Invasive wasps are everywhere – this isthe message from northern suburbs resi-dents who have come across the unwelco-

me invaders, just as the City posted a freshwarning about their expansion.

The City’s Early Detection, Rapid Respon-se (EDRR) programme has once more issueda warning to residents of Bellville, Durban-ville, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and KuilsRiver about two invasive species getting

comfortable here and further afield.The culprits are the European paper wasp

(Polistes dominula) and the German wasp,or yellow-jacket (Vespula germanica).

WarningThe city, which issued an initial warning

in October, is concerned the invaders mightmove further inland.

“Given their invasive nature, concern hasarisen that, if these wasps are left uncontrol-led, they may spread to the majority of townsin the Western Cape, and other provinces

where the climate is even more suited totheir dominion,” Ulrike Irlich of the EDRRprogramme said.

Beyond being a nuisance, they can seriouseconomic impact the wine, deciduous fruitand beekeeping industries, she said.

The German wasp in particular is aggres-sive and several cases were reported of farmworkers begin stung.

“They are also known to attack and kill ho-neybees and infiltrate bee hives, which is de-trimental to the honey industry,” she said.

Close to homeCloser to home, the City recently warned

residents in the Kendridge area to be especi-ally mindful of the insects which are knownto aggressively defend its nest and swarmout to attack if disturbed.

“Kenridge seems to be the edge of the dis-tribution of these wasps, as far as we can seeso far. It is thus critical to find nests in theseareas and remove them, in order for us toprevent the wasps from spreading any fur-ther,” she warned.

Geordie Hogarth, chairperson of the Ken-ridge-The Hills Ratepayers’ Association,told TygerBurger his organisation has hada number of complaints thus far, althoughhe personally has not seen any wasps.

“We need to make people aware that theEDRR is prepared to do something about theproblem – free of charge – as soon as peoplecontact them,” he said.

As part of their plan to curb the invaders,the city and the Stellenbosch municipalityhave assembled dedicated, trained teams todeal with the critters, Irlich said.

Some residents shared their experienceswith the insects with TygerBurger.

“My dog is allergic to bees and has beenstung once by these wasps already and start-ed foaming at her mouth,” an Oakdale resi-dent said.

“I have two dogs and am concerned theymight be attacked or the wasps might evenattack my daughter, who sometimes playsoutside,” said another Oakdale resident.

ADeLaHaye resident said: “On topof this,

they are killing (honey)bees every day.”A resident from Brackenfell said: “I will

be very glad if the EDRR could remove thenests because my two-year-old always playsoutside and even when I hang my washing,they come to the line.”

A Kraaifontein resident said: “We movedin to a not well looked after house in BonnieBrae last year in February and a hive wasalready there. The quotes last year for re-moval ranged from R450 to R500.”

V The European paper wasp builds paperynests in wall cavities, under roof eaves andany gaps they can find.

V The German wasp has yellow and blackmarkings on the abdomen, but it has blackantennae.Thewaspsareaggressive andnestin the ground.

V Both are known to sting multiple timesand fly in a direct line. Residents are urgedto pick up food scraps of fruit pieces lyingaround the yard and to leave uneaten pet’sfood outside.

Die dood van ’n sewentiende bejaarde inwo-ner van Huis Serendipity sedert Junie hetnou aan die lig gekom.

Maar Sharon Roberts, eienaar van dié te-huis vir bejaardes in Panorama, sê die 88-jari-ge Lana van Zyl was tegnies nie een van hulinwoners nie, omdat sy vir weke in die hospi-taal was voor sy gesterf het.

“Die dag toe my ma in Panorama-hospitaalopgeneem is, het dit vier ure geneem om haarbedwonde skoon te maak. Die dokter het aanons gesê dit is die ergste geval van verwaarlo-sing van ’n bejaarde wat sy nog by dié hospi-taal gesien het,” sê Linda Burger, Van Zyl sedogter. “Ek het op Saterdagoggend 23 Augus-tus ’n oproep van een van die werkers by dieouetehuis gekry om my te vra of my skoonmase begrafnisgoed reg is, want dit lyk nie of sydit gaan maak nie,” vertel Frank Burger. Hul-le het hom ingelig Van Zyl het hartversaking.

