hy of sy is ingeloop,” sê Van Niekerk. Hysê tot dusver is ’n reeks sulke gevalle in dieKuilsrivier-polisiegebied aangemeld.“Die betrokkemisdadigers sit egter in Jo-
hannesburg,” vertel hy.

net Huis Jabes kanbied.
“Nadat hul gesta-biliseer is, word hul-le by programme in-geskakel om hul self-vertroue enmenswaardigheid opte bou. Hul verbeterhul ouerskapsvaar-dighede, bekom ’n in-
Nearly 12 weeks have passed since theshooting incident in which twoMcDonald’s staff members died.
The investigation is complete, howeverno arrests have been made and it’s still un-clear who will be held responsible for thedeath of the two young workers.
McDonald’s staff Noxolo Skota and XolisaTshabe were passengers in a Toyota Quan-tum minibus transporting them home fromwork on Monday 14 March when officers ofdifferent police units opened fire on the ve-hicle, fatally wounding them. About 20shots were fired and pathologists confirmedthat both Skota and Tshabe died as a resultof multiple gunshot wounds.
The incident was labelled a case of “mis-taken identity”.
Soon after the incident the IndependentPolice Investigative Directorate (Ipid) con-firmed that police officers had mistaken thevehicle for one used by a group of armedrobbers who had robbed a fuel service sta-tion in Grove Street, Kuils River earlier thatmorning.
The deceased were laid to rest days afterthe incident which rocked both the KuilsRiver and Mfuleni communities where they
worked and lived.Last week Ipid spokesperson Robbie Ra-
burabu said the investigation had beencompleted and all statements obtained.
“The only outstanding things are some ofthe technical reports that are still to be ob-tained before any recommendations can bemade,” Raburabu said.
On Friday provincial police spokesper-son Captain Frederick van Wyk said therewere no developments to be reported on.

I read the article “Laat ge-stremdes se parkeerplekkeoop”, TB, 18 May, with greatinterest, and agree wholeheart-edly that the fraudulent use ofdisabled parking bays must bepunished and the drivers finedheavily.I am a healthy, able-bodied
59-year-old. My husband and Imoved to Durbanville about ayear ago, with my 87-year-oldmother who suffers fromsevere osteoporosis, and canonly walk if she wears a backbrace, uses her walking stickand uses a shop basket trolleyfor support. She does not need to go out
often, as we provide all herneeds, but every now and then,it’s just nice to see the worldoutside her room, and this isnever for long, as she tiresquickly. On recommendation of our
doctor, we applied for adisabled parking disc when westill lived on the AtlanticSeaboard, and were granted ittwice. Her last licence expiredin March of this year, and wehave stopped using it, for fearof getting a fine. A newapplication was made at theDurbanville Traffic Depart-ment. We complied with allrequested documents, but ourapplication was denied. Thereason given that old age isnot a disability, and, since thedoctor stated that she can getin and out of the car unaided, was reason enough not togrant this disc.I was shocked and disap-
pointed. My mother gave updriving her own car some fiveyears ago, due to failingeyesight and troubles with herback: she battles to reversepark and very sensibly feelsthat she should no longerdrive. Thanks to the TrafficDepartment, she will now seeeven less of our new andbeautiful surroundings. We areall so very happy on this sideof “the boerewors-gordyn” butthis left us all bitterly disap-

Recently the Voortrekker RoadCorridor Improvement District(VRCID) advertised a vacantpost in TygerBurger. Via thisletter I would like to give somesound advice to potential jobseekers on how to apply for ajob and make an impression onthe potential employer.First of all, read the require-
ments of the post. If it says thatyou must not submit more thanfive pages, do not submit sixpages for example. By doingthis it means you are notfollowing the set requirements.Secondly, do not attach
certificates, copy of ID or anyother documentation if theadvert clearly says you shouldnot. Thirdly, if you are asked tosend a motivation letter, do notsend out a generic letter;employees see through this andshow that applicants did not doresearch.Lastly, ensure that there are
no spelling or grammaticalmistakes in your CV andmotivation letter; this showsthat you did not read throughyour application or you are notserious in your application. From the 44 applications we
received, almost 80% weredisqualified because the appli-cants did not follow the instruc-tions in the advertisement.

