“Why should the residents be subjected tosuch an unsightly view? This allow easy ac-cess to criminal elements and the possibleabduction of a child.”According to Van Loggerenberg, her fa-
ther, whohas apparently discussed the issueof the fence with the school on numerous oc-casions,was told thedepartment iswell awa-re of the problem.
She says they were told the fencing wouldbe repaired or replaced byOctober last year, but when this didn’t happen, her father wastold by the school that there appeared to beno funding to carry it out.The school refuses to answer any ofTyger-
Burger’s questions and referred the newspa-per to the department. Van Loggerenberghas even threatened to take legal action
against the department if the situation isn’taddressed soon. She is concerned for her own safety due
to the “undesirables” living on school pro-perty at night, but her biggest concern is thesafety of the children. The anonymous source at the school insis-
ted vagrants do not use the school as a safeharbour at night.

If you are very quiet youmight seemyhag-gard figure in Die Damhuis storeroom. But I died over 200 years ago.
I am told Paranormal Research Investiga-tors of Pretoria (PRIP) reckon Die Damhuisrestaurant, the first built structure in Melk-bosstrand, might be haunted by an old wo-man.The PRIP Facebook post was shared by
many a sceptical soul, mostly because theyfind the history of Die Damhuis so interes-ting.So for now my name is not important, but
rather what I have seen. This empty piece of land was given to
Christiaan Brand in 1781 and he and his fa-mily settled here.Die Damhuis, known back then as the Vis-
schuur, was built with stone and plasteredwithamixtureof cowmanure, sandandhay.Master Christiaan hunted whales, and I
remember the day he decided to mix someof the whale bones into the walls.Even today parts of the walls have been
left unplastered for visitors to view thesewhale bones.Fish were originally cleaned, salted and
dried in the Visschuur, which later becameknown as Die Damhuis.
Oh! The tragic tales I can recount! It was a dreary day when the sea claimed
the life of one ofMasterChristiaan’s ten sons. His wife, GesinaMaria, was particularly dis-traught.On occasion I look at the painting in the
restaurant, which depicts that calamitousday. One day in January 1806, a British fleet of
60 ships arrived on the coast.A smaller boat was sent ashore and landed
in front of Die Damhuis, but the Dutch far-mers were waiting behind the sand dunes.Dutch snipers on horseback and British
cannons fired at one another furiously, but
in the end the snipers could not prevent theBritish ships from landing. The invaders took over Die Damhuis for
its dried fish and claimed the adjacent damas a fresh water source. The troops ravaged De Melkbosch and
soon the 9 000 men rounded BlaauwbergHills.Approximately a 1 000 people were killed
during the Battle of Blaauwberg. The defenders surrendered and a treaty
was signed under a tree in Woodstock. So many things have happened in and
around my final resting place (or perhapsI should say my final manifesting place?)I haveheard that a book entitledDieDam-
huis – resepte en herinneringe aan ’n huis, written by Dirk en Reinet Nagtegaal andStefanMeintjes, will be published later thisyear. Perhaps the authors will dedicate achapter to me?

