly give back something that disastrous circumstances took away.

What‘s your career advice to others who are interested in growing their careers within the Company? There are great advancement opportunities for those that apply themselves. Make sure you follow the career path that drives your interests. If not, your heart won’t be in it and you won’t do your best.

Sherry did an excellent job managing the Locust Grove Direct Fulfillment project. She was devoted to the opening of the building and developed materials ensuring the facility opened successfully and on time. She was the communication center for the project and hosted meetings, calls and on-site visits to make sure everyone stayed on task.

Locust Grove, Ga.Scott shares his knowledge, time and resource tools with his peers and the Building and Implementation teams to provide the additional analysis, streamlining of processes and building enhancements that are needed. He always dedicates his time to helping others succeed.

Mike RodriguezSDC 5645, ICQA Mgr.

Mira Loma, Calif. While managing his SDC’s capacity, Mike worked with the Two-Tier project team to develop a better forecasting and allocation process for the RDCs. He continuously looks for ways to help the building and the Company process freight in a more efficient and cost-effective manner.

To increase benefit awareness, Rocky highlighted a benefit of the week at every startup meeting. As a result, there was a 29-point improvement from 2012 to 2013 in the Employee of Choice (EOC) benefits category.

Rick has been a driving force behind managing the fluid load remap including construction, painting the new layout of the facility and extensive concrete repairs. Recently, he also spearheaded extensive snow removal so the DC could remain operational.

Associate Coach (NAC) process. She also worked to improve the forklift training process and organized a successful hiring event.

Rushi develops great relationships with his immediate team, external groups and with leaders. This skill has been mutually beneficial to the Distribution organization and the teams he interacts with.