As the popularity of social media sitesand chat groups continues to grow, experts have warned parents to be
aware of a growing trend in cyberbullying.Speaking to parents during a recent pub-
lic meeting in Table View, Evan Booyens ofDa Vinci Forensics explains cyberbullyingis when someone uses the internet, cell-phones and other technological devices tosend or post text or images intended to hurt, embarrass, threaten, torment, humiliate orintimidate their victim. He says while cyberbullying is rampant
in countries like America, leading to vari-ous emotional problems in teens and insome cases suicide, South African teenswere slowly starting to feel the impact. Sim-ilar to the old fashioned form of bullying,Booyens explains various tactics such asgossip, threats and trickery are used amongchildren. However when online these tac-tics are amplified as the bullies can now tor-ment others anonymously. In the online space, he says, new tactics
are used andmost disturbing is the creationof fake social media profiles. Here the bullycreates a Facebook page or any other formof social media account and poses as theirvictim, placing embarrassing or false posts. In South Africa the most commonly used
social media site is Facebook and Booyenssays in most cases girls are the perpetra-tors.“There are various reasons children do
this. They include revenge, power, enter-tainment, stupidity or problems at home.”Booyens says the effects on the victim
range from sadness and anxiety to depres-sion, anger and in some cases, suicide. So why is cyberbullying so hurtful? Be-
cause in a digital age, bullying is not fleet-ing. Booyens explains at the top of the list
is the permanence of a hurtful post on socialmedia. Here the insults, comments or imag-es can be preserved by the person who wasbullied or others and others can read orview it again and the harm is reinflictedeach time. Another downfall is that with so-cial media sites, the bully now has a biggeraudience than just a school hallway or lock-er room. This, Booyens says, the amount of people
able to view the damagingmaterial increas-es the victim’s humiliation.Booyens also says the speed at which
harmful messages can reach large audien-ces also plays amajor part inmaking cyber-bullying so damaging.According to international studies, 92.6%
of teens say cruel behaviour takes place onFacebook. Booyens says those same studiesindicate that 65.8% of teens responded totheir bullies of which 35% where personalconfrontations.“The stats show that 15.4% of children
avoided school and 4.5% of them have beenin a physical fight with their bully. What isinteresting, is that of those teens only 10%of parents were aware of what their teenwas going through.”Booyens says while South African teens
were not as hard hit by cyberbullying, it’simportant for parents to be aware of the po-tential dangers.“It won’t take that long for our children
to be hit hard by this and it’s already hap-pening on Facebook. There are some simpleways to help prevent it.”First on the list is for parents tohave their
children’s social media passwords. He sayswhile teenswill complain about their priva-cy being violated, it is important for parentstohaveaccess tomonitor their interactions. He says parents should encourage theirchildren to speak up if they are being bul-lied and should be taught how to block theirbullies from their social media accounts.

Metmeer as veertig jaar indie plaaslike musiekbe-dryf is Dennis East son-
der twyfel een van Suid-Afrikase lewende legendes.Die Dammit I Love You-ster is
Junie vanaf 15:00 in GrandWestse Grand-arena plaas.
grootste treffers soos“Take my Heart” en“Cry to me” asook “AMillion Drums” te sing.“Almal vanhulle sal ’n
Toe hy in 2006 saammet Steve
loop.
Die album sal by sy optredes tekoop wees.
WEN! WEN!

