The Season Brochure is printed annually by UApresents.
Volume 17, Issue 1. April 2011.
COVER ART:The cover illustration, titled “Verve,” is by Lucas Gonzalez, a senior Visual Communications student at the University of Arizona with emphases in both Graphic Design and Illustration. The artwork was created to capture the essence of live performance. The lights, bright colors and gestural figures convey the excitement and energy seen on stage. The piece is abstracted so that figures and shapes
are not specific to one category; rather, they can be seen in the context of dance, music and theatre equally well. Special thanks to the UA School of Art, Professor Jackson Boelts and the students of Art 496B.

Often, when people think of the University of Arizona, their first thought is about our great achievements in science. Indeed, the National Science Foundation ranks us #1 in America in the physical sciences. But this University is equally committed to (and passionate about) the role of the arts in the life of our campus.
Nothing better symbolizes that than UApresents. UApresents provides a unique opportunity to expose our students to the finest performers in the world, while also opening the door of our campus to the broader community.
And the reach of UApresents doesn’t stop at the stage door. Our UApresents Education Program extends the campus and stage across Southern Arizona, bringing the excitement of this programming to more than 15,000 children and community members annually through in-school programs, Master Classes and ticket sharing.
This season you will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of great artists performing in an exceptional venue. We deeply appreciate all of the generous supporters who have helped to make this season possible. To all who have so generously given to help bring this wonderful programming to life, our sincere thanks.
Robert N. Shelton, President, The University of Arizona

In 1994, Koopman embarked upon one of the most ambitious projects of the last decades: the integral recording of Bach’s secular and sacred cantatas. The orchestra consists of 27 internationally renowned baroque specialists. For its rare combination of textural clarity and interpretative flexibility, the 25-member choir is considered among today’s most outstanding. Alongside Bach’s music, the ensemble has recorded all major baroque and classical works. Major recognitions include the Gramophone Award, the Diapason d’Or, Fono Forum Stern des Monats, the Prix Hector Berlioz, the BBC Music Award and two Edison and Echo Klassik awards.

Ma has long been one of classical music’s superstars. He has performed for eight American presidents and received numerous awards including the Avery Fisher Prize, Glenn Gould Prize, National Medal of the Arts, Dan David Prize, Sonning Prize, World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Kathryn Stott celebrates a fruitful quarter-of-a-century partnership with Ma. Attracting critical attention as an outstanding prize-winner at the Leeds International Piano Competition, she has since built an impressive repertoire and is among today’s most engaging pianists. Studying with the finest musicians in South America, Sérgio and Odaír Assad have set the benchmark for all other guitarists with a new standard of artistry, ingenuity and expression. Performance and purpose collide in this powerful American stage premiere that illuminates the plight of the Pacific Islands. Scientists expect the radiant and vulnerable coral atolls of Kiribati, Tokelau and Tuvalu to sink into the sea as a result of global warming and climate change. Thirty-six dancers and musicians express their deep connection to nature and their ancestral past through multi-part harmonies, poetry, and gracious movement cascading over dynamic rhythms and inspiring us all to be better stewards of our shared planet. Influenced by her Yemenite roots and singer-songwriters of the ‘60s, Noa is Israel’s leading international concert and recording artist. She plays percussion, guitar and piano, co-wrote the lyrics to the theme for the film Life Is Beautiful and is the recipient of WEF Crystal and Dove of Peace awards. Tucson Chamber Artists’ professional choir and Tucson Symphony Orchestra combine to perform Mozart’s Requiem, which was performed across the globe on the one-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, including at Centennial Hall. A new oratorio by internationally acclaimed composer Stephen Paulus, commissioned by the TCA, also will be performed. Drawing from sacred and secular texts of various traditions and faiths, the work is intended to further the healing of our country by engendering deeper appreciation and respect for our differences, while recognizing that which we share in common: the need for hope and renewal in the face of grief and loss.

The circus is coming to town! Zoppé Family Circus welcomes guests into an intimate 600-seat tent for a one-ring circus that honors the best of the Old-World Italian tradition. Starring Nino the clown and propelled by a central story that features acrobatic feats, equestrian showmanship, canine capers, clowning around and plenty of audience participation.
“The Zoppé circus evokes something from a picture book: the clown, the trapeze, the dancing dogs, the ring and the tent. The show is frozen in time… exactly the way it’s supposed to be.” –The New York Times
