The bulk carrier that is stranded off the Bloubergstrand shoreline was once again peppered with controlled blasts last week, and despite continuous wreck reduc- tion operations and rough seas, it is still standing. Authorities were alerted when oil leaked from the wreckage on Wednesday, but this incident posed no significant threat accord- ing to disaster risk management centre spokesperson, Wilfred Solomons-Johannes. “One of the underwater tanks ruptured and it released oil that was onboard the wreck. That has been completely sorted out.” The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) was ready to assist with any birds which had been oiled or polluted, but this possibility never materialised. Oil-scare apart, the blasts emanating from the Turkish ship scared many locals, despite the City of Cape Town warning residents that blasts would continue. One Table View resident had the fright of his life when he thought Koeberg power sta- tion exploded. One of the managers at the KFC opposite the shipwreck said she panicked when she heard the first blast. Off-limits “But it turned out it was nothing to be wor- ried about,” she adds. People or vessels were not allowed within 1 000 m of the operational area. The entire beach and dune area opposite the wreck were closed to the public and de- marcated parking areas were off-limits. Continues Solomon-Johannes: “It’s all worth it if you consider that we’re constant- ly weakening the structure. The bow is gone now. If the weather plays along we will con- tinue with operations on Tuesday (yester- day).” When asked how much longer the opera- tion could take he could not put a time frame on it. “One day last week there were quite a few blasts, perhaps seven. People needn’t worry, because all possible precautions are being taken,” he adds. Training Solomon-Johannes says that the opera- tions are being done “free-of-charge” by the SA Navy’s Operational Diving Team (ODT), which uses the controlled blasts as training for members. Sanccob’s conservation director, Venessa Strauss, says that they work closely with the Multi-Agency Task Team that is trying to rid the shoreline of one of its primary eyesores. “Even though there are risks involved for the environment when doing these blasts, Sanccob is very supportive of the operation. We must get rid of that wreck by weakening it. “The sooner the better!” Before last week’s blasts follow-up assess- ments undertaken by the ODT have identi- fied additional areas that require interven- tion, and a decision was made to resume wreck reduction activities in order to reduce potential pollution risks. Intrepid Zapps explore the worldANDRÉ BAKKES
For the Zapp family there is no tomorrow– there is only now.
Besides their four children, Hermanand Candelaria Zapp have populated thepresent with persuasive inspiration and anastonishing narrative of their adventures.
Thirteen years ago the couple fromArgen-tina set out to see the Americas in their 1928Graham Paige vehicle.
A six-month endeavour evolved into a 13-year odyssey around the globe, and quitenaturally two people became six.
Herman (44) and Candelaria (42), alongwith their four children Pampa (10), Tehue(8), Paloma (5) and Wallaby (4) have beensharing their unexpected journey with peo-ple from all over the world.
Last night they continued this trend atMilnerton Aquatic Club and soon they willbe on their way to Namibia and then boldlycarry on throughAfrica.TygerBurger spoke
to thembefore theygave their final presenta-tion in South Africa.
“We are not special. We are just like every-one else, but we are doing something spe-cial,” exclaims Candelaria with a heavySpanish accent.
“If you have a dream you must not beafraid to follow it. Yes, there are many upsand downs – so many challenges – but youmust just go, go, go!”
Herman adds: “We know it will be tricky, but that is what we’re looking for! Adven-ture, challenges... Every day is exciting, eve-rydaywedon’t knowwhatwill happen.Thatis what keeps us alive and in love, becausewe work together to overcome.”
The couple left their world behind themin 2000 when they bought an old car and setoff to Alaska.
Through the goodwill of people they’vemet on the way, neither the money nor themotivation to continue dried up.
After the Argentina-Alaska journey theytravelled from La Quiaca (Argentina) toUshuaia (the southern most city in theworld); from the West of the USA, throughCanada, all the way to the East of the USA;all the way around Australia; from Oceanato Japan, China and India; and SouthAfrica.
They wanted to travel through Africa ina year, but our country was so fascinatingfor the intrepid explorers that they havebeen here for more than eight months!
Candelaria explains: “You have it all here!Themountains, the beaches, the trees... Eve-ryone told us we will fall in love with CapeTown and I was worried about this, becauseif everyone tells you that then you expect toomuch and be disappointed. But Cape Townis even better than we thought!”
According to Herman people also toldthem that they will be robbed somewherealong their journey through South Africa –and indeed they were.
“They were right! But they never told meabout baboons! Baboons stole our medi-cine,” he laughs.
The family has been exceptionally fortu-nate, since they have never been the victimof a serious crime or illness on their 13-yearjourney.
WhenHerman andCandelariawere askedto name one (one!) highlight they struggled.
“One?” asks Candelaria. “I would say thebiggest highlight is people! Making friendswith the locals.”
Another part of the journey that sparkleswithwonderwaswhen the family put the ve-hicle on a raft and rowed through the Ama-zon jungle.
She adds that the most difficult part oftheir travels wasn’t when they lost the rud-der of their raft on the Amazon river, butrather that very first day when they lefttheir lives behind.
“That first day our car broke just 65 kilo-metres into our journey! I think it was verygood that we didn’t return back home to fixit, or we might never have left,” says Cande-laria.

FokuspuntZgerski sê kind-op-kind-mishandeling is
EdithKriel is ’nmaatskaplikewerkerwat
op-kind-geweld in skole gekyk. “Dit is astro-nomies,want ’n oortreder sal gemiddeld 380kinders in sy of haar leeftyd mishandel of
misbruik.
Ao.

