sharkfins.Crow said, according to authorities ivory was also found in
a storage facility that the suspectwas renting inMontagueGar-dens.“I don’t know how these men keep getting away with this.
I want to thank all involved for their help in trying to end thisdreadful plundering of our resources,” Crow said.In December last year two Chinese nationals were arrested
after police found elephant tusks, and ivory jewellery in a ga-rage at the complex.“The ivory bust in December was by Chinese nationals in
B1101, and this bust involves A1101. The perpetrators buy flatswhose garages lead directly into the building.“There is no exposure to the outside world, and their floors
only have two units; virtually complete privacy,” said Crow.. Police also confiscated 900 of the shellfish during a recent
operation in Melkbosstrand.Members of the Melkbosstrand police and some volunteers
came upon the illegal poaching activities at Van Riebeeck-strand on Monday 17 September. In the subsequent chase along the beach four suspects were
arrested. The estimated black market value of the abalone is approxi-
mately R250 000.If you have information about perlemoen poaching in Melk-
bosstrand please call 076 583 0270.

The Women and Beyond charity organi-sation has been given a helping hand af-ter staring possible eviction in the face.
The registered non-profit organisationthat helps victims of domestic abuse in theTable View andMilnerton areas was desper-ately looking for other premises after a lackof funds meant they could be evicted fromtheir offices in Blaauwberg Road.Foundermember Pastor Ethel Taylor said
they are very happy after being given newpremises in Atlantis.“It is a five-bedroom house which allows
us to accommodate between 15 and 19womenat a time,” she says. The house was made available to Women
and Beyond by the City of Cape Town’s De-partment of Social and Early Childhood De-velopment.Although grateful for the new premises
which they occupied at the beginning of thismonth, Ethel says, the house is in need of se-rious maintenance work.“Whenwearrived there, thereweren’t any
doors, the geyser was leaking and we havemanaged to paint some of thewalls thatwereburned black, presumably by people whostayed there and burnt candles. The initialquotes we received to fix the house amountto R28 000,” she says.Ethel says she and the sixwomenwho cur-
rently stay at the safe home have done theirbest to make the house inhabitable withtheir limited financial resources.“The women all work together, there is a
schedule of who makes breakfast, who doesthe dishes and who cleans.”Although still very far behind with the
rent for the premises in Blaauwberg Road, she has managed to persuade the lettingagent not to evict them.Thesepremiseswill nowbeused for offices
only, as originally intended. The need foremergency overnight accommodation in thepast has necessitated Ethel to use this smallhouse as a safe home as well.As away of raising funds for both thework
that needs to be done at the home, the run-ning costs of the home, and the rent that is
in arrears, Women and Beyond are sellingboerewors rolls at the Lifestyle Centre inParklands for the next couple of Saturdaymornings. “We ask the people to please comeand support us,” Ethel asked. Those who would like to help Women and
Beyond can contact Ethel on 076 555 8044.

Ekhet vrywilligers begin mobiliseer om my intakverband by te staan.”

The seabirds affected by the re-cent oil spill off the Blouberg-strand coast are doing well in re-habilitation.
Since the spill, a total of 219 oiled, endangered African penguins, twooiled Cape Gannets, 33 penguinchicks and three eggs that wereabandoned as a result of their par-ents being oiled, have been admit-ted to Sanccob, the seabird rehabili-tation centre in Table View.
The oil slickwas drifting in TableBay, which is one of the main feed-ing grounds for seabirds from Rob-ben Island and the West Coast Na-tional Park, but aerial surveillance
reports indicate thatmuch of the oilseen leaking from the vessel hadbeen cleared up.
From 5 to 19 September all theoiled seabirds were washed bySanccob staff andvolunteers and to-gether with the 30 chicks and theeggs are currently undergoing re-habilitation at the centre.
“Two eggs have hatched in Sanc-cob’s Chick Rearing Unit while onewas deemed not viable. All of thebirds are in a very good conditionand are respondingwell to the reha-bilitation process,” said Sanccob’sFrancois Louw. The first group ofbirds were released at Derdesteenyesterday. See pg 1 for pic.