Chevron refines safetyThe Chevron Cape Town Refinery, situa-ted in Milnerton will undergo one of itsbiggest routine maintenance and safetyinspection from 13 February until March.
Maintenance and safety inspections arecarried out annually to maintain the highsafety and reliable operation standardsthat are continually practiced at the refi-nery. Supply constraints are carefully mi-tigated through the building up of strate-gic fuel supplies in the period leading upto the planned maintenance and safety in-spection.
“Investing in the maintenance of the re-finery ensures adequate product supplyacross all our markets,” says Doug Potten-ger, general manager at the Chevron CapeTown Refinery.
“This year, Chevron will invest approx-imately R412 million, the majority ofwhich will be directly injected into theWestern Cape economy. Furthermore, ap-proximately 3 000 additional contractorsare employed during this safety inspecti-on and maintenance period, including ar-tisans, semi-skilled and unskilled wor-kers.”
The refinery contributes substantiallyto the Western Cape and the national eco-nomy through the disbursement of its an-nual capital and operational expenditurebudgets.
According to an independent economicimpact report conducted by Econex, therefinery procures some R2 billion worthof goods and services annually, of which70% are from the Western Cape. Further-
more, 3.3% of the Wes-tern Cape’s GDP and2.4% of employment inthe province can be tra-ced back to the ripple ef-fects of Chevron’s ope-rations in the WesternCape.
A recent significantcapital investment atthe Chevron Cape TownRefinery has been theconstruction of a multi-point ground flare and anew 100 metre elevatedflare to replace the refi-nery’s existing high-level flare. This is aR450 million investment which has resul-ted in employment for 500 local residents.
“The ground flare is of world class tech-nology and forms part of Chevron’s conti-nued efforts to minimise the refinery’s en-vironmental footprint and together withthe new elevated flare, will improve therefinery’s operational efficiencies,” saysPottenger, before adding that since theground flare was successfully installed inNovember 2014 there has been a very noti-ceable reduction in noise emissions fromthe refinery.
The new elevated flare, which will beapproximately 50 metres higher than theexisting elevated flare, is at an advancedstage of construction. This flare will workhand-in-hand with the ground flare.
The maintenance and safety inspectionwill involve safely shutting down all pro-
duction units, with the ex-ception of a number stora-ge tanks which will be usedto manage the supply ofproducts.
“Chevron has made con-tingency plans to mitigatepotential constraints onthe supply of fuel throug-hout the maintenance andsafety inspection period,”says Pottenger.
During this period com-munities situated near therefinery may notice incre-ased noise levels as well as
occasional visible flaring and stack emis-sions (black smoke) over the first fourdays and then again, as operations are re-sumed.
“We have made every effort to ensureactivities that result in increased noise le-vels are kept to a minimum. Furthermore,Chevron places the highest priority on thehealth and safety of its employees and thecommunities in which it operates. We ta-ke every possible precaution to mitigateunnecessary or unplanned emissions.Ambient air quality monitoring aroundthe refinery will continue as normal du-ring this period,” concludes Pottenger.
V Local businesses and surrounding communitymembers who would like further information relating to the scheduled inspection and maintenance can contact Donna Fata at Chevron on021 508 3911 or SMS Info to 30786.

Rugby residents meetThe Brooklyn, Ysterplaat, Rugby Residents’Association’s monthly meeting will be heldtomorrow (Thursday, 5 February) atYsterplaat Primary School.V Please call 073 107 6591 or email byr[email protected] for more information. Great excitement was felt when the
ward 5 Community Food Garden hadits first harvest.
This is a project Bothasig and Edgemeadward councillor Helen Carstens has pilotedsince before her election. The communitygarden is situated at the Bothasig Clinic inDe Grendel Avenue. The project began withthe assistance of several community-basedorganisations, including the BothasigHealth Forum, Bothasig Scouts and LionsClub De Grendel.
Assistance in the groundwork of diggingwas offered by the department of correctio-nal services and the City of Cape Town’s de-partments of social development and agri-culture donated seedlings and equipment.
“The success of the garden is due to thehardwork thevolunteershaveput inby ten-ding to the vegetables and providing the all-important watering that is a must for thegrowth. Advantages of such projects arethat under-utilised spaces can be turned in-to quality spaces delivering a healthy life-style while at the same time providing foodsecurity and entrepreneurship spin-offs,”said Carstens.
Carstens says any resident can be a partof the project to learn more about urban
agriculture so that they can start their ownvegetable gardens at home. “The first har-vest came upon us rather quickly and muchof the produce was taken to Kent Durr reti-rement village at Bothasig Gardens for dis-tribution.
“For the next harvest we plan on havinga market day at the food garden by the cli-nic where residents will have the opportu-nity to purchase fresh produce packs at ex-tremely affordable prices. Funds raisedwill initially be used to put back in the gar-den. We will also, down the line, be lookingat hiring a part-time caretaker to keep aneye on the garden. It is my wish thatthrough this community food garden, thevalue of food can extend beyond the imme-diate need for food, to the support and deve-lopment of skills that empower and subse-quently reverse the need for dependency.”
According to her, residents can choosehow they would like to be involved in theproject, by donating seedlings or by tendingto a patch or learning more about urbanagriculture.VTo become involved with the Community FoodGarden project, contact the Bothasig Health Forum,Glenda Hon 083 676 6376 or Carstens on 021 5596073.