“Ek sê toe vir hulle Ouma moet hospitaal

toe en teen die tyd dat ons van die Paarlaf daar kom, het die ambulans opgedaag.

Sy het verskriklik geruik. Haar eenbeen en voet was vol bedwonde. Haar lig-gaam was deurtrek met septisemie. Symoes twee bloedoortappings kry, sy wasondervoed, gedehidreer. Die vloeistof hetuit haar liggaam geloop. Die dokters wasskepties oor haar toestand. Hulle het gesêom haar lewe te red moes haar been afgesitword, maar sy was te swak.

“In daardie stadium was die been vol-gens die dokter nog net met een tendon aanhaar liggaam geheg. Deel van haar enkelwas weg. Haar liggaam was in ’n erge spas-ma ineengetrek en hulle het vir ons gesêdit lyk asof sy selfs so lank as twee wekein dieselfde posisie gelê het,” sê Linda.

Maar die 88-jarige Lana van Zyl het te-ruggeveg en binne ’n week in die hospitaal,buisvoeding en daaglikse fisioterapie, het

sy haar kleur begin terugkry en gewig beginoptel. Ná drie weke was sy sterk genoeg dathaar been bo die knie kon afgesit word. Diewond het, volgens haar dogter, verbasendgoed herstel. Maar kort daarna het Van Zylvog op haar longe gekry en is sy op 14 Okto-ber aan septiese skok oorlede.

“Ons het die bewerings oor die slegte kosen misbruik van medikasie by Huis Serendi-pity in die koerant gelees, maar ons weetniks daarvan nie. My ma het Alzheimers ge-had en kon nie meer met ons kommunikeernie. Maar ek het nie van die plek gehou nieen ek kon haar nie betyds daar uithaal nie.Ons het elke twee weke by haar gaan kuier,”sê Linda.

Roberts sê dit is nonsens. Volgens haar hetVan Zyl se kinders in die vyf jaar wat sy inSerendipity gewoon het, net ’n paar keerkom kuier en moes sy hulle smeek om pleis-ters vir Van Zyl se wonde te stuur. “Ons konhaar nie hospitaal toe stuur nie, want onskon nie die familie in die hande kry nie.”

Die Burgers sê egter Van Zyl het ’n uitste-kende mediese fonds gehad en Roberts hetdit geweet. “Waaromis syniebeterbehandelnie? Waarom is sy nie vroeër opgeneem nie?Waarom het ons nie van hierdie wonde ge-weet nie?” wil hulle weet.

Inwoners in Suikerbosstraat in Bellvilleword gewaarsku teen ’n groep rowers watglo daarop uit is om motors te kaap.

Só vertel ’n inwoner, Handré Bester, na-dat twee booswigte hom verlede Donderdagin sy oprit aangeval en twee keer met ’n BB-pistool geskiet het.

Handré, ’n spysenier van beroep, was oppad terug van ’n supermark toe hy om 21:15aangeval is.

“Ek het die kar gesien wat laer af in diepad gestop het. Toe ek optrek in my oprit,het hulle te voet opgestap gekom in my rig-ting.

“ ’n Mens neem maar aan dat dit menseis wat na hul eie woning gaan as hulle (voor’n erf) stop. Dit het so vinnig gebeur – diéouens is gevaarlik,” het hy gesê.

Handré vertel sy voordeur was toe en dietwee mans het agter hom gestaan. Toe hetdie een sy hand uitgesteek om Handré sebakkie se sleutel te gryp, maar Handré hetsy hand teruggetrek.

“Hulle het my seergemaak. Die een hetmy met die BB-pistool op my voorkop ge-skiet. Terwyl ek en die ander een gestoeihet, het hymyagter diekopookgeskiet. Toeek besef dis nie ’n regte pistool nie, het ekterugbaklei,” sê hy.

“Ons woon in ’n baie stil area. Ek wil

graag vra dat mense tog moet uitkyk. Diéouens was glad nie eens geïnteresseerd inmy selfoon nie – hulle wou net die bakkiese sleutels hê.” Handré het ’n klag van po-ging tot motorkaping by die Bellville-poli-sie aanhangig gemaak.

Kapt. FienieNimb,woordvoerdervandiépolisiekantoor, het die insident bevestig.Sy sê inwoners moet te alle tye paraat blywanneer hulle by hul oprit inry.

