This was the message from Captain Fienie Nimb after a reader alerted TygerBurger of her car being stolen from Willowbridge shopping centre on 2 July. Nimb answered a media enquiry about es- calating crime at shopping centres and said shoppers are indeed considered as “vulnera- ble” by criminals. “The northern suburbs are seen as a parti- cularly vulnerable target to criminals from elsewhere. And especially at shopping cen- tres, where shoppers are more relaxed,” she said. In the case of the reader, Teresa Botha, she said her car was found the next day in Brac- kenfell by the staff of the Vredekloof control room, who spotted the vehicle and called the police. The car was recovered, but Botha asked TygerBurger to alert the public. Nimb agrees, saying that the shoppers most at risk are mothers with prams. “It is especially moms with babies who are targeted at the major shopping centres,” Nimb said. “Inside the shops the moms are targeted when they leave their handbag at the bottom of the pram. They are then distracted and the bag gets stolen,” she said. Other incidents include items being stolen from cars, or the vehicles themselves being stolen from parking areas.“People need to le- arn not to leave their valuables within plain sight,”she emphasised. Local police are cur- rently investigating a syndicate thought to be operating at Willowbridge and Tyger Val- ley shopping centres. “One of the vehicles has since been recover-ed and three out of the four thefts have beenlinked to a single syndicate. An arrest hasbeen made by the police,” says Annandale.Extensive security measures are firmly
in place at the centre, including closed cir-cuit television and patrols by uniformed gu-ards. “The centre fosters a strong relations-hip with the police from whom we obtainall the latest information required to ensurethe centre’s safety for its shoppers and te-nants.”He said they also regularly review all se-
curity measures and take a zero tolerancestance against crime. “This is a priority, considering the reality of the times we liveinandwewill continue to strategise tomini-mise risk wherever possible in future.”Tyger Valley Centre is equally serious
about crime on their premises. RoxanneHorn, a spokesperson for this centre, said:“There have been numerous claims of theft,remote-jamming and suspicious behaviouratTygerValleyCentre;management and se-curity are aware of isolated incidents and
are doing their best to ensure the safety ofthe shoppers and tenants.”She said that according to the centre’s se-
curity, no incidents of theft havebeenrepor-ted out of prams, but that there have beenincidents of handbags having been stolenfrom trolleys.“This does not happen on a regular basis.
Please do not leave any handbags unatten-ded in a pram or trolley,” Horn cautioned.Reagarding vehicle break-ins, she says
these do not occur often as the latest trendis remote-jamming, where the burglar usesan electronic device to intercept the immo-biliser. “According to reports, there are novisible signs of forced entry into these vehi-cles and therefore remote-jamming could bea possible reason as to how items have dis-appeared from vehicles.”She said insurance fraud was another po-
pular reason for remote-jamming incidents.“Tyger Valley’s security team has two re-
mote jamdetectorswhichareused formoni-toring purposes should any remote-jam-ming activity take place when patrolling
the grounds.”Horn said the public should ensure that
their vehicle is properly locked before ente-ring the centre and emphasised that underno circumstances should any valuables beleft in the car.“Customers must ensure that everything
is in order with their vehicles before lea-ving any shopping centre,”she reiterated.Vehicles have been stolen at the centre be-
fore, but over the past twomonths there hadonly been incidents of customers parkingtheir cars and not remembering the correctexit, then “finding their car safely parkedin its original spot”.She advised women to keep handbags on
their lap in a restaurant and urged cautionat all times, regardless of the location.Anysuspiciousactivitywithin the centre,
shop, or even the parking lot should be re-ported immediately. The security control roomatTygerValley

Ever heard of an electronic music genrecalled psy-trance?Well, a documentary about the psycha-
delic trance movement is to soon to hitCape Town’s rave scene.
Johan Schreuder, CEO of the recor-ding studio producing the doccie, sayspsy-trance has gained a lot of momentuminCapeTown, attracting thousands to theannual Vortex psy-trance festival. The documentary is to be called Vortex
– 20 years of Trance and will document“the true essence of psychedelic trance, the music, the people and the festivals,”says Schreuder.“The genre really started in the late 80s
when the legendary underground word-of-mouth raves blossomed throughoutthe city during the short period prior tothe collapse of apartheid,” he said. The first psy-trance event hit South Af-
rica around 1994, coinciding with the ar-rival of democracy, he says, adding thatCapeTownrepresented one of theworld’sprime psy-trance destinations.Schreuder says his studio in Durban-
ville was appointed by owner and organi-ser of the Vortex Trance Adventures fes-tival, Grant Dreyer, to film the documen-tary of this annual get-together of allthings trance.Schreuder says a lot of people have no
idea what psychedelic trance is, what itstands for and how enlightening the festi-vals can be.