Proposed regulations to clamp down on“illegal modifications and illegal
racers” has met with strong opposi-tion.Thenewregulation to be added to theTraf-
fic Regulations Act, made public two weeksago, seeks to “impose stricter fines on illegalracers and cars that are modified”, says amedia release.Meanwhile City of Cape Town safety and
security mayco member JP Smith said histeam will impose stricter fines on driversfound guilty of taking part in illegal races. However, he said media reports law en-
forcement will “target drivers of modifiedvehicles” are “worryingly inaccurate”.“For the record, the City’s Traffic Service
is mandated to enforce the provisions of theNational Road Traffic Act No. 93 of 1996.[This is] a national piece of legislationwhichstates anymodification of or tamperingwitha vehicle’s safety design renders the vehicle
unroadworthyunless it is done by themanu-facturer ora registeredbodybuilder,” Smithsays.
Driving in fearBut car enthusiasts and the after-market
industry want clarity on what this regula-tion will mean in practical terms.Cape TownCar Enthusiasts (CTCE) repre-
sentative Kersten Greybe says confusionhas many motorists driving in fear.“People are scared to even just drive their
cars to the corner shops since the announce-ment. Nobody knowswhat is happening andno answers have been given and we need toknow exactly what this means for the CapeTown car culture,” she says. She agrees it is good to clamp down on ille-
gal racing as it “endangers the car culturein the province”. “Clamping down on illegalracers I can understand as they are a hazardon the road. But to paint everybody with thesame brush is horribly unfair.”She adds that manymotorists take part in
events at Killarney Raceway, but immedi-
ately after events “we find ourselves in aroadblock, just outside the venue. What isthe point of practising your sport legally butyou’re victimised anyway?”She started an online petition to prevent
the proposed regulation being passed andhas so far gathered 20 000 signatures.“We want our voices to be heard. For too
long we have been underdogs and we havenow decided to educate ourselves with re-gard to the proposed [regulation]. We aren’tartists with canvasses so our masterpiecesare our cars,” she says.
Fear for industryGhost Squad officers have, meanwhile,
been fining drivers of modified vehicles andeven confiscating their car licence discs.Registered tuner shops say they fear the
after-market industry will be under threatshould the bylaw impose stricter laws onanybody with a modified vehicle.Yaseen Abrahams, of CPi Performance In-
novation Cape Town, says they are “highlyconcerned” over the outlawing of carmodifi-
cations.“CPi only engages in legal modification of
cars and ourwork is of the highest standard.Outlawing modifications will have a hugeimpact on the industry. Surely if individualsabide by the law it is their right to modifytheir cars as they wish,” Abrahams says.“CPi acknowledges that many people en-
gage in illegal street racing, but we promoteand support the legal usage of modifiedcars.”The regulations are to be in effect inApril,
but Smith adds the enactment of the regula-tions is the responsibility of the provincialtransport division. “TheCity has lobbied forthe inclusion of impoundment of vehicleswhere owners are caught participating in il-legal street races, steep vehicle release feesto act as a further deterrent, stricter penal-ties for motorists (including prison) espe-cially those who try to evade the law whenconfronted, and suitable penalties for spec-tators at illegal street races to be includedin the Act,” says Smith, who adds fitmentsby registered after-market tuners are legal.

“By geleentheid het ’n ou wat ektwee dae tevore ingeloop het, my by ’n win-kel herken.