Fencing to curb crimewill be erectedaroundand in a number of streets and neighbour-hoods in Bellville’s ward 3.

Ward 3 councillor Brenden van der Merwesent the scope of the new security fencing toTygerBurger.

He said the new fencing for Wenning Parkis along De la Haye Avenue and is fundedfrom the ward allocations budget.

This is one of six similar fencing projectsplanned for the current financial year, vander Merwe said, including De La Haye, Labi-ance, Groenvallei and La Rochelle.

Spokesperson for the LabianceNeighbourhood Watch, Rean de Necker,

said they were excited to finally have fencing– again.

“There used to be a wire fence runningalong Labiance, but somewhere along the lineit fell away. This caused an immense increasein foot traffic, which in turn saw a rise in cri-me – we’ve had a number of bag snatching in-cidents as well as vehicle break-ins,” he said.

“The criminals run to the railway track –they use it as an escape route. From thewatch’s perspective, if we can just stop thefoot traffic, we are very grateful.”

Rean said they’ve waited about three yearsfor the fencing to go up again.

“There is ahugeneed for the fence,”he said.Adrian Lawerence, chairman of the De La

Haye Neighbourhood Watch, said many sleptin parks and the community was unhappy

about this. We are very pleased about thefencing,” he said.

The planned “security interventions”include fencing at the following streets:

V Wenning Street Park in De La Haye.This spans about 76 m along De la HayeAvenue and includes a pedestrian gate;

V New fencing at Holbein and RaeburnStreet and thewalkwayclosed (approxima-tely 20 m), with one pedestrian gate added;

V At Gainsborough Street the walkwaywill also be closed (from house number 32),stretching for about 13 m and including theaddition of a pedestrian gate;

V In Labiance at Alleyne and Labiancestreets the walkway will be closed and fen-ced for approximately six metres. A pedes-trian gate will be added;

V At Moerdyk and Epstein streets in Labi-ance the walkway will be closed and a pedes-trian gate added. Twenty metres of the fencewill be diamond mesh;

V La Provence and La Rochelle streets willbe closed by fencing the walkway for about13 m. A pedestrian gate is to be added

V Kunene Road in Groenvallei the wal-kway will be closed and a pedestrian gate ofabout 3 m high added.

Dié boodskap het Pierre de Vos,grondwetkenner van die Universi-teit van Kaapstad, verlede Woens-dag tydens die voorlaaste aflewe-ring in die ontbytbesprekingsreeks:“Die Grondwet en goeie openbareleierskap” met afgevaardigdes ge-deel.

Dié bespreking by die Universi-teit Stellenbosch-bestuurskool inBellville is deur adv. Vusi Pikoli,die onlangs aangestelde Wes-Kaap-se polisie-ombudsman, gemodereeren het gefokus op die rol van Arti-kel 9-instellings om die demokrasiete bevorder.

Een van dié organisasies is dieOpenbare Beskermer (OB), tans on-der leiding van Thuli Madonsela.

De Vos meen werklike verande-ring sal slegs plaasvind as die volksy stem dik maak by die stembus, endit nie aan die OB oorlaat om die re-gering verantwoordbaar te hou nie.

“In hoë-profielsake soos (dié van)Nkandla, is dit naïef vir mense omte dink die OB of die menseregte-kommissie of selfs die grondwethofkan werklik verseker dat die rege-ring verantwoordbaar gehou word.

“Ons is almal lui en wil hê die in-stellings moet staatsliggame ver-antwoordelik hou. Die verantwoor-delikheid lê by die stembus,” het De

Vos gesê.Hy het bygevoeg al het die land ’n

gevorderde menseregtehandves,het baie mense glad nie toegang totvan dié regte nie.

Hy het ook gesê mense is geneigom aan Art. 9-instellings te dink niein terme van struktuur nie, “maarin terme van persoonlikhede – soosThuli Madonsela – wat die ‘kampi-oen van die kletterende klasse’ ge-word het,” het De Vos gesê.

“Dié individue word gesien as die‘groot wit hoop’ – dat hulle ons de-mokrasie gaan ‘red’, korrupsie gaanbeveg en alles gaan uitwis wat ver-keerd is. Dit is verkeerd om só tedink,” het hy gesê.