Ander stem hiermeesaam. Roxanne Stander is een só ’n mens. Sybedryf ’n klein wassery in Chrismar. “Ekkry baie swaar.
Anton Dippenaar is Vrydag begrawe enYolandéenLala sebegrafnisdiens isDonder-dag deur ds.

Police: ‘Botched abortions from ignorance’MICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
We’ve all seen the hundreds of ads onlampposts advertising illegal abor-tions. Yet there seems to be an end-
less stream of women opting for ‘backstreet’abortions, despite legal state abortions be-ing available for free.A woman from Bloekombos in Kraaifon-tein last Wednesday ended up in TygerbergHospital after shebought pricey – andhighlydangerous – abortion pills on the black mar-ket.CaptainFienieNimb, spokeswomanof theBellville police, confirmed that the 28-year-old woman visited Kraaifontein Day Hospi-tal after swallowing the pills and started
going into labour without any contractions. The woman was transported as an emer-gency case via ambulance to Tygerberg Hos-pital, Nimb said.“Concerned medical personnel on duty en-quired with police about the incident, seeingas thewomanwas already 28weeks pregnant. This amounts to an illegal abortion.”
The pill that kills (the mother)The legal time framewithinwhich an abor-tion can be done is 12 weeks, and then onlythrough a registered practioner, clinic or he-alth practitioner.Nimb said the woman was too embarassedto seek legalmedical helpwhen she finally de-cided to terminate the pregnancy at this latestage.
The staff at the hospitalmanaged to savethe baby and the woman remains preg-nant. But they are also still considering thecharges brought her.The woman bought the abortion pillsfrom a foreign national – valued at onlyabout R2 each – for aboutR550 for two pills.“We find women arestill very ignorant, naiveand vulnerable – easy tar-gets for those selling theseabortion pills on Google,or those who advertise inpamphlets, in trains or onlampposts,” she said.“They sell these pillsand get away with it, be-cause they are difficult totrace, using cellphonenumbers that have beenRICAd by legitimateSouth African citizens, who pay to have theiridentity used.”She urged the public not to buy the pillswhich will ultimately cripple the marketfor them, ratherusing legitimate andregis-tered practitioners.“Another alternative would be to opt foran adoption if they’re that far along,” shesaid.
Opt for TOPThe provincial health department saidthey have gone to great lengths to ensurethat the public is educated and informedabout legal abortions.“The provincial communications de-partment sent out amessage informing thepublic about the free and safe terminationof pregnancy (TOP) services that are provi-ded in the designated facilities in theWestern Cape,” said Laticia Pienaar, principal communications officer at Ty-
gerberg Hospital. The departmental women’s health sub-di-rectorate even developed an educational wo-men’s health toolwhich is used used by com-munity care workers while they conducttheir home visits, she said.
“The topic of safe and freeTOP services is addressedduring the visits.“TOP posters educatingthe public on medical TOPswere distributed recently toall health care facilities,”Pienaar said. She said women shoulduse the services available tothem at all government andpublic health facilities.“One can report to any fa-cility and if necessary, willbe referred to aTOPdesigna-ted site.“Awomanwho is less thannine weeks pregnant quali-
fies for a medical TOP- a drug-induced abor-tion,” she said.“All consultations are conducted in a con-fidential manner with in depth counsel-ling.” But when asked if there are any offici-al statistics available about the number ofbotched abortions in the province, she ans-wred in the negative. The number for legal and successful abor-tions at government facilities was at 12 709in theWesternCape for 2010/2011, accordingto a statement.“Backstreet abortions are not legal andthose who perform them are breaking thelaw.“If members of the public come across aposter advertising abortion, they must re-port it to their nearest police station. All sexually active women of 12 years andolder may use free family planning servicesat all government clinics.
The legal time framewithin which anabortion can be
done is 12 weeks, and then only at aregistered practioner, clinic or health
GOING DUTCH: A ministerial delegation including the Dutch Minister of Infrastructure andEnvironment, Dr Lidewijde Ongering visited Bellville and the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP)offices on earlier this month. A very productive meeting of GTP board members, the Dutch Alliancefor Sustainable Urban Development in Africa (DASUDA) shed some insight on the objectives of theGTP and the collaboration of DASUDA and the GTP. This was followed by a presentation of a casestudy DASUDA conducted to demonstrate digital tools on water, mobility and urban designapproach. Hosting the talk in Bellville created the opportunity to drive through the area and givethe delegation an impression of the challenges and many opportunities of the area. Attendees alsohad the opportunity to interact with these world class interactive tools. For more informationabout the GTP and DASUDA, visit www.gtp.org.za and www.dasuda.nl PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Neemjou posisie in as ouer.