Eight years into the Spur High SchoolsMountain Bike League organisers areanticipating that more than 500 South-
ern African schools will be represented inthe 2016 season, which will run fromMay toOctober.
According to league co-ordinatorMeurantBotha of Amarider, participation at localevents is growing at a steady pace as schoolsaccept mountain biking as a recognisedsport – some going as far as building dedicat-ed tracks on school grounds to encourageafter school practice and interschool sportsdays as well as employing coaches andman-agers to oversee teams.
“The word on the street is that the topteams are in full training mode in prepara-tion for the 2016 season as competition be-comes more intense year on year. To manyriders, it’s not just about hopping onto thebike anymore, but rather honing skills, up-ping the fitness levels and working on themental toughness that is required to followdreams of becoming pro riders,” says Botha.
Although there are many kids findingtheir competitive edge on their bicycles, theSpur Schools Mountain Bike League’s focusis still to encourage “more kids on bikes, more schools in action”. It is important forall children to enjoy participating, whetheronly starting out or having participated fora few seasons. This year has seen the introduction of
Team Spur, James Reid and Ariane Klein-hans, who play the important role of encour-aging league riders to follow their dreamsand showing the reality of becoming spon-sored athletes. Between competing at theirvarious competitions, they have been min-glingwith keen riders, sharing valuable tipsfrom how to better skills to handling pres-sureand formavital part of theSpurSchoolsMTBLeague as they set the tone as rolemod-els for the young riders. For those new to the Spur Schools Moun-
tain Bike League, the league is a programmefocused on growing the number of childrenon mountain bikes by running interschool
mountain biking races around the country. The League consists of 11 South African
regions including neighbouring Africancountries Zimbabwe, Namibia and Lesotho.Around 60 events take place fromMay to theseason-ending national final in Magalies-burg in October.
The racing format takes place onamarkedtrack, generally over school fields and dedi-cated trails, where riders have to completea certain amount of laps of a course that ran-ges between 2km-6km. The distance thatneeds to be covered is in accordance to theSouth African Schools Cycling Associationrules and regulations.

RUGBY: VARSITY SHIELD AWARD
AVRIL FILLIES
To receive the award as the BacklinePlayer that Rocks of the Varsity Shieldwas a bittersweet moment because “we
just lost to Wits” in the promotion-relega-tion play-off.
This is what Aidynn Cupido (19) of Stellen-ridge, Bellville, flyhalf of the University ofthe Western Cape (UWC), said at the end ofthe Varsity Shield competition for 2016. Heplayed as a centre and full-back in all the agegroups of Western Province while a learnerat Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.
“I never saw my dad, Wilfred, play centrefor Western Province and Western Province
League. To me he wasjust my dad and thecoach of the rugbyclub Helderbergand all the differentSevens teams in the
province. But when Istarted my rugby ca-
reer, that fact added extrapressure and I told myselfthat I would be in all repre-sentative teams on meritand not because of my dad.
“I asked my mom, Levona, about my dad’s playing days
and she pulled out a scrap-book of newspaper clippings
and action pictures that shekept when he was playing. Only
then I realised why everyone was puttingpressure on me to perform,” he said.
His parents attended all his matches andhis dad said it was not necessary for himto be a centre, he should play in the posi-tion where he was comfortable and wherehe could add value to the team. That waswhen he switched to fly-half.
“As a fly-half you are the general thatcontrols people around you and you givedirection to the team. As a centre you fol-low directions and carry a lot more ball. The assumption is that anyone can playfly-half because you just receive the ballfrom the scrum-half to kick for territory, but this is way off the mark,” he said.
Cupido studies law at UWC and hopes tosign a contract with one of the provinces.“For the next two years UWC will be play-ing again in the Varsity Shield and we haveenough time to progress from the Shield totake the Varsity Cup. The reason I say thisis that we played against the best universi-ty sides and we discovered that we werejust not on par with them. With the experi-ence that we gained this year we can justbuild on that in the next two years, andthen we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
“Currently I am focussing on my studiesbecause you never know how long yourrugby career would last. When my studiesare done and dusted I would like to opena sports agency to assist young talentedplayers. With my legal background I wouldbe able to help the players,” said Aidynn.
He is coached by former Springboks ChesterWilliams and Bolla Conradie at UWC. Accord-ing to him Bolla is an inspirational coach.
“When I am not playing rugby or studyingI read novels and watch television series withthe family, like NCIS, Blindspot and GordonRamsay. My dad and I talk a lot about rugbybut my mom is more into my academic career.I have two siblings, Ammin (14) who is at PaulRoos and Aimee, who is at Rhenish Girls High.
“My message to young players is that youmust have a goal and you are the only one whocan stop you from achieving that goal,” saidAidynn.
Slegs by vier geleenthede in vanjaar sereeks is minder as 23 doele in ’n wedstrydafgestaan.
