According to Lieutenant Kevin Williams of the Parow police, the incident took place shortly after 09:00 when the Standard Bank ATM was being loaded with cannisters filled with cash. “Four unknown men ap- proached the guard while he was taking out and loading the cash into the ATM. One suspect came out of the su- permarket and another came from outside towards him while he was busy,” Williams says. CCTV footage from the in- side of a nearby pharmacy shows one man with a fire- arm approaching the ATM from the Pick n Pay side, and pharmacy clients running back into the shop as the armed man approaches. Knitting is a pastime enjoyed by thousandsaround the world, and recently the clientsat the Stikland Hospital’s OccupationalTherapy (OT) ward have been bitten by the‘knitting bug’ too.The Ward 14 clients look forward to their
weekly sessions from Monday to Friday, when the team meets at 14:00 sharp withtheir needles and wool to do what they lovebest: knitting.Managed by Angelica Matthys, Occupa-
tional Therapy technician at Stikland Hos-pital, theknitting sessions provide the facil-ity’s clients with the opportunity to openlyinteract with each other, reflecting on theirpast activities and family life.Matthys says besides the obvious advan-
tage of creating useful articles andgarments, knitting also has a host of physi-cal and psychological benefits.“Once a client has mastered the skill of
knitting, the movement becomes rhythmicand repetitive. This elicits a relaxation re-action, in which the client’s levels of stress, heart rate and blood pressure declines, and
normalising his or her breathing.“Other benefits include the improvement
of finemotor skills, while keeping themindactive and engaged,” says Matthys. The group, lovingly known as the Golden
Angels, recently took part in an initiativeto knit a range of articles and garments forthe Kangaroo Babies programme at Tyger-berg Hospital..Apart from this, the teamalso knitted bed
socks, beanies and scarves for the older pa-tients at the facility.
“This deed of kindness definitely im-proved the patients’ motivation and self-worth,” says Matthys.
Apart from knitting, the OTward also of-fers other client programmes such as craftactivities for clients, comprising of baking, playing games and watching movies, aswell as a book and pillow project.Other activities include Psych Social Re-
hab, which focuses on developing clients’emotional, social and intellectual skills, allof which they require to live, learn andwork in their communities.

On that particularMonday, Rista was strugglingto keep her doggies undercontrol as the wind washowling, and the heavy woodengates which she was trying toopen, were being blown backand forth. The dogs, who werevery excited and happy to seeher, arriving home after work, would usually jump in her carafter greeting her at the gates, and be driven into the yard.Because of Rista’s delay inopening the gates, Mayanoticed the couple walkingtheir dog, and ran over tomake friends, as theysometimes do. Rista kept hereye on Maya. By this time herother dog, Tiger, was alreadyin the car. Suddenly Rista sawMaya being hit with full force, and falling writhing andwimpering on the ground. SLICE OF LIFE

Receiving the hepatitis B vaccine at birthcould prevent transmission of this deadlydisease between mother and baby. InSouth Africa, however, and many othersub-Saharan countries, the vaccine is onlyadministered to infants at six weeks old, leaving the infant vulnerable to infection.A 2010 study by Stellenbosch University
(SU) researchers confirmed thatHBV is be-ing transmitted from HIV-positive moth-ers to their newborn babies. “Our studyshowed thatHIV-infected pregnantwomenhave high HBV viral loads and are at riskof vertical transmission to their newborninfants despite the availability of a safe, cheap and effective vaccine,” says DrMon-ique Andersson, head of the Viral Hepati-
tis Research Group at SU’s medical virolo-gy division. “Despite the World Health Or-ganisation’s (WHO) recommendation toadminister the first dose of HBV vaccineat birth, most African countries only giveit at six weeks of age, leaving the newborninfant susceptible to infection”Her research group advocates for the
vaccine to be brought closer to the time ofbirth to reduce the risk of perinatal infec-tion. More than 2.5 million South Africansare estimated to have chronic HBV, an in-fection that can lead to scarring (cirrhosis)of the liver, or cancer. An estimated240 million worldwide are affected by it.Chronic HBV infection is among the
most common causes of cancer mortality
worldwide, with young black men beingdisproportionately affected.Andersson and her team are currently
studying the role of HIV in HBV infectionand investigating patients’ immune re-sponse to determine whether co-infectionwith HBV and HIV is a risk factor for in-creased development of liver fibrosis. TheViral Hepatitis Research Group is alsoworking on developing a feasible point-of-care test for viral hepatitis B and C.She says the disease can be eliminated
and 4000 lives can be saved around theworld per day. Members of the public areasked tohelp raise awareness of viral hepa-titis by using the hashtag #4000voices tocall for action.