The pilot project to provide proper ablutionfacilities to those living in informal settle-ments was officially kicked off at Du Noonlast Thursday. The male and female segmented facility
includes nine full-flush toilets and alsomakes provision for people with disabili-ties.Ward councillor Lubabalo Makeleni
elaborates: “Most of the shacks have abso-lutely no toilets at all, so it’s obvious thatthey are over the moon!”It was installed in West Beach Fall area,
which currently has about 150 shacks.“The challenge now is to train the com-
munity to use these ablution facilities sothat it can be properly maintained. We willtrain the parents, who in turnwill train thechildren. We don’t want these toilets to beblocked by foreign objects being thrown in-to them,” adds Makeleni. The janitors have been employed
through the Expanded Public Works Pro-gramme (EPWP) to operate andmaintain it.The citywill provide toilet paper and clean-ing products in order for them to do so. TheEPWP workers who live in the communitywill form part of the city’s monitoring sys-tem by informing the city of blockages, leaks or any other concerns.Makeleni continues: “This is just a tem-
porary facility, since the goal is to buildhouses with toilets in them. For now thisfacility is vital. There will always be oneperson on duty, whowill hand out toilet pa-per to anyone who wants to use the facili-ty.”Mayoral committee member for utility
services, Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg,
says that the city welcomes this pilotproject, which has enhanced service provi-sion, as it was co-ordinated with the com-munity leadership who took responsibilityfor their community andwillworkwith thecity to ensure the service is maintained.“The installation of this facility was done
in full consultation with the community le-adership and theMakeleni, who assisted inidentifying its location.”The installation of the new ablution faci-
lity was possible because the land is city-owned and the topography of the area ma-kes it feasible for infrastructure.

When the authorities arrived at a house inKings Road in Brooklyn, their suspicionswere vindicated.People started throwing cellphones out of
the windows of the premises.Maitland police spokesperson,W/OSiya-
bulela Vukubi, says that this “suspiciousactivity” was all they needed to enter thehouse. After an elaborate search they arrested
five suspects (of which four are Nigeriannationals) for fraud.“Last week Wednesday at approximately
11:40 our crime prevention unit was alertedby a member of the public that somethingsuspicious was going on at the house. Wesearched the house and discovered two lap-tops, 12 cellphones, four Neotel cellphones, various documents with ID numbers andbank details belonging to different people. When accessing the laptops we saw letter-
heads of different companies and organisa-tions as well as proof of payment emails.”Five suspects aged between 26 and 32
were arrested for fraud and will appear be-fore theCapeTownMagistrate’sCourt oncethey are formally charged. The investigation is continuing full
steam.Vukubi also adds that it doesn’t matter
if one throws items away such as cell-phones before the police make their move– provided that the authorities see thishappening.“We will make a statement in which we
report seeing this, so them throwing cell-phones out of their windows achieved verylittle,” he explains.Hardly a week goes by that a Maitland or
Brooklyn community member’s tip-offdoesn’t lead to an arrest.Vukubi has been quoted numerous times
where he sends out his appreciation to “theeyes and the ears of the police”.

Diamonds for a match: McCallagh’s Band set the tone for guests who attended TheSunflower Fund’s Denim and Diamond event recently. The highlight of the evening, however, was a lucky draw of a diamond pendant donated by Jewel Africa and won by Laura Piggott. All proceeds from this event will be used to recruit new donors to grow the SA Bone MarrowRegistry giving those young patients and adults diagnosed with leukaemia hope and a chanceto find their lifesaving match. Here are Geoff and Lynne Earl with Richard and Gina Crow.

The McBride family of Plattek-loof would like to give specialthanks to the SAPS Bellville/Parow.The response by SAPS
during a recent home invasionby three armed men wasfantastic. Despite the need forthem to handle the officialwork such as police reports, etc. they managed to make usfeel secure and sympathisedwith us.They were also extremely
efficient at coordinating thecrime photographer, finger-print expert and traumacounsellor shortly after theincident. All of this occurred after

guns in my wife’s and my facesas we pulled into our garagebefore the electronic gates andgarage door could be closed. They then forced us into the
house where they found mydaughter and held a gun to herhead too. They then proceededto ransack our house continual-ly threatening death and injuryto keep us co-operating. We aregrateful that we escaped withour lives and no physicalinjuries. The loss of possessions is
meaningless as we continue totry and cope with the mentalscars. In the days after theincident, the SAPS dropped byregularly to update us on theinvestigation and check on ourwelfare. In these times, the SAPS is
often criticised for incompe-tence. I would like to assureeveryone that our experiencecertainly proves the opposite. We would like to thank allSAPS officers, and with specialthanks to: Brig Govender, ColAnthony, Capt Smit, Sgt duToit, Det Const Mabongo, ConstSolomons and trauma counsel-lor Amelia.

Having moved to Cape Townrecently I was used to theappalling standards of thelicensing department of Sand-ton, and dreaded my trips thereto change ownership papersand get new number plates.Although these tasks meant a
total of four trips to the Milner-ton office, not once did I havereason to be anything otherthan impressed with the wayeverything was handled. The offices are clean, the
queues move quickly as every-thing is properly marked, thestaff are all informative andefficient, things work (like faxmachines), and forms one needsto complete are available. There is an air of calm, and
efficiency, and the last time, the lady who served me had asense of humour.Perhaps you would say that

span eerste) is: Durbanville/Bellville t Bel-har; Helderberg t Bellville; Valsbaai t NNK;Kuilsrivier t Hands & Heart; Goodwood tBrackenfell; UWK t Primrose.