The MEC of Energy, Dipuo Peters, and West-ern Cape Premier, Helen Zille, completed apowerhouse of dignitaries who attended theofficial inaugurationof3WPower/AEGPow-er Solutions’ manufacturing facility in Mil-nerton last week Thursday.
The global leader in solar energy solutions in-troduced the 3 400 m2 and 200 megawatt per an-num facility to government employees, local andinternational partners.AEG Power Solution’s managing director for
SouthAfrica, Trevor deVries, told the assembled
guests that the plant had begun operationsahead of schedule in June, and that the com-pany was proud to be able to provide localjobs as well as locally produced solar invert-ers to help achieve South Africa’s goal of42 % of electricity generated from renewa-ble resources over the next 20 years.“Weare excited to share this important de-
velopment for the Western Cape as well asfor the country as a whole, and today’slaunch proves AEG Power Solutions’ com-mitment to investing in the communities inwhich it operates, as well as the ability todeliver world class solutions specifically forthe local market, customers and condi-tions,” explains Horst Kayser, CEO of AEGPower Solutions Group in his speech.“Over the past few years, AEG Power So-
lutions has equipped and commissionedmore than 860 utility-scale solar installa-tions around the world. As the first factoryof its kind in Africa, we will be using thisfacility, as well as our international exper-tise, to grow South Africa’s role in this im-portant industry across the continent.”Zille said: “Partnership is the key and the
energy sector exemplifies this. We all wantSouthAfrica to succeed, regardless of whichparty we belong to. Whenwe get an investorwith a brand such as AEG then everyone inthe country celebrates!”She added that this venture is important
to reduce our carbon footprint, butmore im-portantly, it creates much-needed jobs.“The biggest reason for poverty is unem-
ployment, sowe are absolutely committed toattracting investment in the manufacturingsector.”Peters emphasised the importance of cre-
ating jobs: “The private sector is starting torespond. Thank you for creating jobs so thatour people can live with the sweat of theirbrow.“It is important that we reduce the
number of peoplewho live off hand-outs. Im-agine if we could invest the money we cur-rently spend on social security and growoureconomy!“We also want to create five million new
jobs by 2020,” she said.

The warm weather on the weekend be-fore last, led to a great turnout for thebeach cleanup day organised by Blou-berg Beach Cleanup team.
“We had an absolutely beautiful day onthe beach.Over 500 people joined us and oth-er cleanups hosted along the beach from La-goon Beach toMelkbos,” said project organ-iser Gregory Player.Player says the official weigh-in of the
rubbish collected at Dolphin Beach came to1,64 tonnes. This did, however, not include the trash
of two other groups that were working fur-ther along the beach who each collect atleast 300 kg.The group aimed to collect two tonnes of
rubbish but, says Player, that was not themain objective of the day. “Wewanted to getpeople out onto the beach to clean up andspend some good, quality time with friends, family and other people of the community.“We also aim to raise awareness of how
much litter there is on the beach and appealto everyone that they should be more re-sponsible and proactive when it comes todealingwith litterwhile on thebeach,”Play-er explained.“Blouberg Beach Cleanup would like to
thank everyone who came out to help andwe are looking forward to our next twocleanups on 6October and 10November,” headded.Any questions or queries can be sent to

Ek is die Here jou God, Ek vat jou hand.
Indie afgelope tien jaar is bykans 183 000mense vermoor.Dit is vier keermeermen-se as ’n volgepakte Nuweland-rugbysta-dion!
In reference to Marita Lustug’s letter in Ty-gerBurger of 19 September, entitled “Conwasn’t from city”. Marita, how many timesdo people have to bewarned not to open theirdoors to strangers, even if not alone at home.
Why on earth would the City Council sendpeople to each and everyhouse inCapeTownto check indoor electricitymeters, plugs and
switches? No, I am sorry, but you have only yourself
to blame for any loss if you still allow stran-gers into your home. Count yourself luckythat he only stole from you – both of youcould have been killed!TINKERBELLMonte Vista