D’ville Primary golfers end up tops
The victorious golfers from Durbanville from left: Max Orgovanyi, Louis Loubser, Aiden Senger andTravis Proctor.
Debutants Durbanville Primary Schoolcelebrated a roaring eight stroke victo-ry in the fifth Ernie Els Primary
Schools Championship after denying CurroAurora repeat success at the Fish River SunCountry Club recently.
Ayden Senger (74), Louis Loubser (75) andMax Orgovanvyi (83) enjoyed a great ope-ning partnership of 232 that put DurbanvillePrimary School in pole position in their firstappearance at the premier annual juniorteam event.
Loubser returned a 76, Senger carded a 77and Orgovanyi posted another 83 for a finalround 236 to secure victory on 468.
“We are so happy and so proud of theteam,” said coach and team manager LanaOrgovanyi.
“We sat with Curro Aurora at dinner du-ring the opening ceremony and the trophywas on the table. I pointed to the trophy andtold the players that this is what we cameto play for and it was up to them if we wouldtake the trophy home.
Historic moment for school“They all came to the party in a big way.
Even when they struggled at times, theyplayed with great determination and com-mitment and I am incredibly pleased forthem.
“It is such an honour for the primaryschools around South Africa to compete inan event of this nature, sponsored by one ofthe biggest heroes in South African golf. This is a historic moment for the school and
I am sure we will enjoy this moment for along time.”
Carl Mwale helped Curro Aurora to se-cond place with an opening 69 and the 13-ye-ar-old Roodepoort golfer wielded his two-bar
Onyx for a 71 in the final round to win theIndividual Competition by two strokes fromSt. Johns Prep’s Kian Rose 74 68.
Mwale’s team mate Kieron van Wyk fireda 69 and Kim Turgut added 93 for 233 to keepCurro Aurora in second on 478.
Rose’s low round of the tournament hel-ped St. Johns Prep to third on 483 and Selbor-ne Primary School finished in fourth on 486.
Developing the game and young golfers“This marked the fifth year that the cham-
pionship was sponsored by four-time Majorwinner Ernie Els and presented under theauspices of the South African Golf Associati-on (SAGA),” said SAGA Golf Integration Ma-nager, Eden Thompson.
“This tournament is an extension of thegreat work that is being done in developingthe game among junior golfers in South Afri-ca. We are very pleased that all the unionsparticipate in the qualifying process for theErnie Els Primary Schools Championshipand delighted that championship continuesto draw such incredible interest and is sowell supported.
“It is just fantastic to see how healthyjunior golf in South Africa is and we owe agreat debt of gratitude to Ernie for providingthe juniors with a national competitive plat-form such as this.”
Western Province’s Altin van der Merweproduced a pair of eagles to claim a runner-up finish in the final round of the Global Ju-nior Golf Tour’s RB German Junior recent-ly.
The 18-year-old Bellville Golf Club golferopened with a dismal 77 at Golfclub Heidel-berg, but rocketed to third overall with a so-lid two under 70 in round two.
Van der Merwe traded three bogeys forthree birdies in the final round and wipedout a double bogey at the seventh with hisfirst eagle at the par-five eighth.
He holed out for his second eagle at thepar-four 14th to sign off with a 70 to finishtwo strokes behind winner Marcus Hellig-kilde from Denmark.
The Dane took the 36 hole lead with roundsof 73 and 72 and closed with a 70 to triumphon one-under-par 215.
Van der Merwe earned his berth in the in-vitation-only event after he defeated Fin-land’s Ilari Saulo by two strokes to claim theBoys Division in the Curro South Africa Ju-niors International at his home course inMarch.

SAREL BURGER
Stellies rook pyp teen Bellville

Die ander Tygerbergse spanne se program(tuisspan eerste) is: Belhar t SK/Walmer, SirLowrians t UWK, Macassar t NNK, Kuilsri-vier t Hamlets, Rangers t Bellville, Hands &Heart t Franschhoek.