It is a pity that Koert Meyer,in his letter of 17 December, makes sweeping statementswith many assumptions.
To write that someone, whobelieves in protecting innocentvictims, ‘seems to have anoutlook of anger, hatred andvengeance’ is pretty presump-tuous.
After I’ve reached out to theSt James attackers and labou-red as a missionary in highrisk areas like the Congo, tohelp the poor and marginali-sed, this is truly a fascinatingidea.
Yes, God does stop evil. ButHe uses men and women onearth to do His will; it does nothappen in a vacuum.
I’ve never argued that ‘wemust all’ carry guns, althoughit is a helpful idea. Let the lawabiding who want to carry, carry.
Jesus told Peter he would becommitting suicide to choose afight in trying to fight soldiers– as well as undermining God’splan to allow Jesus’ death onthe cross and resurrection.
So, Jesus told Peter to puthis sword in its place. Hedidn’t tell Peter to get rid of it.He had earlier ordered thedisciples to arm themselves. The reason for the swords wasto protect the lives of thedisciples, not the life of the Sonof God. Jesus was saying thatit was not the right time for afight.
Meyer appears to haveadopted the pagan fallacy ofanimism – that evil lurks inthings (guns), rather thanpeople. Demonizing inanimateobjects (guns) makes no sense!Guns can be used for good orevil. The heart of the handleris what makes the difference.
The only person, who canstop a bad guy with a gun, is agood guy with a gun. Unarmedvictims are pretty helpless.
I abhor violence i.e. the‘immoral use of force’. Defen-ding the innocent is therighteous use of force. Killing
is the taking of life - murder isthe taking of an ‘innocent’ life.
To label someone a ‘murde-rer’ when he uses lethal forceto protect his family, is incor-rect word usage. Call him a‘hero’.
‘Cowards’ are those who willnot protect their loved onesfrom a murderous thug.
CHARL VAN WYKDurbanville
‘Murder’ and ‘killing’are not the same
I am writing to you with greathappiness and appreciation forthe wonderful public servicewhich a few City traffic officersand members of the SAPSflying squad performed on 29January.
I was attending church inMitchell’s Plain at about 21:00when I received a call that mydaughter’s car broke down onthe notorious R300. One cannothelp but think of the recentincidents of motorists attackedwhile stranded on this road. Itis a sad state of affairs.
My wife logged a call withthe emergency services, and Iam happy to report that theCity’s traffic services and theSAPS flying squad respondedalmost immediately. My familyand I were happy about thisgood public service rendered, asour daughter was alone andstranded far from where wewere at that time.
As a fellow public servant Ihave great appreciation for themen and women in blue whosometimes place themselves atrisk in order to aid others inneed. There may be many whodo not appreciate the emergen-cy services, particularly thepolice and law enforcement, butmy family and I are veryappreciative of the kind deedthey performed for our daugh-ter.
I am aware we cannot rewardthem for doing their duty, butwe want to recognise the greatselfless work they do. As ataxpayer, it makes me proud tosee our taxes being put to gooduse when the emergency
services respond to even minorrequests from the public.
I want to acknowledge a fewofficers in particular whostayed with my daughter untilthe breakdown truck arrived totake her home. Her safety wasour main concern. Our daugh-ter sometimes has to work latedue to newspaper articles to beready for printing at People’sPost based in Tygervalley. Wefeel much more relaxed nowthat we know there are trafficofficers and SAPS memberspatrolling the R300 and canrespond in cases of emergency.
As a family we want torecognise the following officers:
. Sergeant Clifton Botha
. Constable ChristopherLudick
. Constable Leon April
. Traffic officer LorenzoLackay
. Traffic officer Glen OppelThese officers also ensured
traffic flow was unhindered andsafe for all when the car wasrecovered by the breakdowntruck. The whole activity was asuccess because of their helpand assistance. Thank you onceagain!

SLICE OF LIFE
Is mensdomregtig beter afas in verlede?
Dít laat ’n mens soms wonder of onsregtig beter af is as in die verlede?

gevaar in Bellville se eerste beurt.
– (Sarel Burger)

With Formula 1 and F2 cars joininga list of many of the great racers ofthe past involved in the internatio-
nal Passion for Speed meeting at Killarneyon Saturday, the level of excitement is pal-pable.
Pride of place amongthe single seaters be-longs to the ex-JodyScheckter F1 TyrrellCosworth V8 that car-ried the South African tovictory in the Britishand Swedish GrandsPrix in 1974. Other carsin the contingent includethe ex-Sam Tingle F1 Repco LDS as well asan F2 Team Gunston Chevron and a Formu-la Atlantic March/Ford 78B. While not offi-cially racing, the cars are going to completea series of high speed demo laps.
Prominent entries include a pair of LolaT-70 V8’s, several Ford GT 40’s and almostas many Chevron B8’s and B19’s, a Porsche917 replica, an E-Type Jaguar and an extre-mely rare single seater Cooper Maserati. AFerrari 430 and an Audi X-Bow are amongthe hot modern entries in the Extreme Su-percar events.
Among the drivers, Sarel van der Merwereturns in his seven-litre Ford Galaxie, re-putedly now faster than before, while vete-ran Larry Wilford will be seen in a similar-ly powered Ford Fairlane.
But while the bikers include formerworld champion Jim Redman and multipleIsle of Man TT winner Mick Grant, local in-terest is certain to be centred on TableView’s Danie Maritz. The colourful “Danievan Killarney” has entered a Suzuki GSX-Ragainst over 30 top riders in the Isle of ManTT events.
The meeting is rapidly acquiring a nostal-
gic carnival atmosphere as more static his-toric events are added to the programme atno extra cost to the public. These includea Classic Car Show featuring many of thegreat - but now, sadly rare - road and sportscars of the past, which is being organizedby the Cape Jaguar Club on a section of the
infield adjacent to theirclubhouse. Naturallythere is going to be a dis-play of historic Jaguars,as well as GSM Darts,Flamingo GT’s and a va-riety of other models. The clubhouse facili-ties, including the braaifires, will be available toeveryone.
There will be Fan Walk during the lunchbreak that will include the entries in the Le-gends of the nine-Hour events, as well as theClassic and TT motorcycle events. Theywill be on a section of the track around theRose Sweep (Turn 3) and towards the Mal-mesbury Sweep (Turn 4).