Problem is beggarslack a work ethicI cannot agree more with Patrys Pienaar’sletter last week (“G’n simpatie met bede-laars,” TygerBurger, 19 September), who isof the opinion that the huge number of beg-gars on our streets in the northern suburbs,is due to the lack of a work ethic.
It is too easy to just stand at the trafficlightswith ahang-dog lookon their faces andwait for handouts.
The local authorities are obviously help-less as the numbers are growing by the day.
Theworst of the lot are however those thatexploit small kids, babies and blind peopleto elicit sympathy from motorists that pass.
Surely social services are there to assist,or do they just turn a blind eye?
All these people, along with those sellinggoods at the lights pose a hazard tomotoristsand themselves, which could result in some-one being killed. I guess the driver will thenbe to blame as usual.
MARK GOLDINGParow. TygerBurger supports the City of Cape
Town’s Give Responsibly campaign. This en-courages residents to make contributions – fi-nancial or otherwise – to organisations thatassist the homeless in an organised manner, rather than to these unfortunate people direct-ly. Declare war on gangstersMy dad’s place was robbed twice in amonth. After the second time most of my personalgoods were in storage in his garage.
I did a “recon” of the area and came upwith fivenames ofwhich twowerewitnessedwith items. They are a gangwhich terrorisesBrooklyn, Tygerhof, Milnerton and Rugby.
The police were given 72 hours to appre-
hend them and in doing so they gained myrespect. More people should not be afraid toconfront or just leave a matter alone. In ourcase we were not insured and lost aboutR20 000, but it could have been far worse.
I declare war on these crime gangs!SEANRugby
Demand protectionCrime statistics just released showa 1,9 %drop in house break-ins!
What are the numbers of break-ins ona yearly basis? Forget the percentage de-crease,wewant to knowhowmanyhomeswere invaded or broken into?
The officials say they are happy withthe reduction in most categories, but thepercentage change is so small, I would notmention it, I would be embarrassed!
In my suburb we have had so manymore this year, that it has a very negativeimpact on people’s lives. We, the citizens, demand protection from these criminals.SCOTTYDurbanville

there is a great selection of breeds and per-sonalities to choose fromand the centre’s ex-perienced team of staff, who share morethan 40 years of experience among them, will be on-hand to make sure you find yourperfect companion.“We take our job asmatch-makers very se-
riously,” says SPCA Animal Care Centremanager, Margie Ainscow. “In addition tothe veterinary checks, every single dogavailable for adoption is behaviourally as-sessed and we know each cat’s personalityintimately, which reduces uncertainty foradopters and helps us recommend the rightpet,” she says.Adopting a pet also makes good financial

The band, originally from thenorthern suburbs, will also be re-releasing their album, The RedBlooded Years as a special editionat the end of this month.“It has two new tracks, a re-mix
of “All in the Wind” by Johnny deRidder, all the music videos fromTheRedBloodedYears andnewal-bum artwork,” explains LaudoLiebenberg, aKing’s front-man.Since the release of their last al-
bum, Laudo says aKing have“been playing a lot of shows, writ-
ing new material and building abrand”.“A couple of hiccups along the
way, butwe came out stronger andnow we’re mostly focusing on thefourth full-length album set for re-lease around April 2013,” he adds.Laudo says fans planning to at-
tend Symphonic Rocks can expectto see the band’s three guitarists:himself, Andrew Davenport andHennie van Halen – Jaco Venter isthe drummer who completes theaKing band, but the stage set-upwon’t accommodate him on stage. The band will be performing
“You & I”, “Safe as Houses” and“The dance” with the orchestra.“What more can I say, it’s amaz-
ing and a really overwhelming ex-perience,” Laudo says about beinginvolved in the production.
Other artists performing withthe orchestra on the night includeMiCasa, Zahara, Tumi and theVol-ume, Freshly Ground’s Zolani,Ard Matthews, ChianoSky, VanKoke Cartel, Fokofpolisiekar,Toya Delazy, MacStanley and EdRoland from the internationalband, Collective Soul.John Walton from the Cape

SAREL BURGER