Hy meen die huidige debat oor diewerking van dié instellings beklem-toon eintlik die feit dat Art. 9-instel-

lings op hul beste werk “wanneerdie regering van die dag wil hê ditmoet werk”.

In ’n onlangse hofuitspraak in ’nsaak tussen die DA en die SAUK, hetdie betrokke regter bevind dat be-vindinge van die OB nié bindend isnie, maar ook nie net geïgnoreerkan word nie.

Pikoli het op sy beurt beklemtoondat, hoewel dié instellings ’n baiebelangrike rol het om te speel, hullebeslis nie die land gaan “red” nie.“Ons moet onsself red,” het hy gesê.

Lionel Adendorf, ’n gas en direk-teur van mediabetrekkinge vir diedepartment van vroue, kinders enpersone met gestremdhede, het diegesprek in ’n stadium as ’n “aanvalop die ANC en die huidige regering”beskryf.

“ ’n Algemene draad in alle be-sprekings oor grondwetlikheid isdie walgingwekkende feit dat ditamper almal ANC- en regering-mo-kersessies geraakhet, aangesiendiekwessie wat altyd voorkom, dít isvan die een-party-regering, asookdie aanval op Artikel 9-instellings,”het hy gesê.

Adendorf het gesê die trant vandie bespreking “maak (hom) naar”,soveel so dat hy hoegenaamd nie indie meriete daarvan belangstel nie.

Pikoli het geantwoord dat dít al-lermins die geval was, maar dat diegesprek daaroor gaan dat staatslig-game goed bestuur moet word en diegrondwet beskerm moet bly.

De Vos het gesê: “Dit het níks metdie ANC te doen nie, maar wel hoeregering in ’n demokrasie werk.”

Nadat hy in Augustus 2012 geregistreer is,gaan die Proteavallei-buurtwag van kragtot krag in sy stryd teen misdaad.

Robert de Vries, voorsitter, sê benewensdie eintlike doel om misdaad in die gebiedtebeveg,wasdiemikpuntvandiebuurtwagook om soveel moontlik inwoners te oor-reed om deel te word van die buurtwag. Met’n begin van nét ses lede het die lidmaat-skap gegroei tot meer as 200 huishoudings.

“Die mikpunt is om die lidmaatskap in2015 uit te brei na minstens 50% van die 690Proteavallei-huishoudings,” sê De Vries.

Volgens Wilstan Weichardt, ondervoor-sitter, het die buurtwag ’n aantal projektein 2014 begin wat hulle graag in 2015 wil im-plementeer. Dít sluit in om tweerigtingra-dio’s te bekom.

Hulle wil ook graag in 2015 hoë-gehaltekameras aanbring, wat 24 uur beman salwees en met die res van die stad se kamera-netwerk verbind sal wees.

De Vries sê dit sal heelwat fondswerwingverg. Hy herinner nuwe lede dat hulle ’nbuurtwag-kennisgewing kry om op hulvoorheining aan te bring, dat hulle SMS-waarskuwings, asook ’n kwartaalliksenuusbrief oor misdaadtendense in die areaontvang.

Die buurtwag mik om so gou moontlikleiers vir elke straat aan te stel.

It is with interest that I readthe hoo-ha about the MajikForest (“Ongewenstes moet eersuit”, TygerBurger, 22 October).

If we don’t look out, Ken-ridge will become a haven forvagrants. This problem needsconstant attention.

There are a few problemareas which are becomingpermanent squatting places forthe homeless. The area oppo-site the BP garage is a case inpoint. They sit against theproperty walls every day, sleepthere, use the area as a toiletand leave their rubbish to blowin the wind, which attract ratsand other vermin.

The next step will be sheltersand shacks. We have contactedthe City of Cape Town numer-ous times to request that theybe removed to suitable accom-modation, but nothing appearsto be done.

On Monday 27 October, Iwalked in the park opposite the

pharmacy and found a wholebag of rolls and bread waitingfor collection by the vagrants.There are probably well-mean-ing people who feed andprovide for these homelesspeople, but they are exacerbat-ing the problem.

