G E N E V I È V E P I N E A U LTFor over 40 years, the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario [TNO] has been producing and presenting plays that reflect upon our society, our community and the human condition. Plays that offer sensitive, sometimes critical – but always deeply human – perspectives on our world and our times. We are pleased to share these moments with you thanks to our English Supertitles.
At the end of our 2013.2014 season, I will be celebrating my tenth anniversary as the TNO’s Artistic Director. How time flies…
Year after year, season after season, the TNO’s audience has encouraged and trusted me. Over the last decade, we have shared emotions, discoveries, shivers and laughter. I hope this new season will bring you its allotment of joy and empathy.
This year, personal, artistic, linguistic and geographical boundaries will fall. I believe that art allows us to overcome any barrier, even our own limits. I hope you will be with us throughout the season and will enjoy these wonderful productions. Please mention us to your family and friends.
The TNO… Without borders!

QUAND LA MER…
A Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario, Théâtre de la Vieille 17and Théâtre Sortie de Secours co-production
An island fishing village struggles to preserve its ancestral ways as the unthinkable unfolds. Far from shore, boats are mired in sand. Catches are meager. Impossibly, the sea is pulling away. Mores and traditions, hopes and beliefs no longer have a reason. Pride and courage mount a long resistance, but each new generation must shed treasured elements of its identity. Each individual’s troubles are the plight of a world and its people.
Inspired by the fate of the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan, this vibrant social portrait seems exotic. This is a traditional society, where colourful customs and time-honoured practices are supposed to regulate the world and its inhabitants. Its unfolding drama, however, feels quite familiar to us: the world is changing and as best we can, we must change as well. The end of a time, with all its anguish, opens onto the future, with all its uncertainty.

He knows he is but one, because none of his successive nationalities is really his own. Nonetheless, he is Iranian. That’s partly because he has never been “from here” in Paris, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, or even Teheran that he fled as a child. But it’s mostly because the blood that young Iranian demonstrators shed in their quest for freedom is the blood that flows through his veins. One day, he hopes, he will know the Iran of their dreams.
Alone on stage among an absent multitude, Mani Soleymanlou delivers his autobiographical monologue with magnetic verve. In glimpses of everyday life, he conveys notions such as identity, solidarity and selfhood across boundaries. His uncertainties are troubling truths. This man who does not know Iran will give you a profound knowledge of Iran. This man who does not know himself will help you know your own humanity.

BIENVEILLANCE
A Théâtre PÀP and Productions À tour de rôle co-production
Kindness is an orchard beyond a busy freeway, thinks Gilles Jean. Crossing there is just too dangerous. Now a rich lawyer, he renews acquaintance with his good childhood friend and his wife at a grim time. Their child is in a coma after falling from a tree house. The ambulance was very slow to arrive, so they are suing. The thing is, Gilles must defend the ambulance service. Despite his attempts to do the right thing, everything remains as wrong as ever.
This tragicomedy is full of imperfect, yet endearing characters. But it is especially full of doubt. Is there such a thing as pure and simple human kindness? For a play that inspires such philosophical musings, the atmosphere is surprisingly light. Its story smartly leads you to a troubling realization. Despite your awareness of the peril and your best efforts to avoid it, kindness always comes at a cost. Somebody has to pay the price.

nLEO
Produced by Y2D Productions (Montréal) in association with Chamäleon Productions (Berlin)
Give gravity just a quarter-turn twist and you become awkward, yet magical. Leo lives in that disoriented world. No matter how hard he tries, for him the floor is an unknowable normalcy. Simply standing up without leaning on the wall? Impossible. On the other hand, he can clamber along the wall like an agile monkey. With an admirable determination, he rummages through his suitcase, looking for ways to enjoy life and feel less alone.
Here, magic doesn’t hide its trick, but that makes it even more mind-bending. While the actor performs to the right of the stage, a camera slanted to 90 degrees projects his full-sized image to the left of the stage. You will be confused, amused and impressed by this deftly executed physical theatre and its exploration of the absurd in our right-side up world.