SMSV It was shocking to see you turn the tragic death of an innocent child into a pleafor a library (TB, 25 June). The lack of alibrary did not kill that child, the great Capetonian pastime of jaywalking did.Rather call for better education on how tocross roads. Fine all parents who teachtheir children to run across the roads, which you see them do daily. Put up morespeed cameras for the escalating amountof speeding drivers. Some of us are sickof dicing with death every day. - Carol,Sanddrift
- Anoniem
V My work involves driving, so I listen tothe radio often. There are many topics onraising money for the poor, but not aboutcontraception. I am in the medical fieldand have noticed that welloff peoplehave children according to what they canafford. I am tired of the expectation offree health, schooling and housing. Thereality in this world is if you want it, youpay for it. Rape is the only answer I willaccept for an unplanned pregnancy. -Chris, Table View
V It’s a disgrace how the system fails vulnerable kids by turning them into vulnerable adults (Xoliswa Hendricks, TB, 2June). These children are also orphanedand abandoned by a system which is supposed to protect and uplift them, butwhich sets them up for failure. Yet hundreds of experienced social workersstruggle to find employment. It’s strange,as the need for their services is so monumental. How embarrassing! - Anonymous

Keen to show off their newly discovered ta-lents, employees of the Shoprite Group havethe opportunity to shine in the Topstarscompetition.
Every year for the last eight years, theTopstars singers get the chance for their voi-ces to be heard. But this year, the competiti-on’s top contestants took it a big step further:having their songs recorded on the AllstarsCD.
Twelve top singers from the competition’shistory have been a part of creating this al-bum, and six of them are from Cape Town.
“Every single voice on this album is aShoprite worker’s voice,” says Topstars pro-
ducer, Mynie Grové proudly. The album is made up of 12
tracks, seven of which are ori-ginal and all chosen for theirmeaningful and motivationalmessages. Abigail Andrews, who works at Checkers CobbleWalk, says the recording expe-rience has been amazing.
“You’re in this situationwhere you never thought youwould be, and it’s like some-thing that happened over-night,” she says. Because sheloves what she’s doing, evenwhen she’s tired, she can “goon” as if she had just started her day, whichis just as well, as the team are busy prepa-
ring for a roadshow that willsee them performing all overthe country.
Jo-Ann Daniels from Delftstarted out cleaning chicken ata Hungry Lion outlet in 2010.She says because of all the op-portunities Shoprite has givenher, she now works as a payrollclerk at Shoprite’s Western Ca-pe head office. The Topstarscontestants are assigned amentor and receive coachingas part of the competition. Jo-Ann says she has learnt a greatdeal that she can apply to her
personal life, her work environment and hercommunity. In short, the competition has
made her a better person and taught her mo-re about herself. “I have learnt that when Ibelieve in something, I can actually do it,”she says.
Mitchell’s Plain’s Zaheer Otto, who worksat DC Dry Goods Bolt Avenue, has walkeda five year road with Topstars. “It takes yourmind away from everything,” he says. Theother local singers on the album are BernardJackson (Checkers Hyper, Parow), MarioSpeelman (Checkers Oakdale) and ZolaNgwenze (Shoprite Khayalitsha).
The group will be back in Cape Town onTuesday 22 July, when the Topstars Roads-how will perform at Ratanga Junction.
The Allstars CD will be available at allShoprite Group stores from the middle of Ju-ly.