Ward councillor AndreaCrous and KNI do their verybest combat this problem, but Ifeel they are fighting a losingbattle. If we want our suburbto stay pristine and safe, it willtake a concerted effort fromeveryone to help and keep itthat way.

It is a pity that Gerhardslates the VRCID securityofficers: these officers arethreatened and verbally abusedby criminals, who do not wantto see change coming to

Bellville and Parow.From the outset, I must say

that Gerhard and other mem-bers of the public must appreci-ate that the VRCID is not theprimary law enforcementagency, the police are. We areproviding an over-and-aboveservice to the community invery difficult circumstances.

However, the opposite is alsotrue – the VRCID is seen as theprimary service provider interms of safety and security,which we are not.

Since the founding of the Hoheizen Resi-dents Association (HRA) in October 2009, themanagement committee and ward council-lor Andrea Crous have been instrumental inimprovements the area to the benefit of allresidents.

In addition to the security cameras, theHRA aims to raise money for equipment tooperate a neighbourhood watch in order to

curb crime and provide a safer neighbour-hood.

Chris Lesch from Durbanville has been in-volvedwith theTygerbergRotaryClub sinceits inceptiont 11 years ago.

KENNISGEWING VAN SUBRAADS-VERGADERINGS: NOVEMBER 2014

Skoendoosprojek: Seksieleiers van die Hoërskool Bellville doen jaarliks ’n liefdadigheidsprojek. Die keuse van hul projek vanjaar was die Santa Shoeboxprojek. Die graad 8tot 11klasgroepe – ’n totaal van 29 klasse – het deelgeneem aan die projek. Daar isaltesame 105 skoendose ingesamel. Die inhoud daarvan wissel van ’n speelding tot klere.

Daar is min dinge so lekkersoos om ’n geskenk vir ’n ge-liefde te gee – hoeveel lekker-der sal ditwees omditnogmetliefde toe te draai ook?

Dié projek is vanjaar dank-sy die Alta du Toit-nasorgsen-trum moontlik met hul jaar-likse geskenkpapierprojek.

Dié sentrum in Bellville virintellektueel gestremde vol-wassenes se terapeutiese ont-wikkelingsgroep het dieprentjies ingekleur wat ge-bruik is as die drie ontwerpevir vanjaar se geskenkpapier, sê LynHerbst, fondsbemarker van die sentrum.

Dié ontwerpe is engeltjies, klokkies en ’n

generiese hartjie met bewoor-ding. “Die projek is beide ’nwerksverskaffings- en fonds-insamelingsprojek vir die na-sorgsentrum. By die werks-winkel is die kliënte (inwo-ners) hard aan die werk omdie 4 500 velle op te rol en teverpak,” sê Lynn.

A charity run Moms Organising Mi-racles (MOM), delivered an incredi-ble 1024 sandwiches to impoverishedpeople during their recent sandwichrun to shelters across the city.

The MOM team did not only handout sarmies though. They also deli-vered 156 lucky packets, 44 packets ofchips, 12 two litre bottles of cooldrinkand 200 juices, with an additionalthree boxes of toys, said MorniqueWatson of the organisation.

“MOM’s charity would like tothank each and every one for helpingus make hungry tummies happy,”she said.

They group were hosted by a num-ber of shelters on their special day,including Care Haven, Sister Incor-porated, St Anne’s, Siwive House,Ons Plek, The Holy Cross Child andYouth Care Centre, The Haven nightshelter and a last drop-off to the ho-meless at the corner where the Parowpolice station is located.

Avery busy Zanne Stapelberg pop-ped in toTygerBurger recently tochat about one of the performan-

ce highlights of her year.The soprano will once again be per-

forming at this year’s Classical Christ-mas/Klassieke Kersfees concert andsays she loves the beautiful setting forthe show that takes place at the Liqui-Fruit Amphitheatre in Paarl.

“It’s almost as if people become kin-der to each other this time of year,”Zanne says.

She says people come to the concertwith a spirit of love and happiness, cre-ating a wonderful atmosphere. Cou-pled with that is the mass choir andsymphony orchestra performing wellloved bilingual Christmas favourites.

“It’s just generally such a happy,uplifting concert,” says Zanne.

DowntoearthZanne will be joined on stage by Jan-

nie Moolman, Robbie Wessels, CorleaBotha and Cobus Snyman.

