Project Description: The Two Rivers Middle School Project at Young consists of renovating 14,400 sf of shelled space within the ex- isting building and constructing a new two story 28,000 sf free-standing building with an elevated bridge con- nection. The renovated space and new building col- lectively will serve 300 new middle school students. The project will also include a new drop-off at the south end of the site, new play courts, new play field, and integrated tiered seating within the hillside at the north end of the site. The mission of Two Rivers is to nurture a diverse group of students to become lifelong, active participants in their own education, develop a sense of self and community, and become responsible and compas- sionate members of society. We aim to achieve this mission while providing a state of the art facility with exceptional access to daylight and views, clear sight lines, and sustainable materials that relate to the sur- rounding buildings on the campus. Community is at the heart of the Two Rivers curriculum. With the new middle school building we are express- ing the community through the architecture with a central light monitor that washes down over the main circulation stair and gathering space, illuminating the school at its core. The classroom spaces and corridors are organized around this volume of light bringing the outside world in to the heart of the building. The new facility will serve 6th through 8th graders with core classrooms, the renovated space will provide art, drama, music, Spanish, and science classrooms. Administrative offices and teacher workrooms are equally distributed between the two stories of the new building. Two Rivers’ focus on community is highlight- ed with the creation of community spaces carved out for each grade level to promote expeditionary learn- ing with flexible classroom environments. 820 26th ST NE September 6, 2019 1 Two Rivers Middle School at Young CFA Final Submission Exterior Rendering - East Elevation
