With the new school year starting soon, thecity’s Social Development and Early Child-hood Development Directorate urges par-ents to check that the ECD Centre they enroltheir children in, is registered with theWestern Cape Government’s Department ofSocial Development.
The primary objective of the city’s EarlyChildhood Development (ECD) Departmentis to create awareness about statutory ECDregistration compliance so that parents,Early Childhood Development practition-ers, caregivers and communities are well-informed.
The city’s mayoral committee memberfor social development and early childhooddevelopment, Suzette Little, said parentsshould make sure that the facility their chil-dren are enrolled at, is not just a day-carecentre where their children eat, sleep andplay. The facility needs to offer activitiesthat will stimulate the child’s developmentand must be in a position to assess whetherthey understand the concepts taught tothem.
“These assessments are put in place tomake sure that children understand thelearning concepts which will enhance their
ability to grasp concepts at school,” Littlesaid.
According to her, there are many ECD fa-cilities that remain unregistered as a resultof being unable to fully comply with the re-quirements.

The principal of the independent GoodHope High School in Sarepta, Kuils Riversaid the school’s matric pass rate for 2013was not the result they had expected. The school has a 75 % matric pass rate.“This is not what we envisaged,” Princi-
pal Roland Links said in an interview. He said oneof the contributing factors for
the poor results is the fact that the schoolhad a few foreign learners who struggledwith English. The school had eight foreign matricu-
lants who are originally from Zimbabwe,Angola and Nigeria.“In 2013 we thought we could get close to
85 or even 90 %,” Links said.Asked why this has not been the case,
Links answered: “Wehave foreign studentswho were not able to pass English homelanguage, we had a few English teacherslast year; there was a few transitions andthe students struggled to adapt to the differ-ent teachers.”The school had a total of 63 matriculants
of which 47 passed.“Another reason was the student’s appli-
cation of their attitude going into the exam-inations. Some of the learners were ill pre-pared and there was a lack of motivation.“The teachers expected a 100 %pass rate.
Throughout the year they did their work, here and there we had to struggle with afew children. There were some assign-ments for instance that the students did notcomply with and where we had to rope inthe parents,” Links explained. He said the school’s plan for this year is
to introduce extra classes after school.AshleighMasara (18), amatriculant, said
some of the learners had a relaxed ap-proach towards the examination.“Some did work hard throughout the
year. They knew the work so they felt thatthey were prepared and that brought thework ethic down,” she said.Masara scored three distinctions, a 93 %
for business studies, 84 % for economicsand 83 % for life orientation.“Imissed out on English and am a bit dis-
appointed. My goal was to get at least fivedistinctions,” she explained.Masara who lost her mother five years
ago due to an illness, said her dream is tostudy BCom economics and business sci-ence.“I have applied all over but am still wait-
ing for a response from the tertiary institu-tions. I have also applied for a bursary, butit is difficult for foreigners. I am workinghard on it though,” Masara, who is origi-nally from Zimbabwe said.

Their latest offering, “Drop Top”, fea-tures the voice of Reece Faure, and Dalesays it has more of a summer feel.
The music video was filmed locally andhas already been released. “It highlightslandmarks in Cape Town,” Dale explains.
DirtyFunk say they are nearly done withtheir album and are hoping to release it inJune this year.
“I’m the kind of guy who likes to take mytime,” Dale says, explaining why it’s takenso long to release an album. A wise man recently sent out aheart-filled message, that gotme thinking. In his message heconveyed a very powerfulthought; the science of momen-tum is brought about by thestate of mind you are in at anygiven time.
That state will affect thekind of decisions you willmake and whether or not you

will follow through. As we move into the year
2014, my prayer for all is that,as individuals, you will choosea positive state of mind, be-cause then life becomes beauti-ful and don’t forget to seeyourself as part of the commu-nity. Allow yourself to embraceeach and every God-given dayand always be open to thepower of a giving spirit, for inthat you will experience truefulfilment.
The wise man said: “May weall embrace change and to beable to change anything in life, begin with the simple first stepof changing yourself.”
As you choose a positive stateof mind, and in choosing to bepositive, may you experiencethe success, health and fulfil-ment you desire and deserve in2014.
One last thought: Life is shortand time truly waits for noman, so make your life countfor something, a good start willbe to invest in the life ofanother whether it be in the lifeof love ones or in the life of aperfect stranger.

Bin day in Kraaifontein hasbecome a security threat as faras I am concerned.
We always take our bin up toour security gates and leave thebin on the inside of the gateuntil the waste disposal truckcomes as the digging in thebins just leaves a mess on thestreets.
This morning, I took the binup to the gates as usual andwent back inside. When I wentoutside to throw something elsein my bin all the bags thatwere inside the bin were gone!
That means, that while I wasinside the house, someone cameinto my yard and emptied thebin. What next? If they are noteven bothered entering youryard to get to your bin, whatelse are they able to do while Iam home alone?

SLICE OF LIFE
Maar of hierdie nou ’n perdjaar is ofnie: klim stewig in die saal, kap jouhakke in, and have one helluva ride!

- Anoniem
V Ag nee, manne!

“I play what would be called sort ofneo-folk finger style which involvessome percussive stuff on the guitar
body.”That’s how local singer/songwriter, Dave
Knowles, describes his music.“I’malso a composer and a guitar teacher,
but for the last seven years, I consider thisto be how I express myself,” he adds.“My music, I like to think, has a lot of
soul,” Dave says.He explains that he only writes when he
feels he has something to say, or somethinghe needs to say.“If I have a song that doesn’t quite sit
right in one part, I abandon it,” he pointsout, referring to his compositions. While his songs have elements of blues,
folk and rock,Dave says each song is its ownsound.Dave has been living in Kenilworth in
Cape Town for about two years, after mov-ing from Grahamstown where he was stud-ying music, history and philosophy. Before that, he had travelled with his pre-
vious band to Manchester, England, wherethe band played for a year.“I was in an indie-rock band, round about
the time of Tweak and The Finkelsteins, sowe didn’t exactly fit the localmarket,” Daveexplains.“It was a very amazing and humbling ex-
perience when your realise you are one of4 000 bands that are just as good, if not betterthan you,” he says of his travels with theband.Dave explains he left the band because
while he knew they would be successful, hedidn’t feel it would be on his own terms.“I wanted to know that if we made it, it
was because it was the music I wanted tobe making,” he points out.So Dave got an acoustic guitar andmoved
to clean rooms in backpackers in London.
Dave says while his studies helped himunderstand music theory and composition-al elements, it didn’t teach him how to ex-press.“The way I was expressing was unique to
me and it wasn’t something I was beingtaught,” he explains.Davehas beenworking on an albumatAf-
rican Sun Studios, which he hopes to re-lease in the next few months. “The songsI’ve been performing solo for seven yearsare now going to have an amazing orches-tration,” he says. The album’s tentative name is In Waking
Skin, although Dave says there’s a chanceit could still change. You can catch Dave performing live on 8
February at the Independent ArmchairTheatre in Observatory and The WaitingRoom in Cape Town on 18 February.V For more information about Dave and his upcoming gigs, visit his Facebook page at www.facebook.com/DKnowles.music.V Dave Knowles is on the Orange Couch this week.Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch his performance and interview.