“Man, I love Corlea,” she says.The two worked together for the first

time at the Innibos festival in Nelspruit.Zanne describes Corlea as down-to-earth

and sweet.“It’s almost as if she’s unaware of how gre-

at she is and that makes her so charming.”She’s also performed with Jannie and Co-

bus before, but never with Robbie.“I think I might challenge him to sing so-

me opera notes,” she jests.Zanne’s favourite Christmas song is “O,

Holy Night” and since she only gets to per-form these songs once a year, she tries tomake the most of it.

Before Classical Christmas, Zanne will betouring the Southern Cape with her new ca-

baret, Zaza en die Kunstenar with Niël Rade-man, but she’ll be performing anotherChristmas concert with Hanneli Rupert andZorada Temmingh at La Motte wine estatewhere they’ve recently built a chapel withan organ.

On Thursday 18 December she’ll be perfor-ming with the Hugo Lambrechts SymphonyOrchestra to raise funds for children whowant to study music.

“This time of the year is hectic and I loveit,” Zanne says.

Fans might be interested to see what she’llbe wearing on stage, as Zanne was namedone of Sarie magazine’s ten most stylish

South African women earlier this year,but the singer has a very simple viewon style.

“I think style is when you know whoyou are, like who you are and then youcelebrate it.”

She says style doesn’t necessarily me-an wearing beige and cashmere.

“I’m a gypsy, visual things are veryimportant to me.”

She says women know who know whothey are and are confident with them-selves, automatically exude style.

Exciting projectsAfter a big Christmas celebration

with family and friends, Zanne willtackle some exciting projects in the newyear.

She’ll be part of Zoid, Zanne and Zola-ni, a collaborative production she’ll bepresenting with Karen Zoid and ZolaniMahola at Stellenbosch’s Woordfees.“We’re all friends and it’s somethingwe’ve all wanted to do for a long time.”

Zanne is also thrilled to be tacklingher first pantomime. As a mother, she’salways wanted to do something herchildren can watch and she’ll get thechance when she joins the cast of LieweHeksie at the KKNK as the “good fairy”.

A new exhibition, Anglo-oriental- connectingpast to present has opened at Rust-en-VredeGallery in Durbanville.

Anglo-Oriental pottery can be defined as“high-temperature reduction-fired utilitari-an ware that was wheel-thrown with the em-phasis on understated quality of form, sub-tly glazed and minimally decorated”. Someof the early local potters, like Esias Bosch,Bryan Haden, Hyme Rabinowitz and TimMorris became intimately familiar with theAnglo-Oriental style and assimilated thoseethics and aesthetics into their work.

Rust-en-Vrede have invited 17 master pot-ters from South Africa who produce work inthis tradition, to exhibit in Salon A and B.These works will all be for sale.

Four retrospective exhibitions of cera-mics by: Bryan Haden (1930 - ), Esias Bosch(1923 – 2010), Tim Morris (1941 – 1990)and Hy-me Rabinowitz (1920 – 2009 will be on displayin the Clay Museum. SURPLUS APPORTIONMENT - UPDATE

As advised in Surplus Communication Number Four, the Trustees have submitted theproposed project plan to the Financial Services Board to complete a SurplusApportionment Scheme (detailing how the surplus is to be distributed amongsteligible stakeholders).

The Actuary appointed by the Fund to assist the Fundwith its Surplus Apportionmenthas analysed the data required for the surplus calculations and has requested that theadministrator of the Fund provides additional data in order to complete the surplusapportionmentcalculations.

Since most of the data required were not stored electronically as the data is requiredfrom January 1980, the administrator is in the process of extracting the data frompaper records which has significantly lengthened the process of finalising the data forthesurplusapportionment.

The Trustees have thus submitted a revised project plan to the Financial ServicesBoard to complete a SurplusApportionment Scheme(detailinghowthe surplus is tobedistributedamongsteligible stakeholders).

The Actuary needs to finalise the calculations before the Trustees of the Fund canconsider theSurplusApportionmentScheme.

As mentioned earlier, the Actuary has requested additional data required forcalculating the proposed distribution of surplus and to identify thememberswhowillbeeligible for surplus.