Pop singer, Daniel Baron, is giving fansa taste of his new album, with his newsingle, “Heartbreak City”.
The chart-topping songwriter won heartsacross the country with his debut album,It’ s Time, which clinched eight radio hits. Now he’s busy with his next, as yet unna-
and even while he was still at school, youcould find him performing at the nearestpub or club after hours.Being one of the top 10 contestants in the
2009 Idols competition gave him lots of expo-sure and made him even more certain thatperforming was what he wanted to do withhis life.“Then the realworkbegan,” he says.Dani-
el points out that many people think you en-ter Idols, “and then the work is done”, butthis isn’t the case, especially since he wentstraight into the studio to work on It’s Time.Daniel describes his music as pop/rock, a
genre which gives him plenty of room to ex-perimentwithdifferent sounds. “I love colla-borating with new genres and new artists,”he says. “It’s sucha strongmediumtobeableto take two completely different genres orminds and create something spectacular.”His collaboration with ProVerb, resulted
in the single “Not Here”, which shot to num-ber one on the Kia Take40SA chart last year.He also recently did a song with dance act,Pascal & Pearce.
so successful is that his songs are honest andthat people can relate to them. While his music has been recieved well in
the United Kingdom, he’s decided that it’smore important for him to build his careerin his home country before he explores hisoverseas options. “I think there’s no betterfoundation that your home country,” hesays.
“Heartbreak City” is a tongue-in-cheeklook at heartbreak.“I’m saying we’ve all been through heart-
break, so lets just look back and laugh at it,”Daniel explains, adding that the song showshis lighter side.Fans can expectDaniel’s newalbumsome-
time in October and he won’t disappointthem as they can expect the same feel as hisprevious album. When he isn’t working on his own music,
Daniel alsowrites for other artists. His song,“Insomnia,”was a hit for international pop/dance artist, Cara, and back home his song“Liefde Soldaat” is being performed by theAfrikaans boy band, Adam.CapeTown fanswill get a chance to seeDa-
niel in actionwhenheperformsatCaféRouxin Noordhoek on Thursday 25 July. Ticketscost R80 and bookings can be made [email protected] Daniel performed “Heartbreak City” on the OrangeCouch. Magnificent form by Francis Carru-thers and Bellville driver GunterDrotschie in the Sports and GT and
the Fine Car categories, was the highlight ofSaturday’s fifth round of the Wingfield Mo-tors Power Series at Killarney.Carruthers performed beautifully, as his
Juno SS3 swiftly dealt with a Porsche thathad been strengthened by topGautengerAn-drew Culbert and Durban’s Sun Moodley, who is also the Big Foot Express category’ssponsor. Blaauwberg’s Craig Jarvis andMoodley finished second and third in thefirst race, with Jarvis (again), and Culbertfilling the second positions.
Despite not setting the quickest qualifyingtime, Drotshie was also in a destructivemood in the Charl Electrical Eng. Fine Carevents. His bulky Chev Commodore GS fi-nished well ahead of Eric van der Merwe(Porsche 944 turbo) and Jaco Lambert (VWFox) in the first race, with a Porsche powe-red Lourens Bester and Van der Merwe fil-ling these positions in the second. The Mutlu Battery Classic Car category
provided a platform for another double vic-tory, this time for veteran Richard Quixley. But the Datsun 240Z driver was overshado-wed by Trevor Momberg’s V6 Ford Capri inboth races, with Vance Kearney (Ford CapriPerana) taking third in the first race. The second Classic shootout was red flag-
ged when Johan Swart’s VW Scirocco cras-hed into the barrier wall at the exit of Engencorner. Luckily, with the results judgedfrom their positions on the final completedlap, Swart was awarded third place. Overallclass victories went to Dave Alhadeff (B: Al-fa), Herman de Kock (C: Ford Escort), andJan-Willem de la Port (D: Chev CanAm).The quality of Masters V8 events easily
compensated for their lack of quantity asCraig Jarvis and Franco Donadio fought itout in the last two events. After sharing firstand secondplaces, theywere followedacrossthe line by Richard Schreuder in the firstand Paolo Cavalieri in the second. The Makita Supercar events were possi-
bly even closer, as Steve McCarthy was no
more thanahair’s breadth aheadofNickAd-cock when the flag came out at the end oftheir first race. They switched positions inthe final, with Adcock having just enough ofan advantage to clinch the overall verdict. The thirdplaceswere claimedbyBradWa-
deley and Gareth Easom, who was also ad-judged the overall winner of the Silver class, despite starting from the back of the grid af-ter missing the qualifying sessions. TheBronze class went to Carl Nel.Sean le Riche’s 1.7 litre Formula Renault
was unchallenged in the single seater For-mula Libre events. He was followed by theB andC classwinners, Rassie Erasmus (For-mula Ford Ray) and Stephen Schemel (For-mula Vee Rhema), in both races.
Fast fiery wheels at supercar races
Gareth Easom from Edgemead took a well deserved 3rd place in Supercars after starting at theback of the grid.

“We are all very excited with the win, butI have to say it has been a stressful twodays,” said WP manager, Frikkie Coetzer.“Our game against the Golden Lions wasperhaps the hardest game of the tournamentas they are physically strong and came at uswith no mercy. But we managed to beatthem. Today’s game was perhaps not asphysically challenging, but the Blue Bullsplay a good tactical game. We had to change
our game plan to introduce a combinationof both strength and tactics, which workedin our favour in the end.”
