University of Manitoba Concert Choir Audition Packet 2018 These auditions are friendly and along with the required material below we will chat about your musical/choral background and interests. Here is what is involved with the audition: Range test: You will be asked to sing some simple patterns. Through these, we will explore both the high and low end of the voice to determine where your vocal range lies, and also to explore your listening and pitch-matching ability. Sight singing: You will be asked to sight sing your preferred part in a piece of music we will perform this season. Test piece: Please prepare your voice part of the test piece: To Shorten Winter’s Sadness by Thomas Weelkes. The full piece must be prepared to the best of your ability for the audition. You will be asked to reschedule your audition if you come unprepared. To assist with your preparation see the YouTube link for a recording of the work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjUGYaUoyo0 Note: For both the test piece and the sight reading excerpt please choose the part that feels most comfortable and is best suited to your choral voice rather than what you might be studying in studio or what you sang in high school (i.e. a dramatic solo soprano might be happier as a choral alto, or you may have sang a part simply because you were needed but would be more comfortable elsewhere). Important Dates for the 2018/19 Season: September 12 – First rehearsal, 5:30-7:30 September 28 (Fri.) – Rehearsal evening from 4:45-9:00. Please book off now to ensure availability. Dinner will be part of the evening; details are still to be determined. September 29 (Sat.) – Rehearsal day from 9:00-4:00. Please book off now to ensure availability. Lunch will be part of the day; details are still to be determined. November 30 (Fri.) – U of M Sing concert dress rehearsal, Westminster United Church. This rehearsal will take place at some point during the day. The exact time is still to be determined.
