To commemorate Deaf Awareness Weekthe Carel Du Toit Centre in Parow helda Celebrate Your Child Day on Wednes-day.
The centre’s aim is to teach deaf childrenand children with language problems tospeak so that they can function optimally ina hearing world. On the dayparents ofmore than 100 pupils
were invited to the school where they spentthe day interacting with their children. The children and parents were treated to
a day filled with magic and loads of fun acti-vities at the centre, which is situated on thepremises of the Tygerberg Hospital.“This day was also to celebrate how uni-
que each student is,” says Ann-Marie Goli-ath, a special needs educator.“It’s important to have this day so that pa-
rents can bond with their child without anyinterruptions.“Most of the children are profoundly deaf
and the parents and staff dedicate a lot of ti-me to ensure their needs are taken care of,so days like this are important to just relaxfor a while.”She says the children thoroughly enjoyed
themagic show from the students of the Col-lege of Magic as well as the tricks from Ta-bang – the mime. She says they are also exhilarated that
they had perfect weather and the familiescould also enjoy a picnic on the day.Childrenwith hearing ailments attend the
centre from the age of two until the age of10. The children come from various areassuch as Khayelitsha, northern and southern
suburbs as well as Somerset West.“Once the students are ready to leave, so-
me go into a mainstream schools if they areready while others will go into another spe-cial needs school,” Goliath added.“At Carel Du Toit the children get what
they need. We all love the children as if theyare our own. It’s not just a job tous, it’s passi-on.”The centre thanks Pick n Pay Boston, the
College of Magic, Chad Finnley and Tabang– themime for participating and sponsoringthe event.

. From page 1.Of the 1 469 murders 921 prosecutions
were finalised, and 174 convictions were se-cured.Thismeans that over a five-yearperiodon-
ly 11,8 % of the murder cases have seensomeone convicted for their crimes. While Plato has announced plans to bring
up this conviction rate there are people inthe community who feel that the time hascome forhim to research the root of the prob-lem that has destroyed our communities.“Plato has good intentions, but he must
look at what started the rot,” said MohamedOckers, from Elsies River.“I grewup inBellville South, lived inBish-
op Lavis and know what I am talking aboutwhen I say that our communities were poorbut beautiful gardens where our childrenwere strong in their fight for a better life.“All these communities produced strong
leaders in business and other fields despitepoverty and unemployment.“Yes, there was crime and some gangsters
but they were in the minority. If you goaround today they are in the majority.”A friend of Ockers, Joey Ariefdien, from
Blue Downs, agreed with these sentimentspointing out that since the end of apartheid,
in the late 80s there had been a concerted ef-fort in pop culture to glamourise gangster-ism.“When it started happening we knew that
something was wrong but we did not sayanything,” he said.“The radios and television started push-
ingmore gangster culture into the limelight, and it just kept growing out of control.“Today we are seeing the results of that
brainwashing and its effects are being feltin all communities. Its not just in the poorercommunities that the gangs have started op-erating.“Our children do not understand the cul-
ture that was the foundation for many of usfrom the ghettoes. We looked up to positiverole models in arts and culture, as well asin our neighbourhoods.“Teachers, artists and other intellectuals
were honoured and respected. Nowadaysour children are taught, through pop cul-ture, to sneer at these attributes.”Ockers concluded by saying that our com-
munities were still gardens where beautifulplants were waiting to flourish.“The soil is still the same, like it was for
all of us. Plato if you want to make a differ-ence take out the weeds by the roots.”

Unemployed people in the com-munityareencounteringnewbe-ginningsata skillsproject inBel-har.
The New Beginnings Develop-ment Centre was started in 2006 inWoodstock, but earlier this year itrelocated to Belhar where skillstraining is taking off in the area andsurrounding communities.Heading the project is Claudia
Crowster who said that initiallythey only offered three courses,Home Management, Frailcare and
Homecare, aswell as a course inEd-ucare, but since opening in Belharthey have added Office Admin andHairdressing.“Both these courses run over six
months and include 14 weeks ofpractical on the job training,” shesaid.“The centre aims to train and de-
velop unemployed individuals byoffering themboth life skills and jobskills and then supports graduatedstudents to find employment. Wehave been very successful and canproudly say that 80 % of our stu-dents are currently employed.”Crowster explained that starting
this initiative was not just aboutnewbeginnings for theunemployedin the community but also for heron a very personal level.“I was working in human re-
sources, married to a Baptist pastorand in many ways living the dreamlife,” she explained.“While I had all the perks and sta-
tus that goes with the job, my in-volvement in the church alwaysgave me a sense that there is morethat I must do.“I always felt that the church
needed to do more than just look af-ter people’s spiritual needs. OneSunday we drove from our church
and there was a homeless girl sit-ting in the park.“Shehad just been in churchwith
me. Itwas rainingquite heavily andshe was just sitting there, lookingso lost. Again, I strongly felt that itwas not enough to only talk to peo-ple about eternal salvation whiletheir desperate life circumstancesremain unchanged in the present.“I thought to myself, if only the
church could assist in providingskills that would enable people toearn a living, and slowly I becameconvinced that it was me thatshould be providing those skills.”The rest as they say is a history
of inspiration and dedication as shewent about setting up her dream.“It was not easy, but I had a fami-
ly that believed in what I wanted todo and theywere prepared to acceptthe sacrifices that camewith givingup my job.“Once I knew what it was that I
was supposed to do, I rememberedthis organisation, Bergzicht Train-ing in Stellenbosch – they offeredskills training and that was thestart of this project.”For further information about
the centre, Crowster can be contact-ed on 076 047 3045 or 021 952 9801 dur-ing office hours.

Volgens Leon was hy geweldig geëerd toe

kurrikulum in.

liks as gevolg van swakkerige verdedigingmet 14-64 vasgeval teen Hamiltons.
Die komende naweek se program (tuis-span eerste) is: Belhar t Schotsche Kloof/Walmer, Tygerberg t Universiteit Kaapstad,Goodwood t Noordelikes/Northlink-kolle-ge, Bellville t Helderberg, Collegians tHands & Heart.
