A R e f l e c t i o n o n K e ys I remember as a child watching a television show called “The Seven Keys”. The purpose of the show, as I recall, was to find the right key that would fit the right lock and, if one was successful, then a wonderful gift was found behind the locked doors. All one had to do was to concentrate, remember, and then be lucky enough to have chosen the right one of “The Seven Keys”.
Key play an important part in our lives; they keep doors locked, they open them up. They keep a safety box locked; they open it up to get to the valuables. Keys are used for cars, boats, machinery, window locks, and even to open the recesses of someone’s heart! Find the key to a problem and you have a solution. Keys are often lost (as I am experiencing more and more); keys are often found and there is no memory of what they used to open! “I will place the key of the House of David on Eliakim’s shoulder; what he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open”. These words from our first reading for Sunday Mass recall the gift of leadership given to Eliakim; unfortunately, this gift of leadership went to his head and he lost the power of the keys. Ah, the sadness of losing what one had gained because of selfishness. In the Gospel this weekend we read: “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.” Those keys given to Peter by Jesus can be understood as the seven Sac-raments of our Church: Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick. Each time a Sacrament is celebrated the doors of grace are unlocked and the power, love and mercy of God flows upon His holy people, the Church. These keys are meant to be used often; let us keep an eye on these seven keys for the spiritual life and not let them get mis-placed or go unused.

A R e f l e c t i o n o n F o l d i n g C h a i r s They show up in different shapes and colors. Some are utilitarian gray or black, while others shine with island colors like orange and turquoise. A few feature wide armrests with places to hold a cold drink. There may be a residue of beach sand on some. The chairs (except those arranged in pairs to accommodate cou-ples) are lined up six feet apart from each other in the church courtyard. Prevented from entering the church building be-cause of the coronavirus threat, occu-pants of the chairs sit forward and peer through the glass windows, straining to witness the miracle of the Eucharist un-folding inside. This scene, which has become so fa-miliar during the pandemic, reminds me of the wonderful story told in chapter two of the Gospel of Mark, where four men carry a paralytic to the place where Jesus is preaching. They are hoping that Jesus will heal their friend but they can’t get close enough because of the crowd. So they chop a hole in the roof over Je-sus’ head and lower the mat with the sick man lying on it right down where Jesus can’t miss him. Jesus heals the paralytic and praises him and his creative friends for their great faith. The folks who faithfully lug their fold-ing chairs to the courtyard every Satur-day night and weekday morning for Mass simply long to be with Jesus. And no doubt they are thankful – as is their pas-tor – that they do not have to chop a hole in the roof. By: Bill Kramer, Life, Justice & Peace Ministry