Please note that registration as a formermember of the Fund is not a guaranteethatanysurpluspayment isdue,as thiswill onlybe finalisedoncetheauthoritieshaveapprovedthescheme.

The Surplus Apportionment Scheme has to be formally approved by the FinancialServices Board before any payments can start. This approval process can take manymonths, and isnot likely tobe finalisedbefore theendof2015.

Therearesixmainpoints tounderstandat this stage:1. The process is going to take a long time to complete. This is not the fault of the Trustees or the

Administrator of the Fund, but simply due to the complexity of all the required steps, as prescribed inlegislation. It isnotpossibleat this stage togivean indicationofwhentheprocesswill becompleted.

2. It is unlikely that there will be much money, if any, to distribute to active Fund members as formermemberswhodid not receive both their and the Employer's contributionswhen they left the Fundhavetobepaidbeforeanysurpluscanbeawarded toactivemembers.

3. Nocashpaymentscanbemade toanyonewhois still anactiveFundmember.4. No payments will be made until the required approvals from the authorities have been obtained and

the surplus process is completed. As the surplus process will not be completed this year no paymentstoanypotentiallyeligiblepastmemberswill bedone thisyear.

5. Once the surplus apportionment process has been completed every past memberwho has registeredwith the Fund will receive a letter from the Fund advising them whether they have qualified for asurplusbenefit ornot.

6. Similarly every active Fund member will also be advised by the Fund in writing as to whether theywill benefit fromthesurplusapportionmentornot.

Western Province golfer VanessaSmith celebrated her fifth nationalvictory when she lifted the South Af-

rican Women’s Mid-Amateur Champions-hip title with an impressive down-to-the-wi-re performance at Irene Country Club onWednesday (5 November).

The Milnerton mid-amateur took the leadwith an opening 74, but registered an unsa-tisfactory 84 in the second round that cut hereight shot advantage to just four strokes.

But Smith made the trip to Pretoria a me-morable one when she showed the chasingpack her heels with a closing 76 to seal a ru-naway nine stroke victory in the Champi-onship Division with a winning total of 14-over-par 236.

Smith won the SA Junior Open and the SAWomen’s Amateur Match Play in 2000. Thesame year, she lifted the Jackie Mercer Tro-phy as the leading amateur in the SA Wo-men’s Open and the following year, won theSA Women’s Open in her rookie pro season.

Capping a solid seasonThe triumph followed closely on her re-

cent triumph at the Boland Women’s Mid-Amateur and caps a solid season for Smith.

“I’m absolutely delighted to add this titleto my national tally,” said the 36-year-old

former professional.“This victory means so much to me. I real-

ly wanted to win this title and I preparedwell for the championship. But the older youget, the harder it gets and it don’t think itcould get any harder than this week.”

Although her final total was well over thetarget she set herself at the start of the week,Smith was nevertheless thrilled with theoutcome.

“After the first round, I thought six overwas a reasonable target, but the secondround just killed me,” Smith said.

“I struggled to get going and was five overby the time she reached the turn. We werecalled off and sat around for nearly twohours towait out the lightning.After thebre-ak, I just couldn’t get things going and thebogeys just added up.

No mistakes“I still had a four shot lead, but I knew I

would have to limit my mistakes in the finalround. Liezl (Smit) and Jane (Mackenzie) ca-me at me hard on the front nine, but by thetime we reached the turn, I was pretty confi-dent that I could win it.

“The course played incredibly long and Istill had five bogeys on my card, but I can’ttell you how wonderful it was to finally

knock in a birdie putt at the 17th. And finis-hing with a par at the 18th was just the icingon the cake. This is a victory I will cherishfor a very long time to come.”

Smith from Prince’s Grant closed with an81 to take second on 243 and finished fivestrokes clear of defending champion SonjaBland and fellow KwaZulu-Natal player,Mackenzie.

Bland closed with an 81, while former pro-fessional Mackenzie from Ladysmith signedfor a final round 84.

Die Durbies sal nou vanaf 21 Februariesaam met 19 ander klubspanne van oor diehele land in een van vier groepe in vier wed-stryde sake onderling uitspook.

Begin April – gedurende die Paasnaweek– sal die twee spanne wat die beste gevaarhet in elke afdeling mekaar die stryd aansêin die eindronde van die kompetisie.
